2000 Nissan Frontier. Radiator cracked & boiled over for c 5 miles (it made it home) Replaced radiator. Refilled w/antifreeze & water. Net result. Truck runs w/o incident. However, the temp gauge on the dash is pegged on "H". I ran it 15 miles today. Mixed traffic. Stops & starts & up to 75 MPH. Everything is working fine except the temp' gauge. Could a boiling radiator mess up the temp probe? |

It's easy and cheap enough to change out the temp sensor and find out. |

Agreed: However, I am not a mechanic & I don't want to keep throwing $$$ at the problem, especially if it is not a problem. I am happy to run w/o a working gauge. I just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar. Chris C |

"I am happy to run w/o a working gauge" Chris,is this the same thinking you used in the mountains, when you decided to ride in the ditch?

Chris have you belted the dash? Needle doesn't get that far usually & I've known them stick. When in doubt.........Give it a clout! Are you sure the sender unit wire is on properly? check to make sure it's not grounded anywhere. If you're still scratching your head over it next week, I could pop over & take a look. If you don't mind picking up my travel expenses that is. |

its easy enough to test the sensor. First, you have to find it, then simply remove the attached wire. They gauge will either move when you remove the wire, or it will move when you ground the wire. If it does nothing for either test, the gauge is bad. if it moves for one of the tests, your sensor is bad... |

I remember riding into a ditch. I don't think I did any riding after I entered it! I took the dash apart to see if the wiring there was intact (it was) but I ran out of daylight before I could locate & pull the sensor. Next week is not good for me. (unless my lottery #'s come up) I have to take a college entrance exam today, so I will try the sensor test tomorrow. If I don't find a solution I'll just run it & see if it explodes at some point! Thanks for the suggestions. Chris C |

Any air pockets? Bleed out the cooling system? An air pocket could make it run hot... Thermostat could be stuck partially closed. Is there a huge difference in the temperatures between the upper or lower radiator hoses? |

I bled the system & then drove it for an hour in stop & go traffic. No negative response from the engine/radiator. At the end of the drive I could put my hand on the radiator & not burn it. I did the electrical test Bartimus suggested & it appears to be a faulty sensor. As it's not causing any problems I will just drive it for now & change out the sensor when I can be bothered. Thanks to all for the suggestions. Chris C |

overheat issues tend to cause things like head gasket failures. I would not drive this without a functioning water temp monitoring system, because you could indeed be having problems. Kilroy |
