 Clean shaven, no cigar. This is the last of the Aussie snapshots I've been able to find, but there are more photos somewhere, so who knows. 1929 James OHV V-twin engine. It was the engine base they used on the company's racing bikes for some applications. The Depression, the war, and a general decline in whatever kept people from buying bikes, James made a slew of gray porridge tiddling 2 strokes. I'd have been delighted if he'd brought this one home. Spent some time looking for it a few years back, but, hey, there was a war going on and not every collectible survived over the last 80 years. | ||

Of note to no one in particular, the Freo boats were so far from just about everything, they were the test platform for integrating submarines. While most African Americans were in the "steward" designation, cooking and serving ward room officers, the sub crew members received the same psychological testing and extensive training in Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho, where the Navy's sub school is still located. An additional note would be (that) every crew member was trained to do every job on the boat, as space was limited and causalities could put specialists out out of commission. Of course, the African American submariners still had the designation of "steward" whether they were loading torpedoes or manning the helm. I grew up on a lake in a neighborhood referred to as the Gold Coast. To my knowledge, we were the only family there to ever have African Americans, friends of my father or business people, visit anyone there. I yet to attend a more crowded funeral than his, SRO and people outside the church down to the sidewalk. He gave a lot of young people jobs, especially college students. When I was a kid, his workbench, tools, and everything in his shop where he made furniture as a hobby were totally available to me. He could scare the bejezzus out of us kids, but we loved and respected him. | ||

In Wroclaw, Poland, formerly the German city of Breslau until the border was moved by the Ruskies after WW2. I'm singlehandedly overthrowing world communism by manipulating Glasnost and Perestroika. Like a graveyard shift mortician, it's not a glamorous job but someone has to do it. That's Derek next to me. I spoke of my Weltbummlen. Ruined him. He later traveled extensively with his wife and son, once the Iron Curtain fell. We drank Polish buffalo grass vodka which I bought with American money for $1.25 per liter at the Pevex store. American Lucky Strikes, twenty five cents a pack, Polish Marlboros, even cheaper. "This is the same vodka the president of Poland drinks," my associates said. I think it had something like wormwood in it.  While we live we have our story. While we breath it has no ending. I know what no angel knows, but moral amnesia keeps me from implicating my complicity. | ||

Memorial Day weekend. It's important to remember. To know the history of our faith is to maintain our faith. Gen. 48:22- Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow. There are Philistines and Pharisees clogging our world even today. But we must be strong and not turn our backs on our history, of recalling people's lives or remembering them for what we enjoy today at their sacrifice. Many people served, many died, so I can be free. What is man willing to sacrifice for the freedom of their family, their country? If nothing is worth dying for, is there anything worth living for? Since our Revolutionary War, about 1.3 million of our fellow citizens have died; for the honor of our country, for the freedom of our people. John 15:13(KJV) Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Why is the church a family? Why are we not cowards? Courage in the Bible is a value, an honor to be cherished. In our fallen world, running away is a value. Both are intangibles. One of these intangibles is worth dying for. God, family, country. Those tangibles in our lives have been purchased with courage and self sacrifice. 1 Cor 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 1 Cor 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. The bread and wine are a remembrance, a memorial if you will, to sacrifice and victory. Memorials inspire change to become better. No one ever joins the military in defense of their homeland with the purpose of dying. Tomorrow we will drive 30 miles to place flags on the graves of family members who served and survived to be fathers and grandfathers and great grandfathers. We walk in promise, and remember those who endured for us.  Just noticed I still have, and still use, that watchband. Outlased a lot of cheap watches. Stainless steel spring band from a company in Chicago, catch it on something and it comes right off the wrist. Originally developed for working stiffs around machinery. Didn't I scribble something about dragging up the subject of "conspiracy" on this thread in some other thread. I only remember what's important, therefore it must not have been. Still... Lately there has been some effort to transcribe 40 years of notes and references into a single hand scribed notebook and toss the originals filling plastic containers, etc. Much more than I expected to find, everything must be read and put in context of why it was written down in the first place. Therefore, the first "conspiracy" introduced is not a conspiracy at all. It's a few words on an index card that can be construed by the casual observer to be the brief notations by some tin foil hatter of the Xtian faith. The words on this card were: Eschaton The End of the Fallen World The Beginning of the Kingdom of God Thing being, I've never wrung my hands and gnashed my teeth about the end of the world. I'm not an "eschatologist." But, the words were printed for some reason, some thought without reason, some observation noted or as just some idea being pondered, the note itself being a reminder of that moment to be tucked away for future reference. First, I shall ponder on it again. Perhaps there is something behind the incident of writing which can be formulated into, if not a conspiracy, then a weighing of what point in time the acceleration of "the Fall" began and how it can be construed. From the mouths of babes.... Nice drive back from the races. Yes, I missed church, for a backslide into hanging with the apostates of racing. I did pray for the chap who died, overran the shutdown 1/2 past the timing lights at speed, and wonder how it could happen. I know no details, though it did shake more than a few people up. On the drive home I rang up a friend in Seattle. He stopped into the Cafe Racer for the live music, the spot where 5 people were shot last week. Mass shootings were not common when I was a lad. A sign of some not very good times. End times? I dunno. Can't even enjoy a cuppa with yer peeps w/o worrying about some demented soul going postal. Note to self: Steer clear of places frequented by the bad people. |
