...was a turning point of the war.So many lives were sacrificed for freedom.Would love to go to Normandy,France to "see and touch" there.Very hallowed and moving to be there.I always thank those who were there and lived to tell, but also to remember those who are there forever that gave their lives for freedom.Thank you for what you have done. Will never forget and always remember all of you.LT

I have held in my hands an M1 Garand that was made about 8 months before D-Day.

When I stripped it ALL the way down to its parts, I found grass(?) seeds long embedded in deep recesses of the gun. I shudder to think what the owner of that gun went through to get them there.

Thinking that it may have been freshly issued to some new brave soldier getting ready for the D-Day invasion gives me chills every time I pick it up.

What heros.

I used to live about an hour & a half away.

It's very moving to visit the sites.

The US military cemetery at Saint James is one of the most beautiful & peaceful places I've ever been.

Well worth a visit if you get the chance.

Thanks to all the D-Day vets. Some were brave, some were cowards, nearly all must have been scared. Yet they kicked some a$$ and helped bring about the end of WW II!

Some very nice pictures from D-day. This guy Capa might of made a pretty good photographer if he had worked at it a bit; )

What a huge day in not only American history, but world history.

Its one of the few places I've never been to that I will have to visit one day.
I have a friend who was in the AF for about a decade, while stationed in Europe he made the trip there and showed me the pictures from the trip.
Moving.
Seeing the bullet holes in the bunkers, he said it was creepy to think about.

Just checked the TV listings, it looks like History channel is running a marathon of Pawn Stars. WTF.

I think you'll find that contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe, you weren't alone!

Agree,Grumpy. My dad was WWII ETO vet and was in on the D-Day invasions. Had lots of good things to say about Brits, Aussies, French Resistance folks, etc.
Creeped me out the first time I saw Saving Private Ryan and got some idea what that 18 yo boy went through. Made my 30 yrs in fire service seem like cake walk.
On my bucket list to visit.

"Some were brave, some were cowards, nearly all must have been scared"

I'm paraphrasing, but...

"The only time you can be brave is when you are scared."

My grandfather went up Omaha beach and also survived the Battle of the Buldge and Korea. Infantry. I can only imagine what he saw.

My father also spent 2.5 years in Binh Thuy and De Nang during the Vietnam war. Memorial day, Veteran's Day, the 4th of July and D Day are always special to me.

I thank every person that sacrifices for my freedom.
