American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Nominates GPS for International Astronautical Federation (IAF) 60th Anniversary Award.

Award Recognized an Outstanding Achievement in the Area of Space Applications for Human Benefit

On 4 October 2011, the Global Positioning System (GPS) was recognized as the recipient of the IAF 60th Anniversary Award. This one-time award recognized an outstanding achievement in the area of space applications for human benefit. The award was presented during a ceremony at the 62nd International Astronautical Congress, held October 3-l7, 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Click Video of the Award Ceremony for a long-winded but interesting presentation on GPS development history, applications and future featuring the key players in industry and government.

I'm both humbled and extremely proud that the 36 years I've worked on aerospace programs like the Space Shuttle and GPS have benefited civilians as well as our military. Because the GPS has developed to such a degree that there are now ubiquitous user friendly, inexpensive receivers we can use everyday always gives me a good feeling every time I turn on the Nav in my car.

Too cool Darryl! I didn't know you were in that field. Here I thought all this time that you were a professional Buell diagnostics expert. : D

Sparky - so I have YOU to BLAME for my complete loss of ALL my navigation skills?

Map?

Compass?

Clock?

YOU HAVE RUINED ME!

I'll tell you though, from my perspective as a pilot, going from VOR/DME to LORAN-C was dramatic but going from LORAN to GPS was MIRACULOUS!

"... professional Buell diagnostics expert", oh no. I'm retired now.

But, actually, what I'm spewing forth on these pages is mostly just an extension of what I was doing when I was in the Test Dept. before transitioning to Engineering: verify wire harness design by writing and conducting continuity, isolation and hi-pot tests and sell it to the customer. It was quite the fun job going from studying specs to crawling around spacecraft in Downey, Seal Beach and Palmdale.

Slaughter, . I know what you mean regarding the old school. Then again, I don't always carry spare batteries for my hand held GPS but I always have a map stuffed in my tank bag!
