The scientologists copped it here today.

On a side note, they tried to recruit me in London back in the early '80s but rapidly gave up when I started asking awkward questions.

Dang!

I remember reading "Dianetics", thought the first half of it made sense, then the last half just lost me.

Never made it into the "religion" side of things (Scientology), but Chick Corea, my favorite jazz musician/composer, apparently follows it, and dedicates most all of his works to L. Ron Hubbard. This doesn't diminish my appreciation of Corea's work at all- if anyone gets a chance to see him live, DO IT.

Back to Hubbard- FWIW, I read his sci-fi novel "Battlefield Earth", despite its hugeness- I actually thought it was a great novel, well paced and engaging, good reading from beginning to end.

The movie that Travolta made of it was pathetic.

I liked it. I'm a sucker for sci-fi. Quite a unique story and Travolta as usual was excellent.

Good on France for calling the cult a cult or whatever. Can totalitariaist islamism be next?

Labeled a "criminogenic" organization by the German state of Bavaria in 1997.

I've read 2 very different books that had chapters on Scientology. One was a Christian book called "Kingdom of the Cults" and Scientology is one of the cults they examine in detail.

The other was a book on the history of science fiction by Lester Del Ray. Del Ray recounted how he, Ron Hubbard, and several other young men were up-and-coming scifi writers in the early 50's. John Campbell was an editor and publisher who worked with them to publish their stories. Hubbard wrote a few stories about ESP and related subjects and Campbell thought they were great and encouraged him to write more like that. After several years of doing that, Hubbard basically announced to them that the stories weren't fiction but were based in fact. Del Ray and the others knew it was complete bunk because they'd been there when Hubbard started writing these stories and knew he'd made it all up.

Crazy to imagine how far the thing has gone from such cracked beginnings.

We have several members of the BW who aren't too articulate, I addressed Ken as to his last post to mine, which was approaching insane, or at least lacking basic logic.

Myself I thought Travolta did a great job. I consider the movie better than the book. Very Rare.

OTOH, I actually liked the first ( yeah, they made more than one...dread Cthulu, WHY? ) Starship Troopers Movie. and it was done by a guy who hated the book, dumped all the best parts and weapons, and made a horrible space bug movie. Liking the absurdity of the movie doesn't make it within a lightyear of Heinlein's coming of age novel.

Entire religion based on a bar bet. Turned into a jillion dollar money making con, and led to the murder ( alleged ) of Hubbard.

BTW- apparently a re-make is in the works for Starship Troopers. Let's hope the next one bears a little more resemblance to the book.

Starship troopers (the movie) was a funny and light parody of the book.

Starship troopers (the book) was a really neat read, engaging on a simple "fun read" level, but also posing some interesting thoughts (voting is a right you earn with an investment of blood and sweat, not a universal entitlement).

Somebody could make a really good movie if they took the book more seriously.

A good Heinlein book to make into a movie would be The moon is a harsh mistress if they followed the book Oh never mind that wouldn't happen.

"A good Heinlein book to make into a movie would be The moon is a harsh mistress if they followed the book Oh never mind that wouldn't happen."
It's happening more and more. I'm reading the Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars series because of a movie trailer for "John Carter" coming out in March. Even based on the trailer, I can see that it's pretty faithful to the books. Very Entertaining. ERB was a big influence on Heinlein, to the point that he named some of his characters "Carter"...

I heard that Newt is using "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" in his campaign platform!

Me too, on account of there was no other half. I think our good friend Squids got a little confused about which thread he was posting to. It was interesting to see in writing though.

I hate it when I lose arguments with myself. joker

SQUIDS... I think you have been overtaken by body thetans and they are playing mind games with you...

SO, I just finished a new book on Scientology. It is called "Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secretive Religion".

Now, I LOVE READING NON-FICTION, and quite frankly I feel it is essential to my sanity. But, this book, was even better in some ways than Krakauer's "Under The Banner of Heaven" that was written about the Lafferty boys who killed a woman and her baby under the delusion that God told them to do it. Krakauer's book does a good job of combining the personal stories of the Laffertys and the history of Mormonism and then the history of the Fundamentalist LDS cult.

I think Janet Reitmen, who wrote "Inside Scientology" is a genious and an inspiration to aspiring writers everywhere.

It is amazing what she has gotten done, and what courage it has taken her to write this book, considering that LRH and th CoS has developed expertise at extreme harassment and intimidation through the legal system.

They have even broken into Federal offices and were convicted of several felony counts of tampering with an ongoing (FBI) Federal investigation. Google "Operation Snow White".

Oh, and apparently, LRH who hated psychiatry with a passion and vehemently denounced drugs, had track marks on his arms and Vistiril (a sedative used as a theraputic psych drug) in his system when he finally croaked.

It is really sad how many victims there have been of LRH and David Miscavige, the current CoS leader.

Fortunately, the internet has proved a great tool to help people leave and to help family members whos children have signed "A Billion Year Contract" with the CoS.

There is even a surprise near the ending of the book that will get you to jump up and cheer, even if you are in your bed after midnight reading.

I would highly recommend this book. I picked it up at the library Sunday afternoon and I finished it Wednesday night. It is no easy read, with 369 dense pages and over 80 pages of endnotes and bibliography.

(not so?) Funny story....

A friend / coworker is a former Scientologist. He always tapped into my technical expertise - but half the time I was just plugging something back in the right way.

Anyway, one day he tells me that his DSL service is down and asks if I can help him fix it. I checked it out and it seemed like he had line troubles - or that whatever the problem was was on the other side of his DSL modem.

Later that same week, he tells me over the phone line that DSL service was on that he thinks his phone is being tapped by the Scientologists and is asking how to ask the phone company if his phone line is tapped.

I tell my buddy, "This is great! You're having DSL problems. Do not ask the phone company if someone is tapping your phone lines. They'll think (know) you're insane. Tell them your DSL is down and you suspect a 'Bridge Tap'. Please be VERY specific and use that exact term. DO NOT TALK TO THEM ABOUT YOUR PHONE LINES BEING TAPPED."

For those who don't know, DSL is very finicky about line conditions - including Bridge Taps which are apparently, uh, taps (not necessarily nefarious) in the phone line.

He never got to make the call to the phone company because later that day his DSL started working and the funny sounds on his phone line stopped.

In my storage I have a copy of the 500+ "aphorisms" of Scientology. Got it years ago when I was researching brainwashing techniques, from a Canadian former "Guardian of the Organization" (G.O., Scientology's police force & black ops division) who was kicked out when young Daveyboy Miscarriage, the nazi dwarf (looks like and hangs with Tom Cruise) took over after El Ron's death and needed loyalists to keep the ruse going and the money flowing.

The organization dismisses psychology because everything in their carefully worded indoctrination manual IS psychology. Hmm, who'da thunk?
