If you ever visit a SOCOM or SEAL unit, check out the bulletin boards for little newspaper clippings. You'll see some article from an Italian paper about some terrorist cell taken down, and a tiny note with words like "Delta 4" or "SOG" ( not a current name ). The people that know, know, and they really prefer no one else do. Heck the reason it's "SEAL Team 6" is at the time there were only 3 teams. the "6" was disinformation. Back on the subject... I appreciate the concern, but it does say further down that they want trustworthy and secure individuals, and the easiest way to define those people is to go through the Background Check for TS clearance. there is simply no reason for a TS/S/SCI requirement for emergency response to disasters. NONE. The whole point of disaster preparedness is sharing of information, public announcements, public notice, and published plans of response. Also it is REACTIVE position for when disaster does strike, not a WATCH STANDING position. That is pure intelligence iconography. It breaks no less than 6 Intell Oversight Charters. Maybe I can clear up a couple of Cityslicker's questions Response is only one element of FEMA's actions and natural disasters are only one category of events they deal with. From FEMA's website , to promote accuracy FEMA Mission FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards. DISASTER. It strikes anytime, anywhere. It takes many forms -- a hurricane, an earthquake, a tornado, a flood, a fire or a hazardous spill, an act of nature or an act of terrorism. My second point - considering the cost and time spent performing a background investigation (since a lot FEMA jobs don't require a TS to apply for a position, you just have to be able to get one to keep the position)I don't think it's a tool to limit the applicants. As for Chicago, well the 50 US states plus the territories are divided into 10 FEMA regions. FEMA HQ in DC uses Watch Officers as does each FEMA Region HQ. Region 5 is headquartered in Chicago And I don't know this for a fact, but I'd bet part of the requirement for the TS is because there may be certain facilities or resources within each region that are Top Secret - so having a working knowledge of the who, what, where etc of those assets especially when they are affected or threatened by disaster - natural of man-made - would best be served by someone with a TS. Cityslicker - were you interested in a FEMA position or did you just notice it web-surfing? If you wanted to apply, I'd just recommend you do a little research before the interview. The Prez signed the bill allowing him to rule with an iron fist, and the D's in Congress claim that the Prez insisted he get the iron fist provisions. But hey! Obama says he won't use the bill to rule with an Iron Fist. Romney says the same thing. Romney claims HE won't use the power to rule as king, and he's sure Obama won't either. Presumably, no one who ever gets elected Prez will ever be a bad guy who uses that power. Believe that if you will. If you actually think no one will ever try to be king, instead of a public servant, you obviously havn't learned anything about the history of the planet. You have to keep a bit of an eye on that kind of thing. We certainly have strayed from the limitations designed to keep the government from screwing with you, and that has been going on for over a century. It has accelerated recently, IMO, and I see little sign that freedom is increasing for the people. It's always the little things. For example. The mayor of NYC has this thing about micromanaging people's diets. I'm all for safe and clean food, but he's a jerk. Ask any New Yorker. or... Some group just called on Obama to "issue an executive order" banning evil food stops on the campaign. They don't want the politicians, ( who, traditionally, eat like the State Fair is on for months, Now years, of a campaign ) to set a bad example for "the children" ( the excuse all do-gooder a$$hats use for butting into other people's business ) by eating "carcinogenic" and "obesifying" food on tv, etc. Is that a good idea? Is it even close to being a power we want ANYONE to have? You might admire BHO. You may not care if you have no clue what he did in college. I, myself don't care that he smoked and snorted whatever, since he survived, and does not seem to let his remaining addictions rule him too much. I don't care that he's tried dog in his diet.
