welcome to the american legal system.
if you got money you can get off on almost everything.

Im in NC, only about 30 minutes from where the trial was held _ I am just glad its over and I dont have to see it in the news every single day anymore.

What was he said in the press conference afterward? "God's not done with me yet." He may be surprised to find out exactly what that means in the afterlife.

He, bill clinton, jesse jackson, a token kennedy, al gore, the politician in Cali whose mistress secretary went missing and the NY politician who sent out pics of his junk to women should all band together and create an organization to champion the rights of women. With the republicans war on women in full swing I think it is needed. Maybe let david Letterman and bill mahr be the spokesmen.

It would be interesting to hear how the jury split. In the first Blago trial, they had a single juror who just wasn't going to convict him, regardless of the evidence. Sounds like no retrial for JE though. Lucky man. He may want to seriously be asking what God's plans are for him.

The problem wasn't that Edwards isn't scum.

He is. While there are lots of people worse, ( cannibal killers come to mind.... and the favorite philosopher of the former White House Communication Director ) few of them have the ego, and narcissism, to run for President while having an affair, hiding behind a dying wife, and having the woman and your child hide in the home of a campaign aid.... and his wife....and get little old ladies to give you darn near a million dollars to use as bribery and blackmail money...... Yep, that's pretty rare.

My favorite though is the hair video. Played without sound... it goes on and on. It's Understandable that one's makeup must be perfect. TV lights require makeup that looks garish and weird in the daylight, but that's the nature of the beast. One want't to look ones best. Richard Nixon's debate with JFK cost him a buttload of votes, and possibly the election as his beard shadow and sweating with poor makeup made him look thugish compared with JFK aristocratic good looks.

But after a minute.... the video gets really creepy. This is a very self obsessed guy. Witness his completely self serving remarks after getting out of this jam.

But.... getting a conviction of election finance law is really really hard. The law is deliberately written to seem good to the public, yet let the politicians get away with stuff. Remember, in America, ONLY the politicians are allowed to take bribes. And they have wrapped layer after layer of bs around the bribe taking..... mostly to keep out of jail. So a failure to convict in this case is not that surprising.

It got down to.... did the money he took to try and win the election by criminal cover up of his infidelity count as a campaign contribution?

You or I would take about half a second to respond to that question, but Edwards is very rich from lying to people, and very good at it. So he could afford some high priced talent to confuse and lie to the jury. It only takes one.

Oddly enough, justice may have been served in this case, it's possible that he didn't violate campaign laws. He certainly violated other laws, but no one is interested in going after such a rich and powerful fellow for minor matters involving honor, honesty, blackmail, and bribes..... ( I hope his kid sues him for every penny..... and I'm pretty sure the kid will have right on his side... )

Here's the video. To music, otherwise it's really creepy. Remember this when he figures it's time to run again....

I realize I'm pretty darn cynical, but in this case the scum probably wasn't convictable simply because the law is so badly written. It's generations of laws written to allow the politicians to have money to spend to get re-elected. Even to the point they have a check box on the tax form, and have a program to take taxpayer money, ( at gunpoint if need be ) and give it to campaign funds.

I'll bet you that there is actually no law that forbids a scumbag from taking money from a rich old lady to use to cover up his having an affair while using his dying wife as a shield.

Is there a law that puts money given to you to hide you sticking your mistress and your baby with a staffer, in the legal category of "acceptable bribes" ( also known as campaign money ) ???????

Sure, it's money to help him win..... but so are a lot of other things. So it's possible that he was innocent of what he was charged with.

Darn it.
