Interesting, like a sacrificial zinc cathode on a ship? |

You see a lot about using this for removing rust from old motorcycle gas tanks. It apparently works pretty well. |

Looks like rebar, the negative on the part.. I'll bet it works because the bucket is galvanized. I saw the original post on FB but can't find it now. There was some soap in the water as well. |

They just did this on the show Cafe Racer on HD Theater. |

The bucket must be none conductive, washing soda works best,I use baking soda. |

As long as bucket is not grounded, it may not matter. The circuit goes from positive lead(s) to rebar to soda-water bath, to rusty part to wire suspending it to negative lead(s) What amperage setting, and how for how long? Neat stuff Harley! |

Plastic is the way to go for the tank. Stainless tank or rods are taboo..........makes a poison(!) and a very toxic waste. The Arm&Hammer Super Washing Soap solution is non toxic, but will dry your hands out. Your lawn will love the iron rich waste water. My charger was showing 5 amps(ideal,I guess) and at 4 hours it was done...... 3 gallons of warm water and 1 cup of Arm&Hammer. YMMV.I ran the mag bracket and muffler in the same mix(now cold),overnight...and the charger was only showing 3 amps.Still worked great. Apparently there is a ratio of the amps you can get, depending on the size of the part, electrode distance and the amount of wash solution and temperature. Trickle chargers will let you down. It works, line of sight, between the electrode and the part..so I used two electrodes to get both sides of the head in one session. You can use as many electrodes as you want, to surround the part. One guy built a plywood framework and made a huge pool out of it(1,600 gallons) with a large sheet of plastic. Stuck electrodes around the perimeter and de rusted an entire car trailer frame! Probably would have been cheaper to simply sand blast it. Gas tanks can be done, but you have to shield the electrode from touching anything in the tank that would ground it.You're still going to have to put pea gravel in it and shake a lot to remove the black oxide residue. Carbon rods for the electrodes work the best............they don't get gunked up and last nearly forever. There is a lot of misinformation on the web about this with unproven suggestions and solutions that will hurt you.Don't try to reinvent this....just stick with the basics..plastic bucket,re-bar electrodes,12 volt power and Arm&Hammer soap. I got most of my info from an old gray beard country boy hippie. Those ol boys know their stuff! The part will come out of the solution black/ugly.You will have to scrub off the residue when done, but it comes off very easy with a Scotch-Brite pad. As long as the NEGATIVE clip is on the part to clean, there will be no iron degradation....it only eats the rust.Reverse the polarity and you will destroy your part!I'm going to get some carbon rods and do the block in a 55 gallon plastic barrel this Winter..I'll post the results.......... |

So 5A draw wight the charger set on 10A or 50A supply setting. "Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soap". Got it. My brain had recorded the arm and hammer part and substituted baking soda for it. Sounds like phosphorus in the soap may be turning to phosphoric acid and then turning iron oxide into iron phosphate, the black stuff. If that's the case, the black may be a durable paintable finish, but only if light surface rust to begin with (wire brush loose stuff first). Just a guess, could be totally wrong. |

My charger is a 6 amp unit and the other charger I used... only reduced the load on the first charger. You could put 50 amps to it and probably yield the same draw....just a guess. The bucket of soup is like a battery. The black oxide on the surface can be wiped off with your fingers.....so not very paintable. DuPont's Pool Care pH Increaser is 100% sodium carbonate and can be also be used.I guess that's what makes it all work. Baking soda is not "exactly" the same stuff and probably more expensive. |

One more thing. Do this out doors!! It makes hydrogen gas. I don't think you want that gas collecting in an area and getting a stray spark...... |

Phosphric acid is what gives Coke its Bite Ice machine cleaner or OSPHO is inhibited phosphoric acid Check your body shop suppliers for OSPHO and any HVAC supplier Johnstone , Grainger etc |
