Well, I move in a month and will be doing more riding to and from work.

In the dark.

So, I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger on some HID conversion H7's - one for the CR low beam, and the other for the Uly. But...I can't decide on 6k or 8k color temp. I don't want "blue"...but I'd like to stay away from the yellows too. I'll still have halogen high beams, so some contrast will be nice...

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Rat,
I know you saw my Uly in 2010 at the TWO. I was running 5500k HID's. They are bright and as Panhead_dan said... Dead White when warmed up.

I am currently running 6k's on my KLR and I don't like the Blue tint as well as not being as bright as the 5500k.

Color temperature will vary from brand to brand. One company will say their thing is 8000k, and it will be identical to another brands 6000k.

That said, OEM HID kits on cars all about 4500k. All bulbs in the end are the same, but the way they get the different color is by putting a colored coating on them, and that reduces light output, so I recommend sticking with 4500k as the bulbs will be natural.

I have a 6000k in my Hayabusa low beam. I wish I had gone with 5000k, so it would be whiter.

I have 3k low beam and 6k high beam in my uly. Both from DDM tuning. The 3k, obviously, is yellow. The 6k has just a hint of blue. I can't see any blue at all when looking at it from the front, but it's visible from the saddle enough to convince me to go with 5k next time I need to buy a hid.

Froggy
the color is due to metals inside the capsule of the hid the capsule operates hot enough to cause the quartz tube to glow when switched off ( think red hot headers ) I dont know of any paint that can stand that heat..
happy new year..

Yeah, I thought the color was from the chemical makeup of the gas inside the capsule...

We'll see how the 6k does. Ordered a pair tonight.

Consider only doing a hid on the low side. They don't like to be turned off and on quickly. If I had it to do over, I'd keep the halogen high beam.

Yes, it's the makeup of the metal halides which determine the color. Hence, the name metal halide light.

They'll be only on the low beams. I got a pair-kit, though, because they're cheaper when bundled. I'll put one in the low of the CR, and one in the Uly. The CR keeps the low beam on with the high, from the factory, and I can redo the high beam mod on the Uly to keep its low beam on too.

6k for sure!

I had 8k, but swapped it out after a few months.

8k is really blue. 6k just has a hint of blue, but mostly white.

I had 6k from DDM on my Mazda, it was noticeably but not obnoxiously blue. I personally didn't care for it.

I have 5k on my S3 and it's pretty much just pure white.

Some of the high-end bulbs might change color temp through the metals inside, but if you get them from DDM, that won't be the case. I had a set of 3k for the fog lights on my Mazda from DDM, and they openly advertised that they were 5K bulbs with a yellow coating on them, which is exactly what they looked like.

well after my first night ride last night....I think the 6k is a little blue for my tastes.

DDM offers a 4300; I think I'll get some replacement capsules and see how they do. They're only $15 a pair.
