Has anyone made a smoker lately? I am in the process of Building a UDS (ugly drum smoker) with a twist on it. I was going to make the fire box adjustable to make it for use as a grill also. Anyways I was wanting some input. Paint is going to be the hardest to try to camouflage the barrel and not make it too much of an eyesore for my yard. (Message edited by p47b on January 02, 2012) |

Ooohh- sounds like fun! And thanks for starting another good thread topic... I've basically no experience with smoking meats, but one of my favorite cooking shows on PBS is by Steven Raichlen- actually he's had two different ones- BBQ University and Primal Grill. You might do well to surf those sites, at least for some great recipes... And, I'm sure there's a plethora of good info on the 'net, with some creative googling... Pics of the better ideas, pleeze! |

This might give you an idea for your UDS. Hope so. I've had a lot of grills and smokers but this one is my favorite. Really easy to work with whether grilling or smoking. http://pkgrills.com/index.php |

Cowboy, I would love to do that. I was looking for a little more portable though. They have a UDS on there. I'm still looking for paint ideas and might of found one. Just not too crazy about Coors.
My next door neighbor had PK grill for years... |

If you want to camouflage it, try making it look like something else. This is the BBQ for the local car club "The Crackers Club" where I used to live. It's the front end carved off an old Peugeot, got a tow bar on it too. Lift the hood, & light it up.

If you have a weber kettle grill, get a smokenator. If you don't have a weber, get one, then get a smokenator. I've made a turkey and beef roast with it, both turned out awesome. http://smokenator.com/store/products.php?catID=1

I made one out of 1/2 of a whiskey barrel(didn't have a whole barrel). Made three legs to hold it off the ground a couple of feet. Made a covered fire pit with a draft control and run stove pipe from the pit to the bottom of the smoker. The top sides of the barrel was ringed with 1//2 inch holes and corks to control the amount of heat. |

This paint needs to be updated but here is mine...it's named R2BBQ Directions for making a UDS can be found here... http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/ Pork Butts rubbed Pork Butts on the UDS Pork Butts ready to pull I like Pork Butts, and I do not lie, my Pulled Pork you can't deny... My UDS has three racks, two for BBQ and one for water or a big pot of baked beans...usually they're under the Spare Ribs..which look like this... Nothing like Ribs and Erdinger in a frosted mug... Get yourself a good remote thermometer they are great. Buy these two books: Paul Kirk's, "Championship Barbecue" Steven Raichlen, "How To Grill" If you need more help PM me. That's the whole reason I am doing this Ulynut. A family of 5 going to a good BBQ joint costs me an average of $45. No less than that. I figured that I could get a really nice cut of meat with my own beans for about $20 and still come out ahead. I have an uncle that has an apple and peach tree that always need trimmed and we have access to a few hard wood trees including pecan. |

Some of these UDS's look like the same design as a Brinkman smoker/grill. Brinkman's is fine smokers. They work very well. Why not just buy a Brinkman? It will still save you money in the long run. In fact, making a UDS yourself could end up costing more by the time you're done. |

A lot of the pieces on a UDS can be bought at yard sales. My drum was free, etc. All in all, price is comparable, very true. but you don't have the opportunity to make yours. You will always have lively discussions of propane versus coals (almost like an oil thread here) Smoker versus cooker, versus grill, etc., ad nauseum. But I hope it comes down to the same thing most people say here, "It doesn't matter what you ride, just ride" So, it doesn't matter what you BBQ with, just BBQ." REVz |

Beef ribs. Sugar, cayenne, salt. 6 hours later. I just throw a cover over the smoker when I'm not using it, and hide it around the side of the house. |
