Former UNC President Bill Friday says Andy Griffith died this morning in Dare County. Friday, who is a close friend of the actor, confirmed that to WITN News.
Friday tells us the 86-year-old actor died at his Dare County home around 7:00 a.m. this morning.
Griffith attended UNC Chapel Hill where he earned a degree in Music. According to IMDb.com, Griffith was a regular on the Ed Sullivan show in the 1950's.
His legacy role, which earned him the title of "America's Favorite Sheriff"on "The Andy Griffith" show, set in fictional Mayberry, put North Carolina on the map in the entertainment industry. The show ran from 1960-1968, propelling a handful of spin-off programs. Griffith also produced and starred in the television series "Matlock."
Griffith received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 from President George W. Bush.
..they don't make 'em like they use to.Use to watch "The Andy Griffith Show" and all the spin off ones when i was younger(when they first aired).Still one of my favorite shows to watch...always had a "story within a story" with a moral to the story thing, expecially with Opie(Ron Howard, who has said he owes a lot to Andy Griffith)..Who could forget his "trusty sidekick" Barney Fife(Don Knotts). He was a great actor and will be missed. Now he can join the others in Mayberry in peace.Enjoy your town Andy, enjoy your town.....
Dang, I had a feeling he was running out of time due to his health issues. Sad to hear this. Next time I pass thru Mt.Airy, I'll have to check out the museum again.
I may have to look for "No Time for Sergeants", a movie I can watch over and over. If you get a chance to watch "A Face in the Crowd" where Griffith plays Lonesome Rhodes, it's time well spent. Plus, Patricia Neal has always had me fascinated.
