I need to upgrade from my 12K dial-up.

Anyone here using either one, replies with good or bad experiences most welcome.

The area where I live these two seem to be the only choices for a faster connection.

Do a search on BroadbandReports to see what is in your area, it will even let you see real world reviews from others.

"to see what is in your area"

The two above are the only options available at this time.I have to be within 2 miles of the "hub" to get dsl and I'm 7 miles out.

I have WildBlue and there are things I really don't like.

You are limited on download amounts if you don't opt for the top tier offer, weather can make things tough when you need it the most, and getting help over the phone really depends on who you get on the phone (they always speak clear english, just some motivated to help more than others).

I have more trouble with it when the weather in WV is bad than when the weather at my house is bad. It must be where the upload Satellite dish is located.

WildBlue S T I N K S .

For all the reasons listed by Duck and many more. We just cancelled a contract with them and their customer service was sorry even in that event.

If I was paying for it, it would be gone also, however it is a perpetual Christmas present from my mother-in-law. So I will deal with whatever I get that is free!

I had Hughsnet. The internet service was unreliable and the customer service was worse.
If it rained at my house...internet down.
If it rained at Hughes HQ...internet down.

I have DirecTv and am happy with it. I can't believe they are the same company.

I use DSL through the phone company now. I am happy with it.

You are better off with snail mail than satellite.

I am in the same scenario for internet. There is another option... I got a blackberry with a data plan and tether it to my computer. It's not as fast as DSL, but way better than dial up. And the portability is really handy. There is a data limit, but I never come close to it.
