This is what we have been hearing for the past 10 months or so....Mr. Flaherty (Federal finance minister)and Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney have been warning for months that Canadians need to start reducing debts racked up during a long period of ultra-low interest rates, in case they are unable to pay them off down the road if rates move higher." We started tightening the belt and eliminating some of our debts in earnest 14 months ago. How have you done lately? |

None at all. Everything I have is paid for. Nor am I rich by any means. It was all done on less than $30k/yr income. |

That's impressive, Gunut. What kind of planning and discipline did you set up to accomplish that? Many could learn from your thoughts, I'm sure! |

I still owe a few grand on two 1125's, then a few grand in credit cards. Nothing terrible, but I need to get the cards paid down before I can buy more bikes. |

Mine isn't bad about 6G on a bike and a few hundred on CCs. Problem is rising cost of living in my area is killing me. Also a little pissed that my credit took a 40 point drop on a 30 dollar copay that i didn't know existed... Grrrrr |

Debt free for 18 years! I did have a mortgage for a few months about 6 years ago when we bought a new house. Paid that off when the old house sold. |

Gunut. What kind of planning and discipline did you set up to accomplish that? I never accumulated a whole lot of debt when I was younger. I was never ambitious to borrow money either. I find ways to cut the cost of living by having big gardens, chickens (only 6), and local beef by the steer. My house is small and energy efficient. I drive cheap, easy to fix cars. The car sits all spring/summer/fall, and I take advantage of my XB's 48-50mpg average. Rain or shine. I just find the cheapest ways to do things and do them. I'm fine until the AX comes out. Yeah.............I concur. |

Gunut75 +1 Married to the same girl for almost 35 years. Lived in the same small house for over 32 years(very efficient heating and cooling). We never lived beyond our means. For years I drove any POS that was under $1000.00 so I could afford a nice motorcycle. I've been packing sack lunches for my entire adult life. We've been running debt free for well over fifteen years now. Kim has been very frugal with our funds and we steered our careers towards sound local businesses. It's called being responsible and protecting the financial well being of our family. Things that should have been taught in school but apparently not these days. We raised two kids with the same principles. Daughter is currently an RN at the Indiana Heart Center while studying for her masters. Our son worked his behind off so he could quit working for one year to complete his Masters in electrical engineering. Neither one is asking for student loan forgiveness. I have never uttered the word "CAN'T" that I didn't fear Dad's size 11 boot ankle deep in my arse. "Can't" is the moto of personal responsibility today. They all want the government to do it for them. Sad thing is I'm not sure we can take America back. We've raised several generations of dependent moochers who will vote for the most socialist candidate running. Anyone that would promise them more of something for nothing. Success is born from that lump between your ears and the effort you produce with your hands. Anytime you give something to someone who should have worked for it you diminish their desire to succeed on their own. (Message edited by jb2 on November 28, 2011) |

Good model for fixing a lot of problems in our country: I never accumulated a whole lot of debt when I was younger. I was never ambitious to borrow money either. After 28 years of marriage a late in life divorce has done immeasurable damage. Debt load is the highest I've had in my life. Alimony and (1) child support are at levels that make it very hard to make any progress toward clearing debt. The divorce judge laid claim to about 65% of my gross. I live very humbly but don't mind. It's just stuff. I eat, have a roof over my head and make a little progress every day. Life is better without her drunken, craziness. |

Revenge is for losers. Better is to move on. Tough to do sometimes, bit so incredibly liberating if/when you do. |

Blake, I take it you've never been divorced. Part of the process involves the ex-wife trying to punish you for being such a disappointment. That's why they ask for way more than their entitled to. Not that they want it or need it but they must deprive you of it. A few short years after my divorce was final, she'd blown through a boatload of money. Alimony was done in 5 years and as soon as each kid turned 18, she tossed them from the house ("Go live with your dad"). My suggestion that living well is the best revenge is not in the least vengeful. I just made it a point to be better off without her, not focusing on what she took but what I had left. It didn't take that long. |
