While I see City complaining about the direction that the .gov is heading, it seems far more "in sorrow over what was" than "America Sucks". I could be wrong, of course.

Funny, about Outer Space. Certain genres of science fiction use distance for social or political commentary. While it could be unpopular or fatal to argue the merits of a system placed in your own 'verse, Placing it in disguise on Epsilon Eridani and having a conflict with warring tribes of giant blue frogs can not only keep you alive, but get published. You can see how complaining about the treatment of women in Boston circa 1850 could be unwise, but martian women can be shown as Equals. Likewise, mocking the sins of the corrupt officials surrounding Mao in his time would be....unpleasant, doing the same to the blue Frog folk...... you get the point.

In that vein.... J Pournelle's Co-Dominium 'verse has the US and the USSR eventually join in world domination, as the US gets more Soviet and the USSR gets more capitalistic. With a backdrop of welfare cities and extreme elitism, extrapolated from the Soviet Party elites and US "government class", you have a recipe for conflict and "what ifs". Toss in space travel to give more sociological variety to play of in the stories, and you have a pretty good playground for a leading expert in space warfare. Good stuff. I commend it to you.

Jerry Pournelle is well aware that the USSR is "gone" and the future he describes is not going to happen..... But the trend of socialist/capitalist ratio's for the last century has been in that direction.

Makes me wonder. Oh, well. Murphy was an optimist.

Am I glad that I don't live in your world

Doesn't quite answer the question.

Now, as far as rail stations and gas chambers, what makes these impossible in this country. What would prevent these from ever being employed here?

Answer that question with a backdrop of a Constitution that no longer limits governmental power as long as that government is acting in a manner deemed to "promote the general welfare".

.. who would "they" use the gas chambers on?

Undesirables. Since the Executive Order allowing imprisonment, without trial, notification of status, etc. is for "terrorist" suspects, ( supposedly ) I would look to those already condemned as most likely to be domestic terrorists, according to the dept of Homeland Security. You were all for the DHS, right? That Glorious Creation of George Bush? Me, I was against it.

Since the DHS has very specifically targeted Veterans, folk who believe in limited government etc. Here, let me google "dhs terrorist list"...

http://www.networkworld.com/community/blog/ridicul ous-dhs-list-you-might-be-domestic-ter

1. Expressions of libertarian philosophies (statements, bumper stickers)

2. Second Amendment-oriented views (NRA or gun club membership, holding a CCW permit)

3. Survivalist literature (fictional books such as "Patriots" and "One Second After" are mentioned by name)

4. Self-sufficiency (stockpiling food, ammo, hand tools, medical supplies)

5. Fear of economic collapse (buying gold and barter items)

6. Religious views concerning the book of Revelation (apocalypse, anti-Christ)

7. Expressed fears of Big Brother or big government

8. Homeschooling

9. Declarations of Constitutional rights and civil liberties

10. Belief in a New World Order conspiracy

(numbers added to keep things straight )

Let's see... Just talking about me, here. YMMV

1. yep
2. yep
3. Yep, been reading dystopian stories since before many were born. Did my High school Senior thesis on "Survival" with a secondary emphasis on Urban transformation and ghettos.
4. nope, though I have a few weeks of water and enough food to get through a blizzard.
5. Well, duh! 15%+ unemployment? Collapse of European Social net in progress? Ruinious energy policies? Not buying overpriced gold, though. made sense when it was cheap, but now it's just how guys like Soros get richer.
6. Nope. Not my gig. You folks enjoy.
7. I'm not supposed to be afraid of Big Brother? Have you READ 1984? Seen the movie? I'm supposed to EMBRACE a giant bureaucracy that controls my life, for my own good? All hail the Holy State? I guess I'm down for a big "yep".
8. Too lazy. Do correct textbooks and point out the errors. Makes me real popular at PTA meetings.
9. yep
10. Not so much. Greedy folk wanting to have more money and power? Sure. Do they talk to one another? sure. Is there a globalist movement? sure. Barry is a globalist. But Conspiracy? Is it a Conspiracy if it's this open? More like a political movement. One I disagree with, but not some nut job thing like the 9/11 truthers.

Answer your question?

You know; it's quite possible that those really are Death Camps, and the Government is going to start Mass Cleansing of the population.
Now, since I enjoy living in the best country in the world, and I'm really enjoying the benefits that come along with it, I figure I'm safe.
However, the Government is working in secret to develop their mind control ray, and, while they haven't got it perfected yet, they have to settle for now with just being able to read minds, and to collect the information on who is a threat to their control. I strongly suggest you make up a tinfoil cap and wear it at all times, because the people who are trying to warn the rest of the population will be the first on their list. The tinfoil will act as a shield to prevent them from reading your minds, and you'll be free to spread the word about the Conspiracy.
I would also have a chemical analysis of my drinking water performed (By somebody you can trust) to make sure it isn't Fluoridated, 'cause that's another way they're trying to control the populace.
Me; as I stated, I'm no threat to them at all. I'll blithely go my way enjoying my freedoms to do as I please without hurting anyone else, and I'll enjoy my life to the best of my abilities in one of the greatest places to live in history.

Gee Rocket, Candidate Romney agrees with you. He promises he won't ever use the dictatorial powers the President now has, and he's sure that President Obama won't ever use the powers he insisted on in the bill. Just like Obama promised he'll Never use the powers he insisted on. I presume you believe and Trust Romney.?

Crusty, there are no death camps. ( "death panels" in the "affordable healthcare act" yes, those exist. Ask Paul Krugman. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aogCaGv9i78 )

There are FEMA camps for temporary processing of thousands of people, but that's just in case of an Emergency. Presumably tornados, fires, floods, etc. I never heard any politician say they were for rioters or undesirable elements.

Then again, they wouldn't, would they? But I'm not worried about that. Seems far fetched to me. ( as did those last train rides the Gypsies made... )

Funny you should mention mind control rays.... let's google that. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2555/do-t infoil-helmets-provide-adequate-protection-against -mind-control-rays
http://www.eclectech.co.uk/mindcontrol.php

I'm not worried about "rays", just NBC & ABC "news" broadcasts. I don't think the aliens care about the Zimmerman case.

If Romney wins and decides to invade Iran, I'm pretty sure we'll hear some dire warnings from the D's. Bet ya.

I like the Constitution - I took an oath to defend it against All Enemies, Foreign and Domestic.
I have been in and part of the military since age 16. I have been out for six years ... but I was out for six years as well when they called me up for a little ethnic Clensing in Bosnia.
Every time Slavs start killing each other, or killing another sect in large numbers (typically an estimated 100K or more - my phone rings) It is a very short list of people that are interpreter qualified, NATO certified and UN compliant for interview, interrogation, and investigation of crimes against humanity.
I have been mobilized for four ethnic clensings. And the South East Asia Farcus - twice.

I have seen all too well the propaganda, the tirade and the angst ramped up enough to know that it is indeed coming.

Believe as you wish. It is, for now, a free country.
But as you enjoy your freedoms - consider heavily and critically.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The PPACA establishes and entrenches carve out benefits for specific religions, while establishing forced compliance and fines to others, based solely on faith.
It is government by Administrative Fiat.
http://www.firstthings.com/blogs/secondhandsmoke/2 012/04/26/congress-makes-fool-of-clueless-sebelius -over-free-birth-control-rule/

Freedom of Speech.... Just not where there could be an official that is under guard of the Secret Service, nor on designated Federal Property
HR 347 `(1) the term `restricted buildings or grounds' means any posted, cordoned off, or otherwise restricted area--

`(A) of the White House or its grounds, or the Vice President's official residence or its grounds;

`(B) of a building or grounds where the President or other person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting; or

`(C) of a building or grounds so restricted in conjunction with an event designated as a special event of national significance; and

`(2) the term `other person protected by the Secret Service' means any person whom the United States Secret Service is authorized to protect under section 3056 of this title or by Presidential memorandum, when such person has not declined such protection.'.

Or Freedom of the Press ....
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/27785 39/posts

Or the Right to Peacably Assemble....
Been following the difference of endorsement and enforcement vs Tea Party and OWS ?

The right to petition ..... Unless you are labelled a subversive, terrorist, espionage, conspirast or radical as defined in National Defense Athorization Act .... that allows for American citizens suspected the above to be indefinitely detained in military custody without charge or trial.

As they did not read the bill before they signed it, and it is administrated by the IRS; (nor did they listen to the majority of their constituency that was & and remains opposed to it/ Including 26 states that are suing against it) there is no clearer definition of Taxation without Representation in our history. It is a BAD BILL.

wanna double down for some real fun and tackle the Second Amendment ?

Now, Now, there's no need for that, Rocket obviously trusts Romney to never use the powers that Obama has demanded, and received or simply taken, to murder anyone he choses American or no, ( though I agreed with the terrorist supporters he has already ordered murdered in Africa ) or arrest and detain, take the property and labor from, in case of him declaring an emergency.

Such a trusting person, who has no fear that future president Palin will ever, ever, use such unconstitutional power, nor will president Hillary or Jeb Bush, whoever we end up with in 2016, or even sooner if Barry or Mitt is killed before then.

He trusts that the Prez, no matter the party or ideology, would ever seek to silence him. Silence Rush, sure, but never a real American.

It's all very well running around shouting that the sky is falling, & it may very well be doing just that in your part of the world, I have no clue as to the accuracy of any of this.

But I'm not seeing any sensible concrete proposals, are any of you standing for office to redress the problems you see?
There's lot's of slanging going on from both sides but both appear to me to be in earnest & equally as fervent.

The question that springs to my mind is, are you trying to put the brakes on an elite out of control? or trying to subvert your own lawfully elected administration? or are they both the same thing viewed from different perspectives?

Yes, by trying to educate my fellow Americans to the clear and present danger to our liberties at hand, thus hoping they will vote accordingly in our upcoming presidential election in November.

...or trying to subvert your own lawfully elected administration?

Speaking only for myself: No. I love my country, and want to see it continue - as our Founding Fathers intended and created - forever. Speaking out against perceived wrongdoings by our government is not the same as wishing harm upon our government. Our country wouldn't be here, i.e., we'd still be British subjects, if our Founding Father hadn't been fed up and spoken out.

I love my country. Anyone who tries to tell you that I don't, just because I speak out against perceived injustices by our current government, is, perhaps, still whacked out on prescription medications from their recent hospital stay.

Best,

Having as many candid discussions with others I come in contact with in order to sway their opinion and cause them to alter their voting patterns.

The ONE saving grace here in the US is that there IS a Second Amendment. History has told us that one of the foundational directives leading up to totalitarian rule is an unarmed citizenry.

Before this bill was passed, I spent a full year in opposition to it with my Representative, My Senator (Both of whom signed it - I bet neither of which read it) With my Insurance Commisioner, and the State Attorney AG office. Washington is one of the states that is Suing against the bill.... unfortunately - the current governor is all too excited about it. Our State AG is running for the position, he has my support, contribution, and endorsement.

Washington went through much of this legislation back in 96-98; it is one of the big reasons I LEFT insurance. The regulations were are, and for the foreseeable future strangling - without ANY improvement in patient quality, care, delivery, nor cost savings.
Fiscally - it is a BAD BILL.
Now fast forward to how both AIG, and the Housing Crash have occurred, and digging deeper on the financials on this ... As the EXCHANGES are set on the same UNFUNDED bundled activity (ie no determination of mitigation - everyone qualifies, with no cap on annual, nor life time expenses, with open sourced funding to RX/DME/MN as a CIVIL RIGHT.... it fails.) and it fails hard.
The medical sector is 1/6th of the economy... but the SOCIAL BENEFITS outpay is 1/3 the economy, surpassing Defense, and with the Baby Boomers set to retire in 7-10000 per DAY ) that number goes ballistic

It is the Weimer Republic, ready and set.

Reading the leaves, I figured we had until 2016-17 until it fails - and I figured that Obama would push a coup to keep in power past his second term (yep, because I see the new miserable continuing and him getting reelected - those on the government tit are all too happy to continue to keep sucking for today - without repercussions for tomorrow. )

He is at current aligning himself entirely too much with Kennedy and Lincoln and making the PPACA a 'human right' and a quaranteed civil liberty. He continues to push that, I don't feel we will need to worry about him further. History rhymes entirely too much.

None of my domestic friends see it coming, and they think I am a whack job
I like my chances overseas better - the reach of this thing is totally internal, totally domestic, and already in motion.

They DON'T NEED a gas chamber. All they need is a virus - remember the process of H1N1 ? Roush Pharma made a killing on that evolution..... Guess who has proprietary and EXCLUSIVE bid for H1N3 ?.... yep. We get another virus - they are BANKING on it.

October sounds nice for a launch.

PS McNeil Island -a previous isolated island and fortified state prison was turned over the Health Department Last year, they have since started construction on a helo pad.
ask your paranoid self
WHY does the HEALTH department need a prision.. on an island...and a new Helo capability ?.... Further ask yourself WHY there is an RFP for a CLASSIFIED at the TS Level position for Enrollment, Processing and Containment position at the Federal level for the new Officer Cadre ?

Your paranoia is about 3, mine bumps off the rev limiter at 11.
They are set and waiting to make that a flagship rollout for 'health' response.

PS, our unit conducted Domestic operations for processing, internment, and containment of citizens - its an annual exercise. has been since WTO. It is an activity that we have well performed abroad in Bosnia, Kosovo, Moldova, Herzegovina and Uzbekistan.

It comes.
PS I am the fly in the ointment at my local 'Transition Towns' too. They are not the happy happy joy joy thing they appear to be either. Read their own white paper. They are all about assessing fines, grabbing resources, and collecting assets during the fail.
The set Go word for their stupidity, is and has been 'Resilence' where ever you see it - it is up to no good, add to that Transition, and Sustainability.

I recently left a 16 year career in the insurance and financial services industry.

Between Obamacare and the new Financial Services legislation, the industry is headed for collapse.

On the health care front, I have witnessed since the signing dozens of small and mid-tier carriers leaving the health care market and sell their existing book of business to the mega-players who are currently choosing to remain in the market. These players are BCBS, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Aetna. Many others like Hartford, Principal, Humana, etc. have exited the healthcare market. Instead of "increasing choice and competition" Obamacare is destroying innovation and competition and consolidating all of the market within a few carriers.

The last time we saw this was with the Federal Flood Insurance programs. When the Federal goverment entered this market, most insurance was produced and backed by individual companies. When you bought a policy, you were buying a product produced and backed by that carrier. Now 100% of flood insurance is Federal Flood Insurance. You still buy from carriers, but these carriers are only face plates for Federal insurance. They are paid a fee for origination and paperwork processing, but they are not directly responsible for anything that happens afterward. The coverage you own is backed by the Federal Government.

The same is happening to the health care industry.

Like flood insurance, there is no market incentive to compete, to innovate, to improve. Market forces driving excellence is now being removed from health care.

The financial services market is under different pressures with the same result. Between shrinking profit margins, lower market investment opportunities, and higher regulations, players in the financial services market are blinking out.

Since my departure February 6th, Sunlife and Hartford Life have both exited the individual financial services market. They are no longer selling insurance, annuities, mutual funds, or retirement plans. These will not be the last carriers to leave the market. Additionally, insurance companies as well as investment firms are no longer hiring and training new advisors. The result will be that those who remain in the market, will have fewer and fewer opportunities to bring in new clients. They will be trimming their books from the bottom. If you don't already have several million of investment dollars, you will have a hard time finding financial investment advice.

UBS is a prime example of this. In January, they announced to my group that they would be paring their advisor group down to those who generate $1M of Gross Dealer Concessions (GDC) or more. If the average fee charged by advisors is 1%, their advisors will need to have a minimum book of $100,000,000 just to get in the door. Others are following this same example. If you aren't already in this market, you won't be entering this market as an advisor.

What am I doing now?

I am part of an IT acquisitions team with a healthcare company. Why? Well, if the market is creating hardships, there are assets available for sale.

Cheap.

We acquire rural and community hospitals who can't afford to compete given the new regulations for pennies on the dollar and streamline them so that they can be profitable. The greater the market disturbance in the health care arena, the greater the opportunities for acquisitions. My company has secured a $3B facility for acquitions.

If you can't beat them, join them. If the Federal Goverment is going to destroy health care, I might as well make some money from the destruction. The happiest guy watching Rome burn while Nero "fiddled" was the one supplying the violins.

Slick and I are coming to the same location from different directions.

It is exactly what happened in Washington state in 96-98. We lost 18 health carriers, and NO domiciled companies will sell an individual plan.
IF you want an individual plan, you have to find a company in Oregon or Idaho that has a recipricol agreement; or an OUT OF STATE company that has an office here, but maintains an HQ in another state. ....

(this is another reason that Boeing put its HQ in Chicago )
Washington has not had Pre Existing conditions to group policies since 98, we have had free 'wellness' care since 2000 to target 'disparate' populations, free womens health screening, required mammograms, and state mandated levels for PHSYC/MN services .....
Taking a look at our 'quality' with nearly 15 years of this legislation in play - we rank 44th by an external independent review board, and 41 by the states own account matrix of 'quality'.
Taking a look at our budget for expenditures based solely on health care .... we have run red on those programs EVERY YEAR, with escalating costs across the board..... so much for savings.

Its a bad bill.
I left the sales side of insurance - I make my money on compliance, audit, security and patient advocacy.
(PS have y'all signed your damn will ? power of attorney? done your determination of last rights and care determinations ?... don't want to talk about it ?!!? Pity - it's a new requirement of the law - IF you do not have one assigned.... one will be assigned for you .
Wanna bet who comes out ahead in that equation - hello IRS.

We have acquired a hospital in Yakima and will be looking for just this type of hospital.

Losing money. For sale for cheap.

Then we show up at your place for dinner.

Hey, you're all welcome anytime, give me a little warning if you can, so I can buy more sausages though.

I have put forth a petition to the State AG and the OIC of Washington , that IF the carrier entity is not located OCONUS, would the bill still apply ?
One has responded with I don't know but I can't prove it
the other is having lawyers look at it.
BECAUSE IF you domicile off CONUS ie

Then you can sell back into the US as a 'Tourist / Travel' carrier, and be exempt from this federal farcus.

Which is what Pacific Blue does. I do a bit of consulting for them, because they have no f'n clue what our doctors and hospitals are up to when a Canadian gets care here at an emergency level.
(they had been blind paying the bills at a discount flat rate per instance... yoosht the silliness of that - comical)

...trying to put the brakes on an elite out of control?

Beautifully phrased. Yes. That's it.
I'd add that it's mostly a self appointed elite.

Do you recall the old Marx quote?
I sent the club a wire stating, "PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT PEOPLE LIKE ME AS A MEMBER".

That was, of course, the funny Marx, not the one whose idiocies have led to the murder of hundreds of millions of people.

Well, these "elites" really don't want anyone to join. ( that's pretty bi-partisan in NY, btw. You don't get in unless the power people let you. ) They know better than you do, and are willing to impose their will by any means necessary.

One trouble with any form of government is that it is impossible for the President, or even a Senator to know more than his people. Barry may have a pretty good handle on convincing people how smart he is, but he doesn't know transmission shops, or bakeries, or oil drilling.... at all. He's never worked a real job for a company that had to make a profit, and he had to actually do something about keeping the company in business. ( While I've never been a CEO, I have had to worry about that )

Increasingly, the politicians that want the power, perks and money are from a smaller and smaller slice of America, and increasingly they have less and less real world experience in reality past the level of Prom Queen on Steroids.

The Founders wanted citizens to contribute their talent, and then return to the farm or business. They did not want a House of Lords.

And rumblings of joint task force with Russian Spetznaz - but I cannot confirm that, should be a very interesting summer.

It comes.
