quote:

In a sign of the nervousness surrounding Mr. Panetta’s trip, the Marines and other troops who were waiting in a tent for the defense secretary to speak were abruptly asked by their commander to get up, place their weapons — M-16 and M-4 automatic rifles and 9-mm pistols — outside the tent and then return unarmed. The commander, Sgt. Maj. Brandon Hall, told reporters he was acting on orders from superiors.

“All I know is, I was told to get the weapons out,” he said. Asked why, he replied, “Somebody got itchy, that’s all I’ve got to say. Somebody got itchy; we just adjust.”

Normally, American forces in Afghanistan keep their weapons with them when the defense secretary visits and speaks to them. The Afghans in the tent waiting for Mr. Panetta were not armed to begin with, as is typical.

Later, American officials said that the top commander in Helmand, Maj. Gen. Mark Gurganus, had decided on Tuesday that no one would be armed while Mr. Panetta spoke to them, but the word did not reach those in charge in the tent until shortly before Mr. Panetta was due to arrive.

General Gurganus told reporters later that he wanted a consistent policy for everyone in the tent. “You’ve got one of the most important people in the world in the room,” he said. He insisted that his decision had nothing to do with the shooting on Sunday. “This is not a big deal,” he said.

Sure seems like a big deal to me. I can't imagine what the Marines must have thought, to be ordered to disarm at the last minute like that. What message does this send to our troops?

This is the same Leon Panetta who, in essence, just told Senator Sessions and the Congress (and the Constitution) to eff off about who's actually in charge these days.

Maybe this isn't a big deal, but it sure smells ominous to me. We shall see.

Thanks for the scoop, Oldog.

"you've got one of the most important people in the World in the room"

Meh....... I'd say one Marine is worth 2 or 3 politicians.

Panetta doesnt put his pants on any different than those Marines

Or maybe he's already using those new powers from the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011

Just in: Can you believe the shite people do?

http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/vets-angry-ove r-american-flag-featuring-obama/nLR5Q/#comments

At the end of the video the reporter states the woman in charge said all they needed to do was call the office and it would have been handled. Lies! If the vets wouldn't have showed up the flag would still be flying. Now you folks understand how poisonous the Democratic party is and why they disarm our soldiers when the big-wigs visit them. : )

America, it's time to admit who, and what, we're dealing with here; it's not too late...

God bless our Veterans.

I agree. If it was a room full of marines, Panetta was perhaps the only expendable person in there.

I don't see the big deal.

Tensions were high. the 16 Afghans were disarmed so one couldn't take a shot at the high ranking official.

The 200 were disarmed to ease tension.

Whats the worst that can happen? the 16 unarmed Afghans rise up at one against 200 of Americas best?

Yeah I'm sure that that would have ended well for the 16....

You all need to stop grasping at straws. Although i wouldn't ditch your uber cool tin foil hats just yet.

To me, once you put a group of United States Marines in a combat zone, you should have an extremely good reason to order them to separate from their weapon. As a matter of common sense, and as a matter of respect for the men and the mission.

I don't see any way to not see it as "you were disarmed because we don't trust you to be able to maintain control of your weapon in keeping with the mission".

I was never in the service, so maybe there are lots of situations where it's mandatory to disarm, so maybe I'm wrong. As a citizen though, from what I understand, I'm offended that an elite force would be ordered to disarm.

Not my personal experience, but I was at the VFW pancake breakfast last weekend and some of the guys were joking about how you never went ANYWHERE without your weapon, including the latrine.

Unarmed soldiers in a war zone is a huge security risk.

worried about bullets in a combat zone?

stay home and video conference in your rhetoric. Hell look at all the gas and money you save too.

If they can get the Marines to disarm .... the step to getting the public unarmed is already in someones in box as a memo.
