OK friends, I'll throw this out there, maybe someone can advise:

I got this weird "art deco" type chair- my best buddy was gonna toss it, I thought it was funky enough to keep, even sits comfortably- so he gives it to me.

Had it for several years now, tried once or twice to research it online- until today. Googled it one more time, followed a thread to someone selling a chair by the same provenance/maker- they were asking $3500 for the dang thing, and the upholstery didn't even look as original as mine!

Another link showed a pair, different design but same maker- $6500!!

Anyone have ideas as far as figuring out the marketability of this thing? I like the chair just fine, but I'd like that kind of $$$ a LOT better...

Maker is Joaquin Gasconia Palencia, selling as "Balaico" (company) from the Phillipines- chair has original brass stamped serial # on its underside too.

Is it comfortable? It sure is strange-looking.
It's worth what someone will pay for it; you need some artsy-type to gush and fawn over it to drive the price up.

E-bay it with a ridiculous starting bid, and be very creative with the prose...

Speak to a reputable dealer or even contact a museum etc' to get a realistic valuation.
There are actually some reputable folk out there who specialize in this kind of thing!

Chauly- did you find a pic? I don't have any yet, but I want to research it more with someone who is an authority on these things. Wish the Antiques Roadshow would come around within a few hours drive- the GF has a couple of clown paintings done by Edward Runci as well- she's convinced they are worth some big $$$.

Of course, it's all pie in the sky...

Brit- given that I'm in the Knoxville area, there's not too many folks who could speak to its value- although I know of one place that has been doing modern home decor for quite some time now, may give them a call.

Joaquin Gasgonia Palencia has a facebook page, might be able to give you some more info.

Squids: You have the internet. Send pic's of it to a reputable dealer. You found one thread identifying it so become an on-line detective.
Do the research & follow what you find.

Maybe this shows the limitations of Googling something.

Gonna head to town tomorrow and try to pick some peeps brains.

Stuff made in the 1990's is now vintage and collectible? Man, I'm getting old!
I've seen some funky pieces on the Antiques Road Show that were worth way more than you'd think.

Nope, it only means that you aren't trying hard enough. If I can find classified documents on the internet, I'm sure I can find something about your chair, but I need a bit more to work with. Post some pictures!

It's a dated style, popular in the 80's and '90's. Architects like Michael Graves and designers like the firm "Memphis" made the style popular. I'm sure it already has value, but only to someone who is working on a decor with that theme, or a collector of stuff from that period.

Go down that "Memphis" or "post-modern" or "PoMo" route if you decide to market it yourself. Don't go into Art Deco, because it's not, and you may well get nasty, condescending comments from some very catty decorators.

If I were you, I'd sell it - it looks impractical and uncomfortable, and the idea of someone spending large amounts of disposable income for such a piece, and that money going to a Bueller.... puts a smile on my face!

Oops- I'd originally said $3500, but it's $3250- still, aint too shabby.

The link I found with the other chair like mine is as follows- you'll have to "scroll" to the right about 6-8 items to get to it. I'll see about posting pics- dangit if after all this time on BW I've yet to do so with anything...

Bart- good catch, that was the only other example I found of the guy's work.

+1! Except, believe it or not, it is actually quite comfortable for a sit! Given what I'm finding out about it, dunno if I should allow any sitting on what looks to be original upholstery...

Thanks for the input, folks...

You could always go the "reality TV" route; here's a couple of options for that:

Show up at "Antiques Road Show" and watch the furniture guys have a fit about it.

Go to Las Vegas and show up at the "Pawn Stars" shop. They'll bring in an expert appraiser who'll say it's worth $5000, then with a straight face they'll offer you $1000.

Yeah, Hugh- me and the GF always like to watch the PBS show, amazing what shows up there. Last time a lasy showed up with an original lithographed picture book of the Mexican war, all there, IIRC it was worth around $30-35K...

Examples of vinta sailboats, the inspiration for your lovely chair. Scroll down for plenty of photos.

Thanks, but you're referring to the leather chairs posted above- mine is a different (but similarly weird) design.

Sorry squids, I got lazy and didn't look at your example. Now having looked at your representative photo I have to say I like the style. I think it might be right at home in the surrealism section of the Menil Collection in Houston.

Squids- speaking of Antique Road Show, I've seen 2 really cool finds lately:

An older guy brought in 3 or 4 ornately carved bowls, maybe 4-6 inches in diameter. He had paid maybe a couple of thousand bucks total for them. Turns out they were made from rhino tusks. The guy valued them at $1M-$1.5M!!!

The other was a lady that brought in her granddad's 1920's Gibson mandolin. Her granddad had bought it from a neighbor during the depression for $20, and it had been sitting in a closet for much of the time since then. The guy valued it at $175k!!!
