I bought Mrs G a Canon Eos1100 for an early xmas present last year.
She's still learning how to use it but has taken some nice shots.
She shot these from the terrace of our house.

Great shots Dynasport and Rkc00. I'm still learning on my D2X, as well as the Lumix LX5 I recently got. Definitely more to it than just the gear. Mike's rig above is impressive, I'd not even know where to start... |

My Lumix (older LX-3) lacks the insane crispness and light quality of the high end DSLR's.
It keeps the low light sensitivity though, and it keeps the super wide angle lens I love. It will fit in the pocket of my cargo pants without being in the way. It will shoot in raw mode, but I don't bother, as I don't have the time to post process them anyway, and the camera (if I am in spot meter mode and pre-focus and pre-expose, which I do at this point without even thinking) generally does a fairly good job automatically.
I bought it (including lens) for about 1/3 of what just a similiar lens for a DSLR would cost... a nice used camera with three batteries and a spare charger for $275. That same money could probably get an LX5 today.
At that price, I can hand it to a kid or strap it to the top of a motorcycle helmet (both of which I have done) and not hyper ventilate.
The Leica optics on the camera are high quality and "tuned" to the sensor... both operating in their sweet spot, neither an expensive way to reproduce defects in the other.
Alex's LX5 addresses one big limitation of my LX3, which is that I can only go to 70mm or so zoom.
On the spec sheet, the Nikon high end point and shoot looks better, but in practice, it was no where near as good as an LX5.
I'll never get shots like Mike can get with his rig... but I'd never be able to get shots Mike can get even if I *had* his rig. 
I love the high end DSLR stuff... if I could afford to buy it, and could bring my self to haul it everywhere, it would be amazing. Meanwhile, I'm loving the prosumer point and shoots, and the fact that I can get 80% of the abilities for 20% of the cost of the "real gear". |

Thanks Fahren, much appreciated. I've got a real soft spot for candid portraiture:
This was taken at a car care clinic at Griot's Garage in Tacoma, Washington USA last year. My Nikon doesn't have an articulating screen, but I didn't want to take a chance on losing the purity of the moment by actually holding the camera up and aiming it at this beautiful father and child, so this was taken with the camera held at hip-level at my side, shooting blind, hoping to get an image. I got off two shots before the moment was gone, and got this wonderful photo as a reward.
After the seminar I told the father I'd taken several photos of his son (he hadn't noticed), and showed him this image on the display. He was very pleased. I asked for, and received, permission to use this photograph.
I got his e-mail address, gave him one of my cards, and sent him a high-res version of the image that night.
Several days later I got a very nice e-mail reply from him, thanking me for my random act of kindness. I thanked him in return, for trusting me to keep this image of his son, and for gifting me with such a beautiful photograph.
