I was searching Cragslist for a wood chipper and inquired about one that was listed in Lansing MI Sound safe?: Hi there, I'm active duty in the US Army, stationed at Casper, WY. to complete the pre-deployment training program. The chipper is stored on a small military facility. It has been prepared for immediate transportation, but it can also be picked up from the base, as long as you'll be able to come here in the next 2 days. If you can't manage to come here before I'll be moved to my next duty station, the chipper can be transported by a military carrier (transportation charges are included in the selling price). To eliminate any concerns, you will have a 5 days inspection period, prior purchase approval Due to the urgent nature of sale, the acquisition process will be conducted through the third party payment platform provided by Google Checkout. They basically implement a secure and controlled environment that allows the payment transfer between buyer and seller. Please note that a refundable deposit will be paid (1.500$), as proof of your intention to complete the purchase transaction. The money will be held in trust by Google Checkout. If you want to proceed and you have sufficient funds to complete the transaction, please email me back with the following information; - Full Name and Shipping Address (Home Address, City, State, zip/Postal Code) - Info. required by Google Checkout they will contact you with simple, easy to follow step by step guidelines. - Phone Number: (Home,Mobile,Office) - Info. required by the shipping company, they will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the chipper . I look forward to your response, Daniel On Thu, Jul 12, 2012 at 5:33 AM, obert wrote: OK, sounds good how much to ship it to Lansing?

Didn't need to read any further, it is a scam. The scammer will often pose as someone far away, be it in the military, relative in another country, etc. The item you want will be in another location far away, making it not practical to pick it up. IF you fall for it, they make you pay some third party, lie and claim its like an escrow, and lie that it is refundable. They then have your money and you never hear from them again. |

And reading the rest does not sound like the kind of language that a typical soldier would use. Sound like it was written more by a salesman or marketing person! |

That scam combined with a chipper?! I have only seen that boiler plate scam text glued to cars and bikes. I guess they are getting desperate. |

You're in Lansing, so is the chipper. Set up a time to see it, never pay ahead for a CL item, otherwise it's a scam. |

The first thing that struck me was why would a soldier even have a wood chipper and why would he store it on base? |

"The first thing that struck me was why would a soldier even have a wood chipper and why would he store it on base?" Or that the military would be willing to transport his personal wood chipper type stuff around. Brin is on-target here. Try to arrange an inspection, regardless of whether you can or not. If there is resistance or excuses, then scam. I've done this before with good success. 'My husband owned the cherry '66 vette, but was killed in Iraq'. Vehicle is in Georgia, but I am moving to Timbuktu - or wherever. Me: "It just so happens my brother is stationed at Ft. Benning, and can come by cash-in-hand to take a look. If all is good, he can pay your agent on the spot.." This approach almost always results in no further responses from seller if they are scamming... Caveat Emptor |
