Pray for Ross Cochran. He was critically injured in a hit & run while on his Buell. A great rider and friend. I have been riding scooters with Ross for years. He is a great rider, you have to be to sling around a vintage scooter. We recently went shopping for his new to him Blast. He only had it for a few days when, he was in the hit and run. We were supposed to meet-up for a ride right before this happened. His last post on facebook: "Two wheels in the morning and afternoon. Hockey game and organization tonight. What else can you ask for?" http://www.newschannel5.com/story/18088693/motorcy clist-critically-injured-in-hit-and-run-crash |

Press Release from Nashville Police. May 3, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Three persons have been killed and two others have been critically injured in five separate motorcycle-involved crashes in Nashville since Sunday night. Fatal Crashes The latest crash occurred at 11:30 a.m. today on Briley Parkway near Centennial Boulevard. Mini Zaki, 20, of Antioch, was riding a 2007 Suzuki G-60 toward Robertson Avenue when he lost control and was ejected. Zaki died at the scene. Two friends, one on another motorcycle and the other in a car, were traveling near Zaki at the time. Speeding is believed to have been a contributing factor in this fatal crash. On Wednesday morning, Bradley Collier, 35, of Nashville, died after his Kawasaki motorcycle collided with the rear of a landscape company box truck on Woodlawn Drive at Compton Road. On Sunday night, Mary B. Johnson, 39, of Greenbrier, died when the Honda motorcycle she was riding collided with a Jeep Cherokee on Lickton Pike. Critical Injury Crashes On Wednesday afternoon, Bradford Hill, 30, of Nashville, was critically injured when the 1992 Yamaha he was riding collided with a Kia sedan being driven by a 16-year-old girl on Wedgewood Avenue at the entrance to Belmont University. On Wednesday night, Robert Cochran, III, 27, of Nashville, was critically injured when the Buell motorcycle he was riding collided with a blue Nissan four-door vehicle on Dickerson Pike at Hancock Street. The driver of the Nissan fled the scene. The car should have front end damage. Efforts are continuing to identify the driver and locate the Nissan. All five crashes remain under investigation and involve varying contributing factors, not all necessarily on the part of the motorcyclists. The Nashville police department reminds all drivers, motorcyclists and those behind the wheels of four-wheel vehicles, to use caution and drive defensively. With the nicer weather, more motorcycles are expected on Nashville’s streets and thoroughfares. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation provides these tips and general guidelines for riding a motorcycle safely: Be visible: • Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles and reacting in time. • Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night. • Use reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle. • Be aware of the blind spots cars and trucks have. • Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. • If a motorist doesn’t see you, don’t be afraid to use your horn. Dress for safety: • Wear a quality helmet and eye protection. • Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. • Wear leather or other thick, protective clothing. • Choose long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. • Remember – the only thing between you and the road is your protective gear. Apply effective mental strategies: • Constantly search the road for changing conditions to increase time and space safety margins. • Give yourself space and time to respond to other motorists’ actions. • Give other motorists time and space to respond to you. • Use lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible. • Watch for turning vehicles. • Signal your next move in advance. • Avoid weaving between lanes. • Pretend you’re invisible, and ride extra defensively. • Don't ride when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. • Know and follow the rules of the road, and stick to the speed limit. Know your bike and how to use it: • Practice. Develop your riding techniques before going into heavy traffic. Know how to handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces. Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don’t see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they’ve never been on a motorcycle and can’t properly judge your speed. |

Sorry to hear about your buddy, Barker. When he gets to feeling better remind him that Dickerson Pike is like a gauntlet with bullets, broads, and cars criss-crossing at high speeds all the time. AND, the drivers are usually intoxicated! Oh heck, he probably knows that already... I only rode my Blast a few times on Dickerson and was spooked every time. I hope the police find the driver and manage to stick some real time on him. Unfortunately that area isn't exactly known to be cop friendly. Sending positive thoughts his way! |

WTF, Over?! Matt, prayers up and over yonder, do keep us posted on his progress. Buddy, I grew up in Mt. Juliet, as a genuine hooligan, back in the late 70's and 80's, and somehow I still live. Today, Nashville has a troubling resemblance to Atlanta. As much as I love 2 wheeling, I'd have to up my game to ride back there again. Is there any good way to install a train horn on a scooter, without sacrificing performance? Discuss, PLEASE! |

Update: Ross is now concious. They have removed his tubes and he is talking and able to move his hands and legs. He's got a way to go, but at least things are looking better. |

Actually, I DO have that particular horn on the XB! (Didn't follow the link, duhh...) I'd thought they made a "double-barrel" version of some sort, but that's the one- got it for about $40 from my buds at Dual Sport Touring... now that's why everyone asks me why I butchered my flyscreen- well, so the Stebel can TALK!!! Barker, keep us posted, buddy, and keep the rubber side down! |

If you give us his address, we could send him some cards. Don't underestimate the power get well cards can generate. They helped me considerably when I had my surgery in March, as well as a friend in New Zealand who didn't believe in them until he was hospitalized. Cards are inexpensive and they impart a real feeling that people care. |

Sorry for the long delay. I have had very busy week. UPDATE: I just visited Ross for the first time in the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Trauma Unit. He has been in/out surgeries. Family has asked for visitors to wait to see him so he can get his rest. He has been there for two weeks. Doctors estimate he could be there for at least 3 more days. After that he is scheduled for at least 2 weeks in a rehab facility. His body is very broken. Both arms broken, 12 broken ribs and hole in his lower body. Ross and I are not exactly sure what happened, but police report that he maneuvered to avoid the car. He was hit and ran over. They are still looking for the perpetrator. Prayers for physical and mental strength are appreciated Yesterday he texted me and wanted me to come visit. I stopped by to see him. He was glad to see me. It was hard for him to talk or get around without his oxygen. We talked about an upcoming scooter rally that he has organized. He is not excited that he will not be able to ride/participate. He said he survived this for a reason. He said he wants to devote his time educating/informing folks about 2-wheeled safety from now on. He is body was crushed. He is and was in great pain, but now he says that mentally it's hard for him. It has been long hard fight. Folks have asked where they could send cards. He has moved around a bit and hopefully will be moved to a rehab facility soon. I think the best way to get the cards/notes to him would be mailing them to me. I will get them to him ASAP where every he might be. I think he would greatly appreciate a positive word of encouragement, even if it is from folks he hasn't met. He is a long time scooter/motorcycle rider, but he is new to the Buell world. Ross Cochran c/o Matt Barker 1134 Howard Ave. Nashville, TN 37216 If you want help financially, his friends have set up FundRazr.com page. Donations will go to help cover rent/utilities while he is out of work, and for his family members who live far away from Nashville and are currently staying at hotels in the area. https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/dJ1E9 (Message edited by barker on May 14, 2012) |
