This was posted on my other favorite motorcycle forum -- wildguzzi.com

Passing it along because it's a great story, and I thought that some here might like to help out:

A good friend of mine (and many) recently did a remarkable thing. Not too long after I met him, George was diagnosed with colon cancer. This was his second battle with cancer (prostate the first time) and through it all he fought with more strength and dignity than I ever could. He's cancer-free now and loves riding his Ducati Monster 696 whenever he can. He's a very skilled, smooth, and safe rider. If someone goes down or breaks down on a ride he's always the first volunteer to end his ride, go home, and come back with his trailer. When I needed a truck and trailer to go pick up my new 750 he volunteered in a heartbeat and was genuinely happy to spend his Saturday afternoon helping me out. Just an all around great guy, loved by many.

Anyway, on to the remarkable part. He had heard about someone who, after beating cancer, walked all the way across Deals Gap. This inspired him to do the same in hopes that maybe it would show someone who was in a situation similar to the one he'd been in what can be accomplished by just plain refusing to give up. He started training last October at his local walking track and eventually moved on to walking up and down hills near his home. I think it would be an accomplishment for anyone to be able to walk 14 miles through the mountains of TN/NC (the actual full length of Deals Gap, not the 11 miles so popularly referred to), but what he did was astounding. He woke up at 5:30 last Saturday morning at the resort, walked to Fugitive Dam and back, then ate breakfast. After that he walked north all the way to Tabcat Bridge. Being the badass he is, he then turned around and walked all the way back to the resort as the ultimate F-U to cancer. Did I mention he's pushing 60 yrs of age now? I can only pray to have as much enthusiasm for life as he does when I'm his age.

So, now to the favor part. US 129 Photos has this regular "photo of the week" competition. The public votes on their favorite photos and in the end the person with the most votes gets a 24"x36" poster of his/her photo. If you would be so kind as to take a few seconds of your day to vote for him (he's about halfway down the page, on the left in a hi-viz green t-shirt, the only pedestrian on the page), it would be a great favor to a great friend. I'm hoping he'll have that print on the wall of his garage as a memento of what a remarkable thing he did to inspire others. Thank you.

I just got back from running an errand. When I left, we were ahead by 1150 votes. Half an hour later, we're behind by over 14,000 votes. How in the hell are they running the votes up so fast? I smell a rat.

The owner of the site zero'd the vote count on both Monkey Boy and George. He thought we were using a program to generate votes. This is the E-Mail I sent him:

I'm one of the people who has been voting for George, the pedestrian in the high-vis t-shirt. To my knowledge, there has been no automated voting. There has been several people who have spent hours in front of their computers running up votes, myself included. The following is taken from Badweatherbikers.com. The same post was on Wildguzzi.com and advrider.com:

This was posted on my other favorite motorcycle forum -- wildguzzi.com

As I stated earlier, To my knowledge, nobody was using any program to run up votes. I would vote, then refresh the page and vote again. I personally ran up hundreds of votes. It's almost all I've done in the past 24 hours.
If this is against your policy, then I apologize. I was just trying to help someone who has been fighting cancer, and would not let it break his spirit. I know that there are others, mostly on Wild Guzzi and Bad Weather Bikers who also feel as strongly as I do.
If we are disqualified because of our overzealousness,(and I really can't blame you if you do) then we are discussing buying a poster size print from you to donate to George. How much would a 24 X 36 poster size print cost?
Once again, I apologize if we violated your rules.

It's O.K.; I got an e-mail from the owner/photographer:

Yes there was a BOT used we can detect that. Don't know by whom but our web designer did detect one for his voting. As I had e-mail someone earlier after have I had found out who he was and what he had been through I had already decided to give him a poster no matter what. My Mother has and still is battling cancer for well over 20 years so I admire what he has gone through so he will be getting a poster no matter what. I leave it up to my web designer to keep up with the site and again someone did put a bot on his photo and I do know for a fact you all did spend a lot of time voting. So again do not worry all he has to do is send me his info and he will be getting a poster as I stated. Plus anyone that walks the " Dragon " All I can say is WOW.

Thanks
Dave

M2statz; my heart's working well. I'm having a hell of a time recovering from the surgery, though. My chest, neck and back hurt pretty much constantly. I still can't sleep in a regular bed. I'm a side sleeper, and after being on my side for a short while, I wake up with a sharp pain in my sternum. I attempt to sleep in a bed about once a week; last night was the most recent try. It's a good thing that I have a recliner, or I don't know what I'd do.
However, I have more energy than I've had in a long time, and I'm able to walk for miles without any problems. I'm recovering; just not quite as fast as I would like.
