For RC's!!!

As a kid it started with the Frog, an RC10, a 1/12th scale Cox .049 GTP then an RC10T. Later I got a 1/8th scale nitro Ofna Monster Blazer and nitro 1/10th F-1. They were all sold before I moved down south and settled down, as they say.

It all started again soon after getting my stepson some AirHogs helis. They led to the purchase of this cool little Walkera.

The baby then got a micro ATV and the stepson a micro Buggy. That led to my purchasing this Exceed 1/16th scale.

Lastly, being a bit envious of the neighbors hopped-up HPI and Associated 1/18th scale cars, I made an effort to learn all I could from the very new landscape of electric RC from where I had left. I got this beauty today.

The neighbors 1/18th cars were too small and twitchy, and I thought that old .049 1/12th scale was the perfect size for just bombing around the street. This is an M-Class (1/12th or commonly referred to as 1/10th mini) Active Hobby A210DS that is imported and sold through Ofna as a JL12E. It is pretty quick as is, even with a stock-style 23T 540 motor, and was very affordable. I consider it an early Christmas present. I'm not a fan of the Suzuki Swift body, but that'll be an easy fix.

Ah memories... the scar on my right hand index finger started twitching at the mention of an .049 motor... a permanent reminder of a Cox 3-blade prop Mustang starting attempt gone wrong. Do they still use nitromethane based fuel?

Nevermind... I see those are electric. Don't mind me, it's just advancing old age.

I have a drawer full of trophies from RC racing from years ago. I started with the Grasshopper, then the Hornet, then found a lot of cars, controllers, and batteries for sale. At one point I had 7 cars. A couple 1/12 scale carpet cars, Hi rider Vette, 2 Blackfoots, 2 RC-10 buggies. I still have an RC-10L. Most got traded around for some different RC-10s, and I can't remember what. A few years ago, I had a Savage SS with those HUGE Jumbo Kong tires (7in. dia?)and a big ol gas motor to run it. It stood about 16in tall and ran about 30mph. A real ankle breaker. I still have a brand new, in the box, Mr. Pringles deluxe hydroplane (MRP I believe) boat sitting on a shelf for when the kid gets a couple years older. I also have a brand new 4 channel for my next plane. I'm kinda of a dork with these things. It's why I stay out of hobby shops. I really dig those little copters too: Or the 1/4 scale buggies: Or the mini electrics........................

I have a Team Associated SC10 that has been built since last December sitting on the shelf. For some reason I'm not wanting to spend the money to get it rolling????? My bike always takes priority...? I might be willing to sell it, it'll come with 3 free trackdays at Trackside in Brookfield.

I used to fly RC ~25 years ago. About a month ago there was a group of guys flying electrics in the park behind my house and I decided to walk over and see what the current stuff looked like. Things have really changed. Smaller everything and electric planes are giving fairly impressive performance. They all had "combat" planes built from pink styrofoam sheet. The guy I was talking to put one in the air and held the controller in front of me. He watched me for about 30 seconds and just walked over by his friends behind me. It all came back quick, loops, rolls, even managed an inverted turn. Managed a controlled return to earth. Since then I've had this itch I really want to scratch!

One of the guys had a couple of micro helicopters too. Rotor span about 10 inches (single rotor/no fly bars unlike the one in your pic). Incredible flight envelop in a very small space. He was hovering inverted scraping the rotor tips on the pavement! Then he showed me how well it would hover hands off. Nothing like things were 25 years ago!

My Dad is 66 years old and just starting to fly RC planes. I had to install a program on my Mom's computer to interface with his controller so he could practice without destroying a real plane. I can tell you one thing from "flying" on the computer, though .... I'm no good at it!!

Does many wasted hours playing the "RC Revenge" video game count? : )

Fun game, that.

I have a whole pile of electric choppers that i fly inside the house. They are micro choppers and are very tiny and are affected by wind over 6 miles an hour. I have a $3000.00 gas chopper that collects dust now that i don't fly it anymore. Last year i built a Toyota high lux truck that has 4 wheel steering and a 3 speed tranny and is 4x4. It is pretty neat and the neighbors yard has fresh wood mulch. I'm going to have take it over and wheel through there mulch and the rocks out front.

Well, my glory with the new car was short lived. While walking home from the parking lot with the car trolling along ahead of me, it shut off right in front of my driveway. I picked it up and was about to carry it inside when I heard crackling then saw smoke. The motor, ESC, and power switch are all completely fried. The status of the receiver is unknown. I'm just glad the chassis didn't melt. This was just after a front wheel came loose and darted it into a curb breaking the cheap PVC body. The wife says no fixee 'cause it's too much money. I can get a programmable brushless set up for $80 and a proper body for $25-$35. Oh well.

I've never gotten into the planes or bigger helis. My dad got me a Kadet Seniorita one Christmas, and while it was a nice gesture, I sold the kit at full retail. I fly them really well in simulators (at least the 4 channels and jets), but then I get bored and fly wilder and wilder until I crash. Most guys seem to have a fleet of planes, most in various stages of repair. That looks too expensive. I really like some of the smaller EP's, like the Hyperfly Hyperflea, but it's out of my budget for now. Those flying hydrofoils look cool, too...but I can just see myself dunking one in the middle of a pond.

My Walkera heli was trouble free for two years, then recently I broke a pinion, a blade, the batteries are done for, and the state of the engines is unknown. It's all cheap repairs but it all adds up quick. I'd like to do a brushless on that so it can handle a little wind out doors. It's ideal for indoor flying as-is.
