I'm not a proponent for guns, and I'm not a big fan of people wandering the streets armed to the teeth as they seem to do here in Michigan (just moved here; wierd state, but good beer).

But I thought this was a thoughtful piece, and I figured some of you might enjoy it.

Here goes . . .

+1 on the video.

KC, where in the heck in MI did you move to? I've spent a lot of time in MI and unless you are talking about deer season, that doesn't sound like what I'm used to seeing. I haven't been near Detroit for quite a while though. We will probably be moving to the Traverse City area in the next few years ourselves.

Sifo,

I've moved to downtown Flint. Has it's good points, and the town is trying hard to fight its way back.

Our apartment is right next to the Occupy Flint encampment. Likely the best armed band of hippies/tea partiers in the country (confusing I know, but they seem a little schitzo about which side they're on).

They set up a little guard shack, and they like to stand on post with pistols on their thighs like Han Solo. It's clear that one guy in particular has been waiting his whole life to have reason to parade around with his own personal "Vera" by his side. Probably strokes it gently and talks to it before he goes to sleep at night.

Otherwise, we've found a lot to like about Flint. The Flint Coney Dog is terrific, and Bell's and Short's beers have been fun to taste.

Visited Travers City a couple of months ago, and we had a good time. It's pretty up there, and the roads seemed more promising than here in the flats. I swear; Kansas City has more curves than Eastern/Central Michigan

Never spent time in the Flint area. Come to think of it though, the southeaster quadrant of the state is kind of known for it's militia groups. I had a cousin that was part of the Michigan Militia at one time. Interesting about the occupiers you describe.

The TC area has some great riding. It would be worth weekend trips from Flint if you get the chance. Summer is a wonderful time up there.

Kcfirebolt,
Welcome to Michigan, I am in Lansing. Get used to the folks practicing open carry, people don't seem to notice anymore and if you ask sombody practicing open carry you will likely get a lesson in the Constitution's 2nd amendment.
Traverse City is a great place to ride as are the county roads around the many lakes and rivers in the state.
I work in Flint area frequently.

I like my guns
I am not exactly entirely excited about the state having a monopoly and exclusive opportunity to have them
I know when push comes to shove, the daily pack and carry is there way before any response from civil servants.

We only have the occasional open carry person around here. I can tell you that 99.9% of the time I have a gun on me, but you will rarely see it!

YES MICHIGAN THE FEELING!

The roads in the south east suck! Traverse City, Sutton Bay, Tunnel of Trees! Now thats some good riding. We should do a trip to the motorcycle camp ground just south of TC this year!

Great video, much better than the crap I watched this morning;

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/46316454/ns/today-to day_rossen_reports/

In a nutshell they're spouting off how easy it is to buy a weapon online. Criminals are going to have guns no matter what, the only thing they'll ever accomplish is unarming law abiding citizens.

Guess I'll be a criminal.

You cannot by a gun on line that is complete BS!!!! I am a 20 year Federal Firearms holder read my lips it is not legal to buy a gun on line and there is no "Gun Show loop hole" . If you see a gun at an online auction house or dealer you select the gun pay for the gun then it gets shipped to a local dealer to you then he does the appropriate federal background check and if you pass you get the gun. Period! If you go to a gun show and you purchase from an individual it is there responsibility to ensure you are not a felon (most states require a permit of some sort) if you buy from a dealer at a show he is required to do the same back ground check as in his store front. If you purchase a fire arm of any kind as a felon you are in violation of a number of federal laws! So you see it is not possible in the US to buy a gun as a felon without violating the 1968 Gun control act period. If you do it you are a criminal and by definition will not abide by the law hence laws only effect the honest gun owner.

Red... I wondered about what "private sale" documentation is prudent and customary.

What's the recommended practice if you want to protect yourself as a seller? Just find an FFL and go through them? That's where I am today (unless it was a close friend or family member that I knew for a fact wasn't legally prohibited). I wondered what is common practice though.

Well, online by means of a website akin to a Craigslist where person a wants to buy a gun and person b says I have one to sell, where do you want to meet.
I'm well aware of the FFL practice.
Every October we have a local festival where gun trading is a huge draw.

Check out the woman with the shotgun slung over her shoulder. I'd say more than half that crowd has a gun of one kind or another. I personally know at least two FFL holders are there and to the best of my knowledge no checks are made. Is it illegal? Why yes, yes it is but do you think anyone there, felon or not has thought about the 1968 felon act?
This festival has been going on for over 200 years. 200 years of buying, selling and trading guns right out in the open market the way it should be. I'm not trying to be confrontational but why aren't people up in arms at the 109 people killed in car accidents a day? It's still much easier to legally purchase a car than it is a gun.

What is commonly done by someone who is selling a gun to an individual if they do not have any other state level guidance is to ask for a copy of the persons drivers lic. and do a bill of sale and have them sign the bill of sale stating that they are not a felon or under indictment for domestic violence. And no I am not dumb enough to think that the open air "Flea Market" environments that you refer to are not having rampant gun sales between persons without any kind of verification or communication as to the buyers status to purchase legally. I know as well as you it happens. That does not make it right or legal. Many states like mine (NC) require a pistol permit issued by the Sheriff or a copy of a CCW to be retained by the seller for there records. many do not and they are outside of state and federal statute. In short verify what your state requires or you will at some point fall asunder of the GCA of 1968

Yes its always better to ask a dealer to do the transfer for you we general charge around 35.00$ as a standard and do the back ground check for you.

Lets be clear Kyrocket... person to person sales (regardless if the people met on craigslist, a gunshow, or at their church) are 100% legal, provided both parties can legally posses a firearm and provided they don't cross state lines. So the vast majority of these transactions are 100% legal.

What you are saying is illegal and occurring is that a convicted felon could go to a gun show or answer an add on craigslist, meet someone in person, lie to them, and attempt to buy a gun from them. I bet you would find most gun owners concerned about exactly this thing as well.

Sounds like a GREAT opportunity for a officer to set up some sting operations, and a really cheap and effective way to get felons committing felonies back off the street. I hope our cops are doing it.

I KNOW, I KNOW, THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING: )

It was the link I put in that was offensive. The interviewer, Rossen, was ambushing these people who were selling a gun asking, "what if these people are terrorists, what if they go out and kill or harm someone; rob a bank". If both are clean and can legally posses then no harm, no foul. I think we're all on the same page and in agreement it's just these forums are hard to relate emotion and nuances.

By the way I am some what emotional about it because I am one of those evil "Dealers of Death" as I am so told anyway. I abide by the law I dont write it. So I get a little testie on the subject.

I've purchased 2 guns online. Both were shipped to a local FFL who then did the federal background check and filled out all the necessary paperwork.

Private sales are allowed, but I would check local laws. Around here a you need a FOID card to own a gun, buy ammo etc. The seller should get a copy of that as his proof that he was selling to someone who can legally own a gun. You are supposed to keep that and of course the serial # of the gun on record for at least 10 years after the sale. If the gun winds up as part of a criminal investigation you want the proof that you sold it to Joe Blow in a legal transaction.

We should do a trip to the motorcycle camp ground just south of TC this year!

Where's this MC camp ground? Of course I've got other options available to me 20 minutes West of TC. A trip up there sounds interesting though.

And it's been discussed on here before but I'm going to try hard and go this year since it's only about an hour and a half ride from my house but April 13,14, and 15th is the spring Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot. There are two things I really want to do, the jungle shoot and if money and time allow I'd love to fire up a flamethrower. They have about anything you'd ever want to shoot for rent. Youtube has dozens of videos if you so choose. The fall shoot is out of the question as it's the same weekend as our annual festival here that I have to work.

They have a similar machine gun shoot out in the Nevada desert here(don't remember where or when, sorry).Pretty much the same setup as the Knob Creek one.Would be cool to go and just"see" all the fun, cool "toys" there.Wouldn't be able to afford to go and have a "fun session".
