Just how much of a dog are the 4 cylinder versions? They are a lot cheaper and this one would be destined for a swap down the road anyway...

4...6...they're all dogs. It's a big square box, geared for torque lol. My 4.0 six cylinder YJ runs like a top, good state of tune...but still slow. My 4.0 XJ Cherokee is a rocket by comparison! They're the same year and same engine. One has an actual sloped windshield and some semblance of aerodynamics...the other...not so much.

The four isn't going to win any races...but it's not "I'm unsafe to merge" slow either. And that old four is absolutely bomb-proof.

Hmm... The deciding factor is price. I can buy a ratty six cylinder that runs good for cheap or a nice one with a ton of mileage (not a deal breaker) for cheap.

Or, I can buy a nice, low mileage 4 cylinder for cheap...

My Honda is on life support after 250k and definitely has a wrist pin noise...

Get the one with the best body/frame.

The drivetrain is easily replaceable, the rust/rot is a bitch.

+1

Which is why I bought my XJ. Totally rust-free, no bodywork ever. 229k miles. Put one used piston in it, been running like a champ since February.

$400 truck : )

Thumper, what year is the four cyl? I nearly bought a new one in the mid '90s, the four cyl versions were the only one's that could be had with 4.10 factory gears at that time. It would make a great swap to the six with those gears.

I took a worn out 2.5 that was in an '86 XJ...bored it +.020 and used Mahle 10.00 pistons...had the rods shot peened, magnafluxed and polished...crank turned, balanced and nitrided..head ported, 1.94/1.55 stainless swirl polished tulip valves, triple springs, .553 lift cam, roller rockers, headers, weber progressive carb, crank trigger ignition...it made 139 hp and when I pushed the blue button it made 189...it would turn 7800 rpm effortlessly.

The torque at 2,500 rpm from my 406 cubic inch SBC trumps your 189 hp at 7,800 rpm!

A few years back my nephew's jacked and stacked Toyo rock crawler on 35"s went through a deep swampy slough at 8,000 rpms throwing water and mud all over bouncing from bank to bank. When all of the mud and water ran back into the hole, me and my CJ on 33"s idled through it crawling up the bank at the end effortlessly.

He yelled at me "You made that look easy!" I yelled back "You made it look hard!"

It took a while but I learneded it too.

Got sick of dumping money into a 6, that's why the V8 is going in. Unlike the 6, this engine is getting a snorkel.

My 4.6 stroker 6 does pretty well, and it was cheap, the only downfall is I have to run mid grade fuel, but it still gets 15 MPG with 35's and 4.56's.

I built a 4.5 for my MJ (Comanche pickup)..a lot of good Hesco parts went in that motor too..I sold the truck when I realized the rust monster had it in it's grasp...the more rust I fixed, the more I found...the guy that bought it swapped the complete powertrain into a nice 2 door XJ.

It had a hybrid D-44 hi pinion front and an 8.8 rear with 5.13's and ARBs on 35's. AW4 with a rock box...I loved how easy to work on those rigs were.

I guess my ambition for building power was always aimed at my former drag and dirt track race cars.

I'm lazy about my Jeep because I do not make money racing it and I have no bad feelings about parking it for a year or so between trail events.

The stock 406 in this Jeep is kind of like a jet engine in a dragster. It will probably never wear out, and it is going to take a major screw up to kill it.

Royal Blue. It is an awesome trail place, mud holes and all kinds of hill climbs and trails and such.

I have to get a hold of the trail authorities to see what the newest rules are. Last I heard you need a permit and it is closed during certain times like hunting season and when the military are doing war games.

I hope I have removed just about everything I would run into a tree or rock with.... I hope!

front fenders
front bumper
rear bumper
fender flares

and when it started looking hairy... we removed the top and doors.

now I just need some rock sliders!

Ok It's been a while since I contributed to this thread. Since the wedding I've been able to get my engine installed for the FINAL time. I've got the transmission and transfer case installed and I'm starting to put all the little bits and pieces together now. I'm hoping to have it running in about a month.

So I'm in the garage talking to one of my buddies and he's asking my what I'm doing for rims and tires. The conversation turns to me mentioning that the Jeep has a Ford bolt pattern for the wheels. He says he has a set of wheels that he's never going to do anything with and was wondering if they would fit my Jeep. What the hell let's give it a try...........

My new rims.....

They're stock rims from a 2006 Mustang GT convertible. When my buddy bought his GT he brought it home and put aftermarket wheels on it. I got all 4 wheels with 20 miles on them for a Benjamin......

What ya think???

If you like it, I love it!

Keep it on da CHEAP!!

I'm looking forward to the ride/drive report.

I'm about to go to Pick and Pull to get a air box out of a Buick Century and route it thru the cowl.

On board air is also bouncing around the brain.

Jeep looks like it may be waiting for a bit, a tow truck dropped off something with a 4.2L inline 6 made by the same folks that made the Jeeps. Hint: The hood hinges in the front. The most recognizable one has a licorice dispenser in the overhead console.

The ol' Honda's making a racket and the oil light flickers occasionally at idle when hot... I quart of Lucas has quieted it down for the time being, but I'm looking for another used Honda.

I was going to drop an LSx or Hemi in it, but might enjoy it stock with some mag wheels...

"We're Not Worthy!"

The fish bowl of AMC. I think they were headed back to Nash territory with that design. Cool car though.

I had to sideline my Jeep for now. Too much to do for a one armed paper hanger in a wind storm. (but it did not have to move too far)
