It only took 2/3 of a year but I am finally getting around to posting some pictures of the R1 I bought back in March.

The Buell was getting a little fussy at 30,000 miles and I was spending more on parts in a month than a payment would run. So I figure what the hell? Let's try this crossplane crankshaft thing.

I still have and love the Buell. Only a buell sticker is on the back of my truck so you know where my loyalty lies!

I have yet to ride one, so I have to ask how do you like the handling compared to the stable mate?

BTW a local guy has a 2010 R1 with Two Brothers exhaust & it's my favorite exhaust note I have ever heard.

Congrats.

Nice bike! I too defected a little when i bought my kawi ninja ZX10R. Just love riding it. I put on almost 5k miles this summer. Hardly rode the buell due to a handle bar issue.

I hate to say it but IMO it handles a lot better than the buell. You rally have to muscle the XB into corners. Once there it is rock steady just heavy. The Yamaha seems to act on thoughts even though it is a heavy literbike. It flicks into corners well and holds the line. Acceleration and braking are strong as well. Still like the Buell but the R1 is a better tool.

If ya gotta ride rice, the tuning forks peeps got it goin' on...

Two of my favorite bikes I've owned are a built '84 RZ350 (GOD I'd love another one) and an '87 FZ700, 2nd year for the 5-valve Genesis motor- best midrange hit for a 4banger I've tried. IMHO they always have an interesting approach to engineering- heck, I even liked the 550 Vision back in the day.

I still dream about finding a super sano early Venture, stripping it, updating the motor to Vmax specs, then rebuilding it- the ultimate tourer-sleeper!

Weird, but somehow I've not gotten to hear the ear candy of the new Crossplane motor... gotta fix that someday.

Someday Yamaha will wise up and make a cross plane version of their R6 too. The R1 is the one Japanese repliracer I'd consider owning, thanks mainly to the non-IL4 character bestowed by the "cross-plane" crankshaft engine. Well that, and it's not a Honda.

When the cross-plane crank first came out I was with a friend who was "glove shopping" on a road trip and we stopped in a Yammy shop. The sales guy just had to start up the new R1 that they put a pipe on. That thing sounded great! I really hope they come out with an R6 version and start using it on the non-repliracer bikes. I4s have just gotten too cookie cutter for my taste regardless of how good they are.

I meant to post on this earlier, really good to see you're enjoying your new toy! Interesting comments re the handling.

Oh yeah, they sound really good. I really have to get a ride on one of these one day.

I think Yamaha have always been a little more adventurous than their direct competitors. I doubt it will happen, but I'd love to see Yamaha bring out the Tenere 1200 (270° twin) engine in a sportbike or streetfighter, or a new TRX850. Actually, a new TRX850 cafe racer would suit me down to the ground : D

I'm with you on that one Chili, I always liked the TRX, only problem was the appallingly clunky shift.

My first motorcycle was a Yamaha. You know what they say about your "first."

I also contracted for them three years in a row at the Lake George Americade as a Demo Ride Leader. They take GOOD care of their people (and you can see that in MotoGP how much the riders enjoy being with them, even after their careers are over). I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Yamaha.

That's why I replaced my 1125R with a Yamaha. I already own a BMW, so there really wasn't any other manufacturer I'd consider (unless, of course, I hit the lottery... then I'd've bought an 1190RS).
