Fahren, an interesting [not to DD:-)] comment posted at the end of that article:

Mick says:
First, while I agree w/ Mencken in principle (and Jim), we are not a “Democracy”. The US is a Democratic Republic. Democracy is what is practiced in Venezuela– the tyranny of the majority. Our system is based on a written compact of laws. Heck, we don’t technically have ANY right to vote in Presidential elections. The states could elect to choose electors w/o popular vote! The framers specifically made it that way because they foresaw and experienced the stupidity of the masses, and the criminality of the politicians.

The great American patriot Benjamin Franklin was asked, upon his emergence from the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787, what form of government the United States was going to have. Franklin answered succinctly, "A Republic, if you can keep it."

But the main Amendment that tipped the scales from the national government of the United States being a mere republic to being a true representative democracy was the often-overlooked Seventeenth Amendment, which took effect in 1913. Since 1913 the U.S. Senate has been elected directly by the voters, rather than being appointed by the state legislatures. That makes the national government democratic in form, as well as being a republic.

On December 23, 1913, the Federal Reserve Act, also known as the Glass-Owen Bill, was passed. The Republican controlled Senate rammed the bill through when many members of the US Congress were home for the holiday. The President, Dr. Thomas Woodrow Wilson, signed it into law one hour after being passed by the Congress! Somebody very powerful really wanted this law passed.

1913. Is this when the united states (l/c intentional) was hijacked as a true Republic into a Democracy, but called a Democratic Republic to hide the fact?

The boy stood on the burning deck,

A string of sausages round his neck,

The captain said "oh come inside"

"I think they would be better fried!"

Much to his mum and dad's dismay
Horace ate himself one day.
He didn't stop to say his grace,
he just sat down and ate his face.
Just a minute his father cried,
those eyeballs would be better fried!

One bright day in the middle of the night
Two dead boys arose to fight
Back to back they faced each other
Then drew their swords and shot each other
Now, a deaf man passing heard the noise
And came and found the two dead boys.

If you don't believe my story
Ask the blind man
He saw it all.
