Those are actually the first shots I've taken with the D2X since last fall- been using that Lumix you convinced me to get for just about everything... Doesn't do this type of shot very well! I have missed shooting with the D2X!
saved from the humane society. a neccessary evil, it helps people get good animals, but it also sucks the life out of dogs if they're there too long. Niko had no personality when i first brought him home, but after a few months he totally changed. He's a big, goofy, clumsy thing. And he intimidates the crap out of everyone!
Had a GF once who had one, NOT goofy and clumsy- she'd snatch birds out of mid-air if they flew too low in the backyard...
New development for me: I'm now considering adopting another Basenji, almost a year after my buddy Loki passed- this time it's a 5YO tri-color, a victim of his owner's economic situation, raised from birth by them- by all descriptions a great dog, great fit for us.
Now, gotta justify a pretty high adoption fee and transport, then the $$$ to FINALLY fence in my backyard... anyone have experience installing their own chainlink fence? I've got a post driver, can recruit some country boys, should have enough $$$... halp!
Squids, I fenced in about a 1/4 acre behind our garage and shed. As always call diggers hotline to mark where the under ground stuff is. I used the 2in pipe provided with the chain link at the corners and gates and then used 8ft wire posts in between. You will need a come-a-long to help stretch the fencing, be careful as to NOT over stretch the fence as it will bend the posts. Good luck with the new furiend!! Shout if you have questions about the fencing.
IIRC my fence cost us about $7 a foot. That included the posts; corners and plain, top rail, one double gate and a single gate and all the hardware like gate latches and the aluminum gadgets to attach the fence to the top rail and posts. We rented a gas powered post hole digger for all the posts and as M2 said you'll need a come-a-long. Not hard to do but the more hands the merrier. And if those hands already have experience the better.
Thanks Ky, et al- "included" about $7 a foot? How long ago was that? What you described was pretty much what I need to do, prolly 2 gates, guessing about 8-10 anchor poles, and I should be able to recruit friends who are builders- my ace is cooking up a whoopass spread of food, available throughout the day, plus a beer or two.
This post driver I have could be OK- but, I'm guessing I may need some gas powered machinery.
Thanks all for my thread hijack- fence building is good for good neighbors, I've heard.
My GF's dog (ours? just back from a fresh grooming) is free to go outdoors just as we are, no need for supervision, except for the occasional squirrel/neighbor dog/young child.
Gonna put up a fence so she can have a buddy. Kinda hate to lose the freedom, but...
Sorry, haven't checked this thread in a few days. We put our fence up probably about 10 years ago. We didn't have a dog to keep in but we wanted to keep others out and the kids in plus the neighbor had just died so we figured it would be a good time to get one up, you know, after the old and before the new. I asked the guy I bought it from about just driving posts and was advised against it so mine are in about 12-15" of concrete. They're not going anywhere. Also, I'm going off of poor memory, I "think" we paid about $700 and we put up about 100' of fence. I was lucky because two neighbors let me attach to their existing fences.
it was kinda fun just tooling around the backyard. I put my glasses on and went down the road about a mile at speed. The dog loved it... he got to eat a couple of bugs but I wouldn't want to do it for a long haul. I'm going to try it again tomorrow. I'm going wheeling and I post something up in the Jeep thread.
Dude, she's a "whatever she feels like" dog. She has a nose like a bloodhound. She found that one in the blackberry bushes, I'd rather she not kill them because they keep bugs out of my blackberries and strawberries but she also keeps the raccoons, moles, opposums and groundhogs out of the yard. She has really been an asset to our family. Thanks again.
Beautiful Basenji Squids, reads like a pretty great dog too. Wonder if he's a climber? Guess you'll find out.
Eddie could use a companion, I've been hoping to find a young female buddy for him, he's a little territorial but does better with the ladies. Need to take some new pics of him to post up I guess.
Ky, my dog is scared of garter snakes, he tries to run off whenever I catch them. He is a critter gitter though, if I let him.
Buggles- you can go into the BRAT site and fill out an adoption application- after that you apparently get on a mailing list for new dogs that go on the rescue list.
I've just kept a bookmark in my browser for BRAT, and go there every so often to see who's new. IIRC, somewhere in FL there was the "Wimauma Pack", pups from a puppy mill, and they were being raised up and acclimated...
Problem is, my fundage is getting kinda low, got a boat to get going soon, and I REALLY want to fence in the yard before a new addition. My GF's dog is completely trustworthy going in and out, no fence whatsoever- she's in when we're in, out when we're out. Might go check out another dog in the park next door, or a little kid, will definitely chase a tree rat, but that's predictable and OK. It'd be a miracle to find another dog as well behaved as her, so new fence it i$$$...
Oh well.
Have you checked out lure coursing? GAWDD I'd love to put some Basenjis into that sport...
Weird, but that took me some time to find a GOOD vid of what these dogs can do... fun to see/remember a Basenji at full tilt! My old buddy was a little lankier, few dogs of any kind could match him at speed.
Update: On Sunday we had a couple of women come and visit, to interview me and the GF about taking on a Basenji rescue. I think things went well, dunno yet, but I loaned them my book from Susan Coe, FWIW it's the Basenji "bible". She'd not seen it yet, so unless I'm judged a complete ass or something, I've aced it.
Update on me: Looks like there were several applicants wanting to adopt Spartacus, and someone else came out on top... oh well.
I'm just glad to hear a happy ending to that story. Until I get the back yard fenced, I'm kinda coming up short... our dog Chloe, being so well behaved as to be pretty much independent to go out and in on her own, well, I guess we're spoiled to have her. It'd be a sheer miracle to find another one like her!
Not to highjack, but Mark, how's your mom? Might throw an update up on that other thread...
