vampires, werewolves, rain, clouds and fog we may see over 55 today.... I am not betting on it the rain shadow - it only rains when it is dark... or cloudy |

Knoxville broke the record from 1930 yesterday, popped to 105- heat index prolly 110. Sis in Little Rock said they're not worried about the grass anymore, they're watching TREES die. Hoping to keep the garden alive, somehow... |

It's been over 100 most of this past week in MO. Rare for this early in the summer. Rode through IL, IN, KY, TN, MS, and AL on the XT last week. I avoided looking at thermometers to keep my positive thinking going, but I'm sure it was triple digits everywhere south of IL/IN. The Uly seemed to love the heat - 51mpg average for the trip, the best I'd recorded before was an entire tank of 60mph highway at 48mpg. Fan ran a lot after stops in the southern states, but I was hauling a passenger and bags. |

My GF has been out of town, so I'm using her car to get around- an old Toyota Solara, but the thing puts out cold air just as soon as I get it down the street leaving the neighborhood... it fascinates me how the Toyota engineers figured out how to make that happen! My '92 Nissan hardbody needs a recharge on the AC loop- anyone here done a DIY on that? HALP!

86129squids, I haven't but my Dad has using those small cans from WalMart. It's worked for him. As long as the R-whatever that your HardBody uses is available. |

in 92' it would've been r12 which is not easily available. It works soooo much better than r134a too... Record high temps here on Friday followed by a thunderstorm with 68mph winds. Knocked out power to half of the greater DC area. One of my neighbors has a tree through their kitchen... My power was restored yesterday which was good because today was another record high. Al Gore must be loving this... (Message edited by nik on July 01, 2012) |

It hit 101 in Moab, UT as we rolled into town today. I think it was hotter near Canyonlands though. Tomorrow we are making the run into Nevada. Picture from near Canonlands.

We also got a call from our neighbor today. Apparently in addition to the heat back home, they had some nasty winds. Sounds like we lost a great big 35 foot tree that shades the back yard and much of our house. Crushed our fence and the neighbor's swimming pool. Power is out all over the place back home too. I think I like it better her in Moab! |

IN Ohio we're seeing mid 90 to low 100s and nasty thunderstorms. I've been without power close to three days THIS WEEK ALONE. Sucks to lose close to $150.00 in food because the power goes out and it all defrost, no dry ice to keep it frozen and water ice can't. Looks like it'd going to be a LONG summer. BTW my bike's A/C quit work, how do I recharge it? |

It was 105F in Knoxville the other day?!..... so that is what happened! I worked in the early am hours, it got uncomfortable about 1:00. I set up sprinklers for the dogs and the horse so they could get cooled off, then I headed in for a nap in the a/c. I could feel the heat trying to get in the house. I went back out side around 5:00 pm and I could smell the grass being toasted. It smelled as if there was hay burning in the yard. We finally got rain early this morning. At 7:30 am you could almost hear the grass growing again. The one good thing I have seen of this heat wave happened yesterday. There have been Bumble Bees drilling and boring into my office building roof frame for a couple of years. I have tried most of the stuff the hardware store guys have advised. The heat did the job. All day yesterday full size adult Bumble Bees were dropping to their deaths on the steps of my office, to be torn to bits by little black ants. Uh oh. Now I have a little black ant problem! |

If you're thinking of coming north to escape the heat, think again. 89 degrees in downtown St. Paul, MN at 8:30 this morning. |

Ltbuell, sorry, but I think we will be making it into CA tomorrow. Trying to keep the flow going on the way out at least. We'll see how much time we have to waste heading east again. BTW my bike's A/C quit work, how do I recharge it? Just soak your helmet and jacket with water. It's been working great for us out west where it's really dry heat. It really gives a chill for about 20 minutes. We headed north today to Salt Lake City today, then turned west and burned down 80. Turned out to be a pretty comfortable day, coolest so far except for when above about 7000 feet in CO. Rode past the Great Salt Lake. Smells like the ocean! Very cool. Stopped by the Bonneville Salt Flats. Remind me to tell you that story sometime.

Coming home from the WVBuell rally one hot summer day, my Buell camel back water bag broke at the bottom fitting. That rushed a quart and a half of ice water down my lower back and such. I was good to go for the next few hours! Water poured inside a double mesh jacket and pants really works well at cooling the body. |

We rode some of highway 1 today along the coast. Nice and chilly today! Nice change. Yesterday coming through the Sierras Mary's bike started fouling a plug. This has become a reoccurring problem on her bike for some reason. Running it hard seems to burn the deposits off the plugs for a while, so I started taking every exit from the freeway so we could jam it on the entrance ramps. Cleared it up, but found a Triumph dealer just west of Sacramento who could get it in for a plug change. At least it was hitting on all three again for a while at least. RANT ON... The plugs are a pain to get to on these bikes, so I know it's going to be a big charge for 3 plugs. After a while of waiting they told us they had it running on all 3 cylinders, but the idle is really rough. My jaw about hit the floor because this bike has always idled like a metronome. They said the throttle bodies needed to be balanced and that the current ECU flash was obsolete. OK, while they are in there go ahead and balance the throttle bodies and install the new flash. We got the bike back just as they were closing. The service manager literally beat us out of the parking lot. We fire up to leave, and OMG this thing is running terrible! The shop is now closed for the holiday too. We found a hotel, and I hooked up the laptop to see if I could see what's going on. One of the first things I noticed is that the throttle position is at zero. I'm more familiar with the Buells and ECMspy software, but this just seems odd. As you opened the throttle, the TPS stayed at zero for the first part of the movement, then started going up after the throttle bodies were already partway open. These bastards didn't get the TPS reset correctly! Even worse, I'm as positive as I can be that they had already done the new flash before even asking if I wanted it done. That's the only thing that would explain them mentioning the "rough idle" after the plug change. Then I find that there's a procedure that can reset the adaptive settings (kind of like the AFV on a Buell). I did that in the morning and it's better, but still not running right. Then I take a good look at the paperwork and notice I didn't get charged for the new plugs! I read the footnotes and find that the mechanic decided to not put the new plugs in and just replaced the old ones! So in short I paid 2 hours labor to have them NOT replace a failing spark plug, and make other changes that have the bike running worse than it ever has. END RANT... So rather than hang near Sacramento until Thursday to hope they can not screw us further, we decided to move on. Once moving it runs well. Stalls on a cold start. It NEVER did that before. So after running north on Highway 1, we realized that we were never going to find a hotel on the coast on the 4th. We hopped onto a road to get out to 101 and it was a terrible 1 lane road that was barely paved. A sign did say to expect this for the first 5 miles. Eventually it turned into an OK road with steep grades and tight switch backs. The pavement was only marginal though. After about the halfway point it turned into a great canyon road with fast smooth turns and almost no traffic! What a great way to finish the day! No pics today... Fireworks are just starting up outside. Happy Independence Day folks!!! P.S. Cross you fingers that the plugs don't foul again. I did pick up a spare set, just in case. PITA to change on the road though. |
