With all the recent threads regarding things religious, I found myself wondering if anyone else here had any experience with teaching Sunday school.
Yup.
I am a Sunday school teacher as of two weeks ago and am always on the hunt for lesson ideas. I'm involved with kids around 5 years old.
Any helpful thoughts, ideas or advice will be very much appreciated.

Good on ya, Dan!

If you want, I can put you in touch with my sis, who's a chaplain and a recent PhD of Ministry- and kinda nutty like her brudder.

PM me for her email...

My first solo last week was fun. The lesson was John 14:6. I used this

as an object lesson/ craft kinda thing. I substituted "special" for "magic".
It went very well but how to top it?

I taught 12 to 20 for about 15 years. I'm the sound man now.

Pray about everything. Don't teach without a prayer life. Always show Christ's love.
Keep it simple and fun. The under 12 crowd is a very rewarding group. Easier to keep a teenagers attention. In the last few years I taught, my wife joined me in the classroom. What great fun we had tag teaming the teens.

Check out "WordAflame.org". I used their material from time to time. The Power Hour program can be really neat. I visited a church that was heavy into it.

Attend teaching seminars.

Remember; the students will sometimes teach you more than you wanted to learn. If anything comes up, discuss it with the pastor and let him handle it. Avoid the appearance of evil. You are called to a higher level of accountability.

Some of my students went into the ministry and some went to jail. I still love them all. Try to do right in God's eyes. You can't win them all but that wont stop you from trying. Bless you. And PRAY!

Have a sense of humor.
My experience was autrocious - not my fault that the teacher did not find my Santa / Jesus juxtaposition enlightening. so much for religious 'freedom'

Sunday school.... my first inclination that church/religion and I do not belong together.

5 was a formative year for me. My first whiskey, cigar, gun, motorcycle and visit to the principal's office .... funny how that set the bar for the rest of the years to come.

Brian, Sorry to hear that. My God has a sense of humor. I sometimes talk about the Satan Clause. I figure that you brought out the santa lie vs. just believe in this one instead? As a student I asked, Is god so powerful that he can make a rock so big that he can't move it.

Stress that it is not about being religious, it is about having a relationship with God.

A good rule of thumb is that for each year old a child is will give you one minute of attention span. So, with a 5 year old you have 5 minutes to get the point across.

Interesting that you mentioned that. It's exactly what I've been currently working on!

Thank you sir. This is some of the best wisdom I have heard on the subject. You said a lot in little space. Thanks again.

Hey PanDan- sis said she'd sentcha an email. She's currently on a short vacation in OK, so she'll be more likely to have input next week when she's home.

Happy and Blessed Good Friday to you all, and a Gospel (yes, Good News) filled Easter...

This pretty much sums it up for me-

I hated Sunday school as a child.

I hated history class and social studies class too.

It's been rewarding to learn and appreciate such subject matter as an adult.

I hated history until my mum started dragging me off to places that I'd actually learned about. that put things in perspective for me & gave me an interest.

Maths was the same until I started learning about using it in an engineering setting.

Religion however has become less & less interesting the more I learn of it.
