It's fun doing an interview with a new boss who is walking you through the hallway to "introduce" you to people when the secretaries are coming out to give you hugs. That was good for some laughs.
I tell people that the Aerospace/Defense business has to be viewed as migrant labor. I've never burned bridges and am still in touch with former employers and co-workers from back in the 1970s (http://www.donedmunds.com).
Hey, if your heading to Scaled Composites, that's an awesome place to work if you're into aircraft. Burt Rutan is a brilliant guy. Would like to see that place up close sometime.
Yeah, it's like old home week. I've known some of them for about 30 years now.
First met Burt before the original VariEZ. We were on the airport when they were filming Death Race 2000 (Vari Viggen about 0:43)
And of course, the equally forgettable "Bad Guy" in ACES: Iron Eagle III (the Ares attack jet was painted with flat black removable paint for the movie)
We had a private screening before the film opened here in Lancaster. TERRIBLY TACKY MOVIE! (would go well with copious beers today however)
Years ago we were riding motorcycles in the desert between Cal City and Ridgecrest when a plane just skimming the deck comes out of nowhere and dang near took our heads off (seemed that way anyway). We ran into Burt later that weekend and told him the story, not knowing it was him at the controls. His reply was "That was you guys?"
Aw bummer, man. Too bad. No, wait ... Cool! I mean, wow what a new deal!!! You'll have to rent Office Space, nyuk nyuk.
So if you'll still be working with carbon fiber, composites & such, that's awesome. Speaking of which, Hitco (around the corner and down the street, I might add) has recently expanded and modernized their facility. Business must be booming!
Y'know - one TOTALLY COOL Thing is that they ENCOURAGE after hours personal projects in related "stuff"
First thing is to repair my bodywork after my low-side 3 weeks ago at Willow.
I asked about "G-Jobs" and they laughed and pointed at the grinding booth and one of the technicians had a jet-ski upside down, doing hull repair after a woopsie against some rocks.
Final walk-through today. Amazing the STUFF you find after 15 years. STUFF, Mike - I hear you. In one sense though, you just made a BIG change! I'm just going back to pick up where I left off 15 years ago.
Today is about finding the last bits of Data, reports, correspondence ARRRGGGGH. Had almost 4 months to get ready.
3 good bye lunches this week - a good bye dinner tonight, another lunch next week after my division manager gets back from his fishing vacation in Alaska this week.
>>>More folks should make more life changes. Keeps them sharp, keeps the paycheck-writers off balance.
Ditto . . I may not be far behind you. Two offers this week has the entrepreneurial juices flowing . . I was my ass back on the line, not in the bleachers.
Steve, Congrats on the new gig! I've always though SC was a top notch company, right out on the front edge of everything cool. I've thought of Burt as "da man" for many years. Cut from the same bolt as Erik. Think outside the box, make it work and get it done. We need more of those these days.
Yes, I'm in the slums on the east end of Rosamond, work at BAE Systems at airport. (you know John and Cindy R.?)Hopefully will be attending the AHRMA event at Willow Springs, always good entertainment.
HELL YEAH I know John and Cindy! Man, once I get my ass through all the paper-signing and stuff, we gotta do lunch. Look for the orange/black S3, blue 4-door F150 or the ratty black Saturn SC1. The mornings might be a little chilly for me to ride up from Lancaster. Probably be driving the sh!tbox Saturn for the first couple weeks.
