It's THAT time of year again!! Let the gluttony begin...Lets hear about some unusual foods (ok, they may be unusual to some, but ordinary to others). The other day in a different thread, Kenm123t brought up Lukefisk, a potentially toxic food if it is improperly prepared. There is a southern food called Poke Salad that if improperly cooked will make you hurl your toenails. Another popular southern food is Hominy, made by soaking whole corn kernels in a lye solution until they swell up to the size of your little finger. Either wash and dry for later or wash and boil. Some people use hominy in gumbo. So, what is your regional specialty? (Leave out turkey, ham, pumpkin pie, etc) |

If I'm home on Sunday afternoon, I listen to my fave radio show "The Splendid Table", an hour of radio "for people who love to eat"... they were talking about the basic goodness of "giblets", and the fact that most of the year, except for Thanksgiving, these parts of a bird are thrown away... great story! Plus, the host takes callers from all over the states- first time I'd heard anyone call in from Africa yesterday... dude was planning to roast a Thanksgiving turkey with a primitive, hand built cinderblock "oven", on a spit... that also was a neat conversation. Me and the GF are taking a homemade cherry cobbler to my stepdad's- got frozen cherries that we've picked and pitted from trees on my property going in... Great thread! |

Hmmm- everyone's heard about beer can chicken, and I'm aware of variants depending on the size of the bird, i.e. Cornish hen, duck, quail... wonder if a Foster's can would do for a not too big turkey? |

One year we ate a turkey that had been "spatchcocked." Yeah, I had to look that up, too. |

Dan- I watched a "Primal Grill" episode (a Stephen Raichlen show) where he did an Australian version called "Apostles on Horseback"... as I LOVE scallops, I had to resist shoving my head thru the TV screen trying to eat them. He had done some skewered shrimp at the same time. That guy kills me! Every show has him grilling/smoking/roasting something awesome, with several grills and smokers going great guns in the background for good measure... Track down that recipe, unless I beat ya to it EDIT: Nevermind Dan, hit this link... http://www.primalgrill.org/recipe_details.asp?RecipeID=162&EpisodeID=39 (Message edited by 86129squids on November 21, 2011) |

I just about have The Navigator talked into bacon wrapped scallops, stuffing in a pan (both cooked in the smoker), cranberry goop, dinner rolls, veggies and stuff. Less mess and cleanup, quicker and easier. I'm getting waaay hungry! |

Every year I make 3 kinds of stuffed broiled mushrooms: A. cream cheese filled, wrapped in bacon. B. crab meat filled, wrapped in bacon. C. crab meat and cream cheese filled, wrapped in bacon. I have also bought fresh pizza dough and spread some diced green pepper, mushroom and tomato's then some cheeze..then crumbled some bacon over that.. then add some more cheese. (no sauce) it is pretty good, I lightly coat the dough with olive oil but you can also just use Boboli pizza crust. It surprised me it was so good. |

With my background (Filipino/Quebecois) I have some REALLY unusual foods. Anyone who's watched "Fear Factor" is probably familiar with "Balut." This is a cooked, embryonic duck served in the shell. It is a very common "snack item" in the Filipino community, but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. However, I AM a big fan of "Dinuguan." Most restaurants that serve it describe it as "Chocolate-colored Pork Stew." The "Chocolate Color" comes from the main ingredient: Beef (or pork) blood. The meats used are the lower grade organ meats and the fattier cuts of pork. My mother loves the stuff, but refuses to make it. I tried making it once, but it came out awful... I'll have to try again when I'm feeling brave. |

Dinuguan . . .I tried making it once, but it came out awful How could you tell? By the sounds of it, that's about the only way that recipe could turn out. Then again, my Polish/Ukrainian relatives have eaten some nasty looking stuff. As long as they're still marketing steaks, roasts, chops, etc. I don't feel the need to dive deeper into cows and pigs. |

Strokizator: Not enough vinegar... the blood clotted during cooking. Sound nasty enough now? The taste was okay, but the texture was ALL wrong. By the way, any Jamaicans here? Ever hear of "Cow Cod Soup?" |
