I had a hole in the side of a tooth and made a "non urgent" appointment to get it taken care of. A old filling was gone.7:00 A.M. and in the chair. No xray,no Novocain.........just a quick dab with a grinder and a filling pushed into the hole and smoothed off. Probably 4 minutes of real work if you subtract the conversations. 7:12 A.M. and I am at the desk, paying the bill............$121.00!!!!
She is a good dentist and I have been going to her for 30 years. Was always kind of spendy for fillings........but Daayum,$121.00 ? Can only imagine what the take is per week. Looks like about 20 grand/week with 3 part time assistances that share the work week. They are always booked solid for a couple weeks or more.
I guess everybody wants to be a millionaire.......
I shouldn't bitch as the care is great and worth it.............but still................

$121 for any type of dental repair is cheap in my opinion.

Last time I had work done, I got a crown on my #2 molar, and it ended up being almost $2000.

After the insurance paid their part, I was still on the hook for $1100.

Ask my why I'm not getting my #30-#31 bridge repaired. It sits on my dresser in two pretty little pieces. I'm learning to live without it, since it was originally over $3000, and it will be almost $1200 to have it repaired.

$121 is cheep. I am assuming you paying and not any insurance. They charge the insurance a whole lot more because of the hassle.

That is very cheap. I just spent $563 to have 2 filling and crown prep done. 2 weeks the crown comes in and thats another $500 copay. And I have excellent insurance!

I would imagine, much like medical doctors, that dentists insurance costs are pretty high. Equipment can't be cheap nor the trained hygienists.

Dentists are much like a motorcycle shop/dealer, if you find a good one it is worth paying a little bit more. Ever go to a bad dentist? You won't go back trust me.

Talk to me about cheap dentists...I just put a kid in braces. OUCH!

One thing you gotta figure though is, and I'm going on my dentist's office, they're paying either rent or mortgage for that nice office, mine has several mag. subscriptions for me to peruse while I wait. I watch cable television if I don't want to read Motortrend or Good Housekeeping. They've got about four nice chairs with all the dental accoutrements they need and an x-ray machine not to mention all the shop materials and free toothbrushes for my parting gift for being a good boy.

I agree that does sound high for a time vs. money spent job but theys gots to pay the bills I guess

Should had the tooth pulled. Would have been half the price and would have eliminated any further problems.

$121 is quite reasonable.

Just received an estimate on my daughter's molar that is in need of a root canal. $1200 for the root canal and $1072 for post and crown. Dentistry has gotten way too expensive.

You pay a dentist for their labor, skill and experience. The time spent is irrelevant to the cost if the outcome is good.
When you deduct the dentist's over head. They take home very little of that, which you spent.

Just be glad you have a good one.

Never skimp on dental care. Never! The price you'll pay with poor health isn't worth it.

Good teeth=good health

Dime-a-dozen dentists=many
Excellent dentists=few

I'm willing to make a plug for ours in Waukesha Wisconsin...Vincent McAvoy. Best dentist I've ever had.

I have to save up $1200 for a titanium screw and installation. hmmm, I've got a screw gun and a case of Reddy Whip. Wonder how much that screw retails for.

AEHolton,

>>> $1200 for the root canal and $1072 for post and crown.

Try to find a local dentist who has a Cerec system, one visit for root canal and complete crown; no need for a blank and two week wait; they digitize and machine the crown from a blank right there in the office. Too cool. Cost me $1,200 total no insurance.

We had our daughter's 4 wisdom teeth removed last week. They are billing out $2,400! Thankfully we have double coverage and between the two insurance companies we should have a zero balance due. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Dental care is expensive and unfortunately so many companies don't offer dental coverage.

"Dental care is expensive and unfortunately so many companies don't offer dental coverage."

How true- one of old customers was a dentist/gearhead, with his practice just around the corner from the dealership- he and his wife were one of the few who would just come in and find a bike they wanted, and just stroke a check without anyone blinking- CVO or not.

Great peeps too, BTW- had to laugh and marvel one day when his son, who was old enough to drive and had a macked-out Toyota sporty car, disobeyed Dad by saying he was one place whilst at another... he was promptly grounded, car sold, lost allowances, etc.!!! Needless to say, his kids tend to "act right"...
