Man, the few posts are tough. Any care taker of a pet will go through this eventually. It's the last act of kindness.
OK, on a brighter note, I have a request. I am desperately trying to find a special toy for our Dachshund - Donny.
Kong used to make a Air Dog medium throwing ring. A while back they changed it from a flat donut shaped ring to a "warped donut" the old style rolls really when you throw it so it lands on its edge. With the new style you never know what direction it's going to go. Plus, it only rolls about a third the distance.
Donny's favorite thing to do is to chase the ring. He will do it until your arm falls off. It doesn't matter if it's 95 and humid or 15 and snowing. He wants to chase the ring. The farther the throw the better.
Since Kong stopped making the "flat" style ring I've burned through our supply. We are now on the last ring, it no longer has any of the "tennis ball fuzz" on it so it's about had it. Donny knows the difference between a genuine Kong ring and the cheap imitations. He wants nothing to do with the fake ones. Must be the smell or something.
Anyway, If anyone sees one of the original flat style rings anywhere I WANT IT!!!!
Here's a picture of the old style and the new crappy wobbly ones...
Original Good one..
Crappy Wobbly New Style
Tough to see in the picture but the Crappy New Style is bent slightly towards you at the 9:00 and 3:00 and the opposite direction at the 12:00 and 6:00 position.
If anyone sees one of the old ones PLEASE pick it up for me.
I even talked to the folks at Kong, they have no plans to start making the old style again...
I really feel for you man. I've had to put down several of my best friends and it's never easy. There was
Penny Joe Cocker Spaniel, Bounce The Wonderdog Sonic Ranger
All of them dogs I've loved and had to put down. I shed tears for each of them but never doubted I made the right choice, if not the easy choice for them.
All I can say is that soon the pain of the loss fades away and you're left with wonderful memories of great dogs who shared your life and made it better.
Now, on a happier note here are some new photos of Chief, just because he's cool and I already love him.
For future reference: I also thought of dissecting one of the new ones to examine it, then maybe a low temperature bake in the oven with another (safely!)- that might correct, or "true" it up to roll right...
I gotta believe that things like this are always "findable" in today's world... just got a long-lost CD from CA in the mail on Saturday!
Let us know if you find success- gotta say that knowing weiner dogs, I'd hate to see one depressed over the loss of a toy like that!
Squids, thanks for the heads up. I called them today to check the warehouse inventory to see which one they had in stock. Suppose to get a call tomorrow.. fingers crossed..
Just a quick update. Bonnie is getting better. She can walk better now. She still can't get up on her own and can't walk inside on our tile floors, but if I carry her outside she can walk a bit on her own and take care of her business. She is also only getting me up twice a night now, down from 4-5 times, so that is much more manageable for me.
Her sores are still bad, but that is something we can manage.
I am really hoping she continues to get better, but I wanted to share the good news you all.
Dyna- have you looked into those rigs that look like ass-end training wheels, with adjustable straps/webbing to help the dog get around? I dunno, maybe something like that would help...
Vestibular syndrome has turned this "world's fastest dachshund" into a shaking, dizzy, mere shadow of his former self. But he still loves life and is not going anywhere, just needs a little more TLC -
Squid, I'm hoping not to need one of those rigs. She is getting a little better at walking each day.
Ulywife, I tried the towel thing, but for some reason it is just easier for me to hold her with my arms. Now all I really need to do is carry her outside and put her down. She is almost able to walk inside now, which is the main thing we need her to do now.
Honestly, I'm still concerned about her happiness. She seems ok for now though.
ý"The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself, too." ~ Samuel Butler
Hmmm- Dyna, I remember having a similar problem with my old buddy, trouble walking inside...
Maybe you could try some area rugs, throw rugs, and such to cover slick things like tile, linoleum, wood- dogs depend on their claws more to walk than we think.
My old buddy would kind of panic when he stepped on something that wasn't carpet, then he'd flex his claws to try and grip better- of course that would only exacerbate things, like he was on skates for the first time.
Think out all the places your pup might regularly walk indoors, then go get some cheap carpet. Maybe that'd help.
Thanks guys, we may have to try the carpet route. I'm going to give the socks a try for now and also see if she gets well enough to walk without it. It is a good idea to try though.
Well, most of you know that we are fostering puppies/dogs now over here. I thought I would post a few pics for those of you who still avoid Facebook like the plague The first girl we had was Harmony- a Rhodesian Ridgeback X Chow Chow. A beautiful inquisitive cute as a button 4 month old girl...
While she was in our care, she got more adventurous and a lot healthier! She has now gone to her 'Furever Home' with a big sister Jessie to play with...
The second girl we got for a short while was Nala, a 2 year old red husky...
She was just gorgeous, but we couldn't have her stay on, as she wasn't cat friendly.
