Here or there? Last time I saw the HKG's, they were at a rink just a couple of miles from my house... |

Rkc00, great photos, not only the subject matter, but the exposure, color and clarity. What gear did you use for these photos, and which post-processing program/techniques? Thanks in advance. *********************************************** (Message edited by jerry_haughton on January 09, 2012) |

Jerry Thanks. These were taken with a Nikon D3. Some were with a 600mm f4.0 lens on a monopod and some with my 300mm f2.8 lens free hand. I use Aperture for my post on a Macbook Pro. All my photos are shot in 16 bit Raw. They are about 25 megs each. I do a crop, Auto exposure and an auto levels first. Then see if I want to tweak from there. I sharpen and level next. Then I export out as a jpg file for uploading to my site. The program inserts my watermark during the export. I spend no more than 2 min. on a shot for the first upload. If I get an order for a shot I will go back and color correct if it needs it and export out as a jpg the final print size at 300 dpi for printing. I do not use photoshop. For the amount of photos I shoot it takes to much time. Not sure if you saw the race photo of mine that was used in the EBR contest but I processed that in HDR in a program called Photomatix. Photomatix Original Photo This was hand held with the 300 f2.8 at f11, iso 125, SS 1/250 (Message edited by rkc00 on January 09, 2012) |

Michael, excellent, thank you very much. I've been a hobby photog forever, kinda went dormant for a spell, and am now finding a renewed enthusiasm and passion for shooting. I'm astounded by the capabilities of today's digital cameras, and how elegant it is to be able to quickly process your photos in a computer instead of laboriously in a darkroom. I just picked up Photoshop Elements 10 and Premiere 10 (for video) during the holiday season, on sale for $50, off so am giving it a try. Maybe I'll reach a point in my learning curve where it's too slow for my needs, but I suspect that day is a ways off. I've got a Lumix FZ150 on order. It'll reach out to 600 mm, and reportedly has an excellent image stabilization program (the still and video samples I've seen from this camera are quite nice). I'm excited about having so much zoom, partly for the ability to reach out and touch the subject, of course, but I've also always enjoyed the interesting compression effects you can get from photographing nearby subjects with a lot of zoom; the B&W shot of the steam locomotive above has a bit of that going on. Thanks again for sharing your photos and info; beautiful work, and much appreciated. FB |

Here is some of that telephoto effect. Those jetty's are at least 200 yards apart from each other. |

Here is a photo of my D3 with the 600mm on it. This photo shows how far away the first jetty is in the other photo. I am still about 40 yards away from the jetty behind me. This is about the spot that I took that first photo from with the same setup. The next jetty is the same distance away. Oh and those little black dots in the water are surfers. Here is a shot from that day

Buell Rider X. the floating homes shown above. Are those on the Columbia River in Portland? I know the guy that builds those, and it looks like the area where his home is. Really cool floating homes. Full Blown homes, floating on the river. Walk out the back door, and the river is right there. The garage you pull in, is for boats, and not cars. REX |
