the lovely time piece was the work of our own J Ramsey.. the pix below are its creation from a busted XB front rim from his buddies bike..
the bent rim is bolted to the milling machine table to remove the back side hub
roughing off of bent or undesired areas of the casting
the bearing is off of the rim metal must be removed from the back side to allow the clock to sit flat on the wall |

VERY cool. I looked at the first picture, and thought "who's brake rotor is that...and won't those holes be too big, and cause pad material to get chunked out?" Didn't even notice it was a clock. Awesome. |

further metal is to be removed to flatten the back and clear the clock movement.
the rim is mounted on a rotary table this tool allows the user to turn the work piece on the machine table for hole patterns and cutting round surfaces
clearence is cut into the hub for the movement
a rough oversize aly ring is cut and mounted ( brake disk )
here is the rim and disk mock up ready for holes (numbers) the movement mount plug (no pic) and assembley
Thanks James best Christmas present ever! |

That's amazing!I just got through watching a video of Rush's Time Machine Tour.Neil Peart's drum kit has a steam punk look with gears and clock faces all over it.That wheel clock reminds me of it. http://www.promark.com/news/view/photos-of-neil-pe arts-time-machine-kit/ I'm now on a search for a fracked wheel! |

I can see a problem right off - the reduced rotating mass and unsprung weight means your clock is going to run fast! |

J-Ramsey, Old Dog, VERY cool! What clock movement did you use? It's a High Torque unit but where did you get it? I've had a project in mind for some time, just never got around to it.. now's the time. Brad |

Super cool! Idea- they might be too heavy, but either some brake/clutch levers or a facsimile of them could be the hands, and a tach needle for the seconds...

Nice work. What is the name of the bit used to cut out the hub? |

it is a variation of a single end end mill the wavy edges are supposed to distribute the work load more evenly and allow better heat and chip removal.. the golden color is titanium nitride coating which helps wear and holding an edge I believe that the cutter is used for "roughing" |

Brad-- The movement and hands came out of a clock that I had in a junk drawer, the stem is 7/8"long IIRC. It was wall tested for about 30 days prior to shipping.
Compared to my Atomic clock it ran about 5-6 seconds slow during that time. |

Wow- that thing looks great on the wall! OK, dangit, I've got an old favorite wall clock that I've GOT to get running again- EVERYTHING about it is backwards. The numbers, number sequence, AND the movement are all backwards... I used to hang it just beside/above the front door of an old apartment, with a huge wall mirror being the first thing you see when you walk inside- you just reflexively look up and see the time- then as you leave, it kinda messes with your mind. It's a simple movement, very similar to many cheap wall clocks, except for it running backwards- any clues as to how to futz with it without destruction? It's well worth handing over to a pro, all things said... |

That looks great! I was planning on doing the same with my broke rim I have in the garage. Though my plans are no where near what you did. Really does look awesome |
