Of course, the recent films with Robert Downey (Ironman) Jr. are good as well.

I'm a big fan. They did a good job of bringing it into modern times. Even so, Basil Rathbone is the sentimental favorite.
My Japanese wife and has trouble with English accents and the BBC is a 50/50 proposition for her, although she did make it all the way through Downton Abbey.

the actual books will all be off of copyright by this time but the character can be controlled in other ways although I doubt that it is; there have been far too many knock offs.
