A couple of months ago I asked for some input on hiring a returning veteran. Here’s how it turned out. First, the govt is absolutely no help at all. All I could find was an agency that wanted to help me post a “help wanted” ad on my website. Well, unless a vet stumbled across my site how would he know we were looking? Another place (non-govt) wanted to post the ad on their website which charges the vets for the leads. Maybe I’m not that proficient at accessing govt agencies but they sure don’t make the process easy.

At the time, I had a few hot irons in the fire that eventually cooled so I put things on the back burner. Things are picking up again so I simply placed an ad on Craigslist titled "Vet Preferred" (I don’t know if that’s discriminatory) and received several replies from non-vets but two from vets that stood out.

The first candidate is a former marine in his late 20’s who between 2004 and 2007 had 3 deployments to Iraq. He led a squad of 13 marines and was in charge of $8 million worth of equipment (I find the fact that he even mentioned the value remarkable as most employees have no idea or even care what stuff costs). We talked awhile and I asked him how he would feel about going from a leader of 13 men to starting at the bottom rung. His reply was simply “Improvise, adapt & overcome”. I remember thinking “Holy crap, in 5 years I’ll be working for this guy!”

The second is Army who spent 4 years in Fort Bragg. He left only to be home to take care of his daughter. At 6’3” & 245 he ought to be up to the task. Both candidates talked about how they enjoyed being part of a team, were polite – yes, sir & no, sir- well spoken and show tons of promise. Hopefully this is one of the better business decisions I have made in a while.

We need more people like you!

I could go into a long story about when I got out.... and thought the market was full of people like you looking to hire someone like me.... Reality is a bitch!

Keep up the good work

Thanks for trying to hire a vet!

The "trick" about quoting a dollar figure is given out in TAP class (transition assistance program.)
When I was looking I had something along the lines of "responsible for maintaining 10 million worth of avionics equipment"
