This was always my preferred way of playing in the surf. There's too much waiting for waves in surfing and you need the jet ski to catch the big stuff. I've seen 25-30 foot sets on Maui's north shore and it shakes the earth! It's hard to fathom a 90 foot wave.

Edit: Meant to include video!

I have a bit of a purist view of surfing. ANYONE can be towed into a wave. Part of the whole experience is paddling out, waiting until the good wave comes, and paddling to catch that wave. Even if it never comes, seeing dolphins swimming 10 ft. from you, when you are in their neighborhood, is a pretty cool thing. It does take some large testes to ride those big waves though.

Ive not seen a wave larger than 8 or 10 feet, so 90' is insane to me. I'd love to see one in person.
I have no desire to surf a wave that large.

Almost every morning on my way to work I see people surfing in Kona. The biggest waves here are in the winter when there's no beaches. They got to like 20-30 feet last winter

My brother has wind surfed in Maui... that is completely insane... guess the waves weren't big enough for him in LA.

It's not just the size of the waves. Maui is located where deep water suddenly comes up to the reef very rapidly. The wave hits the reef with more speed and power. Maui also has just about the perfect winds most of the year. Winter is wave season though. The power of the ocean is just amazing.

So who has a favorite surf movie? There's two that I like.

Blue Crush is a great movie because of the photography on the water. You really get a sense of what the waves look like from a surfers perspective. They made moderate surf look huge. Lots of bikinis too. Plot was not so great.

My favorite though is In God's Hands. It's one of those movies where every time I watch it I pick up on different stuff. You also get to see surf (and windsurf) legends doing what they do.

I know this is a MC board, but... If anyone had the desire to pickup a mountain of windsurf gear cheap give me a PM. I've got probably over $15K retail worth of gear from the late 90's and early 00's that I would part with for pennies on the dollar. You pick up, I'm not going to deal with shipping.

I'll leave with this... Few did it like Robby Naish!
