He wasn't on the grid for the start, started from the pits. I'm guessing that they knew they had issues before the start. While not a great thing, I see that as likely being better than something breaking out of the blue while on the track. No doubt they still have details to work out, but they are demonstrating some very solid results with a very fresh bike.

IIRC the commentators said the reason for Danny's delayed start was that he was out on rain tires (they were apparently having some really weird weather) and he decided to change to slicks at the last second. I don't think the delay had anything to do with the later engine issue.

Let's splash some facts on this and see if it helps . . . .

There was a huge rain and wind storm just prior to the race. So windy that one of the buckets full of water securing the Yosh tent went airborne and came through the roof of an awning 2 transporters away. Folks were committing their entire team, including Danny and Geoff and anybody walking by, to hold things down. The rain came down in torrents.

The riders were given an extra 15 minutes to change tires and 15 minutes of practice on rain tires. About the time all got changed the rain left just as quickly as it had appeared. Folks changed and changed back.

As a result of fuel consumed during the practice, many riders topped off prior to gridding.

Danny, after topping off and on on the lap coming around to grid discovered an insecure fuel cap and pitted. Took only 1 second to fix but it resulted in him starting from the pits, after the pack of 100mph+ bikes passed.

It was a tribute to both Danny and the 1190RS that he moved from 18th to 9th in like a single lap. He was, as was quite obvious, wringing the bike to it's limits.

I think . . . based on listening to some folks in the pits . . . that he may have simply missed a shift and spun the motor to the point where it's whirlyparts sought communion with the sun.

Unfortunate? Yep.

Fatal? Nope.

I expect today to be a great day for them.

It's racing . . . . and the 1190RS is "exceeding expectations" on the long fast Road America course.

My apologies for screwing the rumors up.

Glad to hear it's not likely fatal. Good luck today, boys. Wish I was there!

My apologies for screwing the rumors up.

Rumors? I didn't see any rumors posted; just what the "unwashed" among us gleaned from our limited sources of information plus a little speculation.

Thanks for posting the facts. No need to be snotty about it.

It really was amazing seeing the 1190's power up the long straight with ease! It truly was some bizarre weather before and during that race.

Well if you throw out enough speculation, someone will some facts is bound to come along and smack you straight! Thanks for doing that Court. EBR is putting in some very impressive performances for such a new bike. Erik is still saying they can get more out of it too. Great to watch!

The EBR team and riders certainly got a lot of time time and attention from the announcers

Would have been so great to see what he could have done if he hadn't had engine troubles

Slick was moving up so fast I lost him for one of the laps. Weather was crazy. After the race one of the riders stopped to have a discussion with the turn # 12 flag man. He was about 10 riders late putting the red & yellow striped flag out and pointing to the sky. We saw some incredible saves.

note: some of the above was an understatement

I suspect some of Courts frustration carried over from the Racing section. I understand how that can happen when two topics are so similar. Its easy to think that your in the same thread when your not.

Court,

You surely are gifted with wordcraft. I am still chuckling..."that he may have simply missed a shift and spun the motor to the point where it's whirlyparts sought communion with the sun."

I love reading your posts.

Thank you.

I owe an apology, I think, to a couple folks if my post was read as acerbic. It wasn't my intent and was, most likely, the result of an elevated level of frustration putting out fires ignited by intellectual arsonists with regard to EBR and the 1190RS. None of whom, by the way, are Badwebbers.

I apologize.

Most importantly . . thanks to all the EBR fans who made an impression (yep, on at least one other team) at Road America.

The "fastest bike" question is always in flux . . The "best bike" question will never be answer . . but the "best fans and owners" is a slam dunk.

Tow of the most important things to be able to say . . "I'm sorry" and "Thank you" . . all in the same damn post!

:-)

I asked Erik about what had happened and I asked "was it a valve" ? He hesitantly said "yes". I was trying to read into that answer...

I just started watching the 2nd superbike race. They talked to Slick about his mechanical, and he blamed himself for a bad downshift. Good news for EBR IMO.

Don't worry Court I knew I wasn't doing rumors. More to the story but Court has already described the problem more eloquently than I could.
