Because my boss is awesome, I'll be in the Bahamas at the Atlantis resort between Feb. 23 and 27.

I've never been anywhere like this before and I'm open to suggestions. What shouldn't I miss out on? Swimming with the dolphins seems like it would be cool, but the place looks overwhelming...

Also, we're hiring for car guys/technicians near Cleveland, OH. Feel free to send me resumes via PM.

I am not sure about Atlantis, but the Bahamas in general have some awesome scuba diving. If you are not into that, there are some nice beaches.

One word of warning if you are driving...they drive on the wrong side of the street down there.

No driving. I had considered renting a motorcycle until I read about the roads in Nassau, wrong way driving, etc.

Apparently the Buell can't be checked...

Apparently the Buell can't be checked...

That would be one heck of an oversize bag fee

You see a lot of scooter rentals, but the roads (and the islands) are small... not much space to do much with a moto. More just a means of transportation there.

If you go to a beach, leave your valuables in your room. Take bare minimum cash with you for drinks etc.

One of my employees went there and had his cell and about $250 stolen from under his beach towel while they were in the water.

Most of all HAVE FUN! The aquarium is pretty cool! (although a little pricey to get in)

You will be automatically charged a gratuity on your checks everywhere you go to eat / drink. Don't feel the need to add anything to your checks, as is customary here, they are taking their tip money from you already. This goes for all of New Providence, not just Atlantis (all of the Bahamas for that matter)

Go charter fishing.First check out the catches in the afternoon when the boats come in.If they are catching then book a boat. That's what I would do but I am biased to the working fisherman.

We are planning on a 4 hour charter, not 100% though.

Atlantis is a really big beach resort. Take your time and walk where ever you can. We went there while on a cruise ship. We spent most of a day walking around the resort and the shops of the surrounding town. If you know what you are doing with it, and like to barter, it can be a great place to buy jewelery for a special occasion because it will be made differently than the standard stuff in the States.

I saw a guy rent a scooter and got hit by a taxi just as he was pulling out of the rental parking lot(taxi's fault(idiot went on the sidewalk to hit him)). Insurances don't work well there. He had to pay cash for medical and had to be flown back the the US, they would not let him back on the cruise ship with a fresh set of stitches.

There is para sailing, all kinds of boat rides, the wife had her hair braided, the beaches are nice. There are casino games there. The under water tunnel is cool. Umbrella drinks are great. Scuba and snorkeling there is some of the best in the World.

Take a new wallet with only what you need for ID, cash and cards(less risk of loosing that irreplaceable old stuff you forgot was in there). If you are surrounded by little kids put your hands in your pockets before they do. Take a lesser camera and keep it tethered around your neck so that you are not temped to set it down.

Have a great time.

I bought a big skinny wallet just for the trip, my big fat leather wallet was taking it's toll. Snorkeling is on my list. I'll be taking an older point and shoot.

I've heard lots of horror stories about the scooter rentals(ie, no maintenance requirements, bad insurance, etc.) I rented one in North Carolina and had a blast, but I know the laws in the US.

If it's the only thing you take with you, take waterproof sunscreen. The intensity of the sun that far south is amazing.

I recommend SPF 10,000.

On trips I carry cash in a pouch on a neck strap under my shirt. The type you carry a fishing license in. +1 on walking.

And barter HARD if you choose to. If they show you a bracelet and are asking for US$160, you can likely buy it for $15. When we were in Cancun, this exact thing happened - my girlfriend liked the bracelet but the pressure from the vendor was annoying so we walked away. We stopped in the gift store on the resort and wouldn't you know it, the were selling the exact same thing. I forget what the peso-dollar exchange was, but I think it ended up being $6 US.

Just make sure you can get it on the plane. I saw a whole lot of sunscreen in the "voluntary abandon" bin

Sit on the beach and smoke cuban cigars, one of the pleasures of life denied us here in the US. Watch out for counterfeits. Bring me back a Monte Cristo #3.

Is it possible to bring back a cigar and rum back?

The sunscreen, deodorant, etc. will all be checked.
