>>> I'm not sure that they really tell much of the story about adding a transmission to an electric though.

They absolutely do. Put comparable gearboxes and clutches on the e-bikes any they may even beat their ICE challengers.

Totally agree on consumer led tech development. FMJ mentioned an e-bike already slated to include a gearbox I think. Thanks for that Fire Man. I did see it.

As e-bikes emerge onto the market, they will surely turn to some type of variable ration drivetrain. It would be neat if they could figure a way to achieve a direct drive for top gear though to avoid the parasitic losses of a conventional gearbox.

Ok, it's a hell of a lot harder to find scooter information than motorcycle info, but I since you made the snazzy charts, I found this to add:

Vespa 250 GTS
15.9 HP
332.9 LB
0-60 @ 12.9 Sec

Honda SH150i
15.56 HP
300 LB
0-60 @ 13.2 Sec

Doh! I was comparing the 0-60 times for the E-bike against the 1/4 mile time of the ICE bike.

OK, reading it right, that's more like what I was expecting...

I'd think a CVT type of tranny with adjustable pulleys would work great with an electric motor. You'd get gear reduction for starting and automatically adjustable ratio changes to the top speed - and no need for a clutch lever or to prove how manly one can (or cannot ) shift.

Someone may have already pointed this out, but, I believe by definition, that's a scooter and not a motorcycle. A step-over design for sure, but if you have the motor mounted on the rear wheel, well, that's kinda' the defining trait of a scoot.

Funny, I was just scoping out the new 2012 Zero S earlier today.

Zero SO could have done that better. Looks like, "ok, it done" Um...how about a seat???... OH!!! Yeah!!! A Seat. Lets put this thing we have laying around on it.

I would love to have one if it was just...different....like not as tall as my armpits at the seat.

Swordsman... my scooter has a mid-mounted engine, it's not on the rear wheel but it is definitely a scooter.

Really? What kind of scoot is it? One of those California Scooter jobs that look like minibikes?

Fast, I didn't like the ZEROs at first, but for some reason, the design has really grown on me. I think the whole minimalist thing is intentional, a way to set it apart from gas powered bikes and save weight at the same time. From what I've experienced personally, a good flat seat is the best for all-round utility. Gives you plenty of room for whatever kind of riding you may be doing, and fits a larger range of rider heights.

Ha, that thing looks like the queen from Alien. I guess I'm not surprised maxi scooters are mid-engine, given their larger displacement. Just never thought about it.

A lot of the ride reviews of the TMAX say that it is a sportbike disguised as a scooter.

Back on topic: It looks like Brammo is FINALLY coming out with the Empulse models (a year late). And (for Blake's sake), they'll come with a "six speed transmission." http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/brammo-dirt-b ike-integrated-electronic-transmission/

(I must stop thinking about the Brammo Supermoto... please don't let it have a 100 mile range on a charge... just make it stop haunting me....)

From request for more info from Brammo:

quote:

The Engage is a prototype that will now be readied for production. Once we have signed off on production specification and tested that prototype, we will announce the specifications and expected delivery dates.

Thank you for your interest and patience.

Did you see the teaser video? It passes the "will it wheelie" test. : )

Dang that could be a fun commuter. Keep the Uly for touring, hauling, and two up. Use the Brammo for my daily work commute (45 miles round trip).

Empulse....

WANT. BAD.

Gawwd I'd love to do Deal's Gap on that thing! It'd almost be capable of the Cherohala/Dragon loop!

Just set it up with belt drive, and I'm in!
