I really enjoyed 90% of his take on everything. I wondered where he had been, haven't seen or heard a peep the past year or so. I will miss this guy. He became a U.S. citizen in 2007, on his 58th birthday, in a ceremony on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial.
He comes out with a whiskey and a cigarette. Shakes hands, sits down and pronounces.."George Bush is an idiot" Sip, puff, "Bill Clinton is a rapist" sip, puff, Then he said something really rude about Mother Teresa.
I liked him on the spot. While I disagreed with him on a LOT of stuff, politics, ideology, religion, I always found his work intellectually honest, and his insights worth a listen.
His reporting from inside some of the worst hells on Earth, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, etc. was the most honest and caught the real nature of the Kleptocrats and theocrats that ( to this day in many cases ) exploit, murder and torture their own people. This during a time when CNN was very much not reporting on Saddam's favorite wood chipper antics. To make more money.
His report on the Soviet built Swimming pool ( built on top of a hill, so that the water never was pumped up to it ) used as an torture/murder playground by the Taliban is one v-good example. ( people were forced to jump off the diving board into the dry pool, then shot after the Taliban had a good laugh. )
I'll miss Hitchens, and always regret never having had a chance to argue with him.
I was wondering when this would get posted. Though I don't frequent here much since the late summer, I tuned in to see if there was a thread 'bout hitch. Didn't always agree with the man, pretentious alot of the time. Loved his books, and his debates, and his report(not his politics) on waterboarding, I found him extremely inviting intellectually and I am sorry to see him go. His father died of esophageal cancer also I believe, though I am sure the smoking and excessive drinking did not help, which he had acknowledged. Hey fatty post a picture of your face and Im sure there is someone that can morph you into Jabba the hut.......... JK
The thoughts expressed in the video above on the nature of our Enemy are far clearer than the last administration was willing or daring to go. ( and I complained about that... a lot ) And about a light year better definition than the absolute denial this admin has.
A good example of Why I admired Hitchens's clarity of thought & word. ( while disagreeing a LOT on many subjects )
Simple. If you wish to impose your faith upon ME ( or anyone else ) by force, you are evil. If you use envy and hate to gain power, you are evil. If you deliberately lie about a subject to gain power you are evil. examples: Wells destroyed by Fracking, or perhaps Warmest Year On Record, or If You Aren't Guilty You Have Nothing To Worry About....( this harmless new law that takes away your rights as a citizen )
There are those who promote these things that are Useful Idiots, and not the "truly" evil men who stand to most gain.... Minions of Evil present us with a small moral dilemma.
As Hitch would never say... God will know his own. I rather hope he was pleasantly surprised to be wrong about that entire subject.
