You do not just walk across the border in Ukraine. They are very stringent with their border control; you overstay your visa and it gets to prison quickly. Hell, they just put their previous Prime Minister in jail for embezzlement and governmental fraud (with which I happen to agree with)

If you do not have legitimate job in Ukraine, you cannot stay beyond ninety days.
And they do not have the marry for citizenship rings we have here.
You can also not come in as a tourist without proof of return trip ticket back out of Ukraine.

Things that if they were adopted here - we would be a different country.

(and alot of my service buddies are not in Ukraine, but they have fled the US to other locations, Asia and South America : it is indeed coming - whether you believe it or not , is on you)

If you have such well funded friends, why aren't they helping you get there?
Why aren't they providing you with the much needed job that keeps you here?

...paranoid cold war relics mouthing off all the time about the sky is falling?

There were many who believed that GWB wanted a uber-christian theocracy..... with zero evidence, and now with hindsight, zero reality.

When the Attorney General is complicit in gun sales to gang/terrorist groups on our border for the propaganda purpose of passing unconstitutional laws..... and people die, from both countries....

The President's best buddies and mentors all have roots in the marxist faith, and he appoints proud Communist Revolutionaries to his staff... Folk who think Mao is the greatest philosopher. ( and forget he's the greatest mass murderer in all of history.... )

But let's say, just for arguments sake, that Barry's love of the Constitution is just as good as George's was. The Patriot act? The assertion that the Prez has the power to order the murder of anyone, anywhere... ( but presumably not for sport... )

http://patriotpost.us/opinion/george-will/2012/03/ 11/those-pesky-things-called-laws

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.......

Us paranoid cold war relics might just remember the Premier of the USSR promising to bury us, and bragging of the warheads aimed at our homes...... relics might remember how many died in the ongoing Revolution as the Soviets rolled over nation after nation, ( any Hungarians here? ) and spread mass death throughout the planet... ( any Cambodians here? Burmese? )

Macbuell, depending on the price and your budget, you can step up a grade on the AR15. The Sport is good, but it does away with the dust cover and forward assist (no biggies...), but also the chrome lined barrel. And... probably a softer bolt. I would find the next least expensive AR witha chrome lined bore.

For what it's worth, I believe the M&P Sport barrel was tested by S&W to 170,000 rounds with no appreciable wear. It's a good gun, but when it comes to tires, brakes, and self-defense, I buy the best I can afford.

I'm in the market for an AR over the summer most likely. I saw a site recently with 500 round boxes of Wolf steel case for $100/box.

Depending on the AR, Wolf steel case can be a jam-o-matic problem. It's a bit idiosyncratic, one will eat them without hiccup, the other will make you swear.

Chromed bolts and bores are, generally good, for longevity and function, but again, nothing is perfect, and accuracy may or may not suffer. I've seen stock, milspec barrels shoot as good as you could ask, sub-moa groups all day long, and custom, high dollar ones that are, eh.

Also there is the matter that AR's like all guns, can be picky about ammo. ( IMHO most guns are, to some extent. The rare ones can eat anything you feed them good )

Partly it's rifling twist, and chamber lead, and how smooth a bullet feeds, but partly it's just black magic. The only way to tell that YOUR rifle loves Remington 55gr. soft points and hates Federal 55gr. FMJ, is to go practice with all the different ammo you can readily buy..

Rule of thumb, ( not carved in stone, but readable on the wax tablets ) is that the heavier ( and longer ) bullets need a faster twist. 8-1 should stabilize 77gr. bullets ( of regular construction ) while 9-1 68gr and shorter. All copper bullets sold in Condor country or the Peoples State of CA, are longer for mass and usually need a faster twist.... all other things being equal. Sometimes. Probably. Sorta. ( for precision machines, there is a lot of grey area )

IMHO the best thing you can do for accuracy is free float the barrel. On a classic bolt action, that requires hand work on the wood or plastic stock, and you might end up worse. On an AR, you just mount up a floating forend. You can get "cheater" forends that are "National Match" types that look stock, or go for a wide variety from carbon or aluminum tubes to 6 rail accessory mounts suitable to hold lasers, lights, IR beacons, satnav, cupholders.......... Your choice. ( just think about walking through brush with it, first )

I already put my down payment on the M&P15 Sport. I did a ton of research in various forms and nothing I have read anywhere has said anything negative about the M&P15 Sport and almost everyone agrees you don't need or miss the Forward Assist or the dust cover. I'm happy with my choice ... now I just can't wait for the thing to show up. Apparently I am not the only one who thinks the M&P15 Sport is a sound purchase for the money.

If I have any complaint on the AR platform it's the handle that you work the action with. It's kinda kookie. It leaves an opening where hot gases spray you in the face, it is more complicated than it needs to be, and it does not let you control the closing of the bolt with finesse.

The Forward Assist is an example of dumb engineering. It exists because the operating handle doesn't let you push the bolt closed. ( see rant in para above )

As a rule, if the cartridge won't go in with normal force, slamming it in is probably a real dumb idea.

When the M-16 was designed, it used a clean burning powder, and was adopted by US Air Force guards ( Curtis Lemay was impressed with it's ability to demolish watermelons, it was cool looking, it was modern, and light. ) who usually didn't have to keep their weapons under their cot in a tent in the jungle. ( until Vietnam )

When the Army bought into the M-16 they changed to an older, dirty powder, and issued the M-16 to troops without cleaning kits. The Forward assist was useful to troops with a filthy gun, as an alternative to fixing bayonets, or just dying. It took a while but better powder, chrome bores, forward assists, dust covers, etc. gave us a pretty reliable gun. Later versions gave us better sights, a longer stock ( more suitable for prone target shooting... not so much for standing. ) round forends, ( from the "sexy" Commando Colts ) then length adjustable stocks, etc. etc.

So the forward assist is just more to go wrong. If it jams, work the action like every breech loader since the Ferguson or Sharps. The "tap, rack, bang" drill in it's various forms ( depending on the action of the weapon ) is a better idea than jamming your gun, solid, with a bad cartridge IMHO.

Others complain about the gas action on the AR. A fortune in "piston guns" mostly based on the old AK or SKS action is in production and on the drawing boards.

I think, mostly, it's a waste of money, but, that said, some work fine, and , yes, the inside of the receiver is cleaner. But! mostly it hurts accuracy, masses more, adds complexity, and costs money. And, often works like crap.

You want to spend $2-3000$ for a Sig, fine. Enjoy. Cleaning after use isn't that bad, and gives you a chance to inspect the innards.

The M&P15 sport is not a bad choice. I might chose different, but that's why they make them in different flavors. Let us know how you like it.

You have to realize $$ was a key consideration when making my choice. I will not be using this for law enforcement or anything like that. Mostly it will only be used for plinking and, heaven forbid, home defense. So spending thousands on a rifle was just not a realistic option. In the end, It came down to this AR or the Ruger Mini-14 and I chose the AR because most reviews it was a better shooting, more accurate rifle than the Mini-14 and it was also cheaper.

Certainly I could have gotten a better rifle but I was not prepared to spend 30%+ more for features that I didn't think I would need.

The AR is a good "Doomsday" weapon. Lots of ammo, lots of mags, lots of parts.

It may not be my favorite, but you really can't go wrong having one.

you get what you pay for, esp in firearms. ak's and the nagant are pieces of crap. i'm sorry but i've shot them. i've seen the mighty ak fail. and when they run (which they usually do) they're not very accurate. the sights are junk on both. seriously, a bolt action ww2 rifle?? yeah that's fun for about a day. and the 762x54 round is not an ideal round for plinking.

an ar will run circles around those things! sorry reep i know you keep recommending the nagant. but bang for the buck i've had WAY more fun shooting a highpoint carbine than either of those. lol

I had a nice under folder Romanian G kit rifle I built and a Robinson arms xcr in .556 that was very nice. However, I quickly sold them both when I bought a SCAR. Its a great rifle with better ergos IMO than most everything else. It does have weaknesses though like expense and parts availability. I'll always love AR's and other black rifles but my scar is tits!

Well, I got the M&P15 Sport and a 1000 rounds of ammo for what a lot of people pay for just an entry level AR.

By the way, I did consider the AK. I could have gotten a Saiga for about $400 but they aren't very accurate so it wasn't really was what I was looking for.

Well, to be fair, I think I was saying more that "absolute best bang for the buck" may not be your best strategy. Maybe "good bang for the buck" would be a better approach. : )

I've never had a Mosin fail to fire. I've had to beat the bolt open when it overheated though. : )

Actually, I'd probably pick a Sweedish Mauser first, like an M96 or an M38. Ammo isn't as cheap, but you can reload and keep it affordable.

And it gets better from there...

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=A76254 R&name=Russian+7.62x54R+147grn+FMJ+440rd+Can&group id=40

$77 for a 440 round can of ammo.

The Mosin sucks in every regard for sure... but it will go bang, will hit within 8 inches at 100 yards, and its so cheap that everyone should have one (and a can of ammo) anyway.

$89 for the gun, $77 for 440 rounds of ammo, $166 total. : )

But I'd splurge and get this one instead for $219...

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?groupid=569 &name=Czech+CZ-82+9x18+Makarov+Pistol

Sigh. So little money, so many cool crappy guns and cool crappy motorcycles... : )

Don't the higher end Smith & Wesson ARs use chrome jiblets?

I agree on the fact that the AR is a great SHTF gun for the USA because EVERY police car carries one or a shotgun, the military uses them, very popular aftermarket, plus the gun can multitask with different uppers. I want an AR57...

AR57? New one. cool. However, I'd rather have the PS90, mostly because I'm a "Stargate" fan. The 5.7 round is a touch.... lite. Good for the intended purpose, as a personal defense weapon for not-front-line troops, which in an era of terrorism and jihad, "front line" is no longer a valid description. I'd put it, "on patrol" and "waiting for the suicide bomber, while I do my job".

The 5.7 round in a P90 is like the old M1 Carbine. Most people can't hit Sh&^ with a handgun, and to have a Garand/Springfield/M-16 handy is an inconvenience to the cooks and cannon cockers who have their hands full doing their day jobs. Same for Truck drivers, tankers, clerks, etc. Odds are a Baretta is the wrong choice for them, but they need a short handy weapon that will save lives. Back in 1941, that was the Carbine, in 2012, it's the M4 ( M-16 carbine ) or, FN hoped, the P90. ( the PS90 is the longer, legal barrel length semi version of the "Stargate" favorite anti alien gun.)

As a Doomsday weapon, the AR57 is not my choice. The 5.56 round has more reach, is far more available, cheaper, and it is a round you can pick up from, let us just say, deceased UN troops after the Zombies have over run them.

As a fun weapon, I bet it rocks.

I'm not mocking your choice on the M&P Sport. It IS a better, more accurate gun than the old, ( and now updated ) Ruger Mini-14. Not as good a choice for a truck gun on medium range coyotes, simply because the Ruger is built like a tank, but that is not your need. Mine was for a target rifle capable of 200+ yd. single hole groups, useful on coyote and rodents. ( we got both pests locally. for Bear, an AR is a horrible choice. )

The SCAR is pretty awesome, as are some of the other intended replacements for the M-16 in military use. But, with the costs of the ongoing war on western civ., it looks like the M4 and M-16 variants will be with us for decades.

The Nagant and it's carbine 1938/44 version is fun, ( the long, original one kicks less, and is not as bone shockingly loud as the carbine, which makes it still a heavy hard kicking battle rifle. ) and like SOME other relics of the first part of the last century, still a powerful deadly weapon. I'm also a fan of the Lee-Enfield, the Springfield, the K98 Mauser, the US 1917 Enfield, and the M1 Garand. And variants thereof.

Note that All the bolt actions were developed not last century, but near the end of the century before that.

But a SKS, albeit with less ranging ability, has far more rapid firepower....

and the AK is THE standard for guns given to illiterate savages to kill their neighboring tribes, with no more cleaning kit than a shoelace and some diesel.

Accuracy on an AK varies from eh to crap, but it was never intended as a sniper rifle. The AK was intended for mass assaults by guys in APC's and trucks shooting from a moving vehicle at folk about 100 yards away, full auto. It does that very good.

There is a slow mo vid on the net from discovery channel of an M-16 and an AK47 firing full auto. The M-16 moves back and forth with solid purpose. The AK wriggles like a snake, flexing at multiple points and spraying like a fire hose in the hands of a toddler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhZmnTCcxe4

While I agree that having AP ammo restricted is bogus, the polymer tipped stuff will do the job on zombies just fine. Neither will slow up a tank.

As far as I know, you can reload the 5.7 with FMJ legally. You cannot buy or sell it however.

Also, the 5.7 is supposedly VERY difficult to reload properly.

I love my 5.7 Pistol

so anyhoo a rattle battle is pretty much "engaging" steel targets from 100, 150,200 & 250. usually two hits on each before moving on to the next. one reload for a total round count of 40 per. and it's timed. $10 a round, go as many times as you want. pm me if you wanna give it a try. it's just good people havin fun.
