Some buddies and I are planning a circle tour of Lake Superior this summer. We're planning on doing almost as much hiking on this trip as riding so I'll be leaving my bike and soft side luggage unattended in parking lots for a few hours at a time.

All I've got for luggage for my M2 is the soft side Cortech sport system. Any suggestions for securing, i.e. theft prevention, for my stuff?

I take mine off and hide them in the woods. Just remember where you hide them.

I've done it plenty, often times just a duffel bag bungeed to the seat. I'll take anything of real value with me. I won't be happy if they steal my dirty undies, but neither will they. Adding locks to soft luggage give the impression of value inside that can be gotten to with a knife or razor possibly doing more damage than the value of what they are trying to steal.

A buddy of mine uses this (or one like it). He has 3 panniers and throws this in his waterproof camping bag that he straps to the seat. No one has activated it yet.

A lot of ADV world tourers say the best way to keep enquiring minds out of their stuff is to use a bike cover.
Myself, I have been very fortunate to have never had anything pilfered whether it has been overnights, parked for meals or at parks while out and about.

I don't think you have much to worry about in that part of the world honestly.

Ditto, don't leave anything of value in the bags, & try & leave your bike where there's some sort of surveillance, security camera or in view of a store etc.

On the technical side, to secure soft luggage to my M2, I shoved a couple of sections of 30mm waste pipe about a foot long onto the rear footpegs to strap against so the bags don't flap or swing under the bodywork.
Just forced on over the rubber, then fold them upright.
Not the prettiest thing you ever saw but very effective, I rode to the Isle of Man, & nothing moved.

that's a cool idea Grumpy. and as far as looks go, a little paint to match the frame would help hide the pipe.

By waste pipe, do you mean that poly vinyl chloride (PVC) pipe?

That's the stuff,
I honestly can't remember the exact dimensions & I can't find the pics.

I never bothered to paint as you can't see them on my M2 with the Oxford Sports throwovers.

When you take the bags off you just fold down the peg & heave off the pipe.

I also put a soft cloth between the bodywork & the straps to prevent chafing the paint.

Bit of a game getting the seat screw in, but BF&I (brute force & ignorance) prevailed.
