New Jersey has put a tax lein on my bank account. Took all my money. I collected unemployment for 2 years and the payment was garnished out of that. When that ended I was screwed so I applied for welfare. (single guy, could not get any benefits) so I finally get a part-time job, barely making payments on bike and pastdue rent. Last week I get a letter from child support...OOPS.. I think to myself, I better make payments asap!! I go to call them but there is no number for their office and re-reading the letter...it is basically a heavy warning to my employer, saying they BETTER start paying my support or they will go after them in court!! WTF?!?! OK... so now I am pissed, my employer never mentioned this to me and I figured well, I just got this letter so I should have some time. There is only a fax number on the letter so I can't call them and talk about sending an E-check from my bank account. So, today, Sat. 4-5 days after I recieved the letter I get email from my bank stating my funds have dropped to ZERO! I got online and see there is 450.00 missing. Account has zero funds. I call the bank and they tell me the State of New Jersey has put a tax lien of some sort on my account for past due child support. Come on man! It is not like I have a kid that depends on my money. He had been emancipated 2 years ago! He is 25 now. They screwed ME out of 4 years of payments that I didn't need to pay because he WASN't really attending college (but they said he was) AND it wasn't like I was hiding. I was out of work for a few weeks, then a few more to get caught up... my payment is only 60.00 freaking bucks a week. IS THAT GONNA SAVE THE NEW JERSEY BUDGET?!?!?!? You got to be kidding me!! Now I have overdrafts to pay. Isn't this against the law or did Crispy Creme change that? And I was just starting to like this state again.

Sometime I think I should go to mexico and comeback as an illegal. (but I too dam white!!)

FYI: I Only didn't pay when I wasn't working... which happened 5-6 times or more thruout the 25 years of paying and for different lengths of time. I could have gone to court and got the payment reduced to the minimum (120 down to 35) each time, but never did so that added up to quite a bit when I wasn't working over the years. I should have got it reduced but I felt it was cheating my kid out of something for some reason. (I am such a sometimes)
So I ended up with arrears and even though the "support" part is done with, the arrear's still need to be paid and I know this and intend to pay it all. But to put a lien on my bank account?? After 25 years of paying and NOT hiding they go and do this... I totally lost faith in this state of new efing jersey. I live here.. and it truly does BLOW.

I'm certainly not trying to make light of your problems but if you ever get on the wrong side of the IRS you will see what government will really do to you.

The bank gave me a number to call monday morning. According to the bank, they took 100.00 as a fee then remaining is for payment. I don't know if I am gonna get any of the money back. I guess I gotta think worst case scenario. Really burns me up though. I can still open another bank account or stop direct deposit and cash my check at a check cashing place. NOT to hide from paying support... but just to be in control of my finances. At the check cashing place I can buy a 60.00 money order for 1.00 + a stamp and mail it to them.

What if I had made promise's to pay my phone and rent and electric and bike payment because they were overdue?? It would have crippled me.

Sifo,.. that guy from the Taxmasters commercials scares the crap outta me. I should probably call them sometime too.

Ya know. I shouldn't chime in but seeing as I went through the whole child support thing myself why don't you ask your son to return the money? You did say he is 25, correct? Seriously, he's a grown f'in man. Does he feel entitled at his age? You shouldn't feel any guilt or shame at this point. The time to cut the umbilical chord was long ago.

And some people on here would say it is such a privilege to have to work a minimum wage job, be unemployed or recieve ANY form of assistance...

I will not even post up about my issues... I just feel very fortunate to have made enough on my last job (Army contract) to not be visiting the food bank... yet.

yea... the bank people were hard to understand. I almost thru my phone out the window. As far as my kid,.. I started the procedure for emancipation when I wasn't getting the college transcripts that were suppossed to be mailed to me. I assumed he was still in school and the state people said that to me as well. they were annoyed that I wanted proof he was in college. And when the mother couldn't produce the documents, a court date was issued and it the then, finally..., that the actual child support stopped. This money that I pay now goes back to the state and is for what "I" still owe. (arrears)

I wouldn't ask my son for that other money, if anyone it be his mother because she was the one receiving the money. But the judge did credit my account some. (not enough but better than nothing)

I have taken jobs at Einstien Bagels, Saladworks, WholeFoods, Wendy's Arby's when I needed to.

I have worked various crap tastic jobs in food service... and I worked an 'ok' job totalling four years as a cab driver.

With 8 years in my scientific specialty and being 44 years old now, I would be applying for jobs at coffee houses if I thought I might actually GET the job.

Problem is that around 2008 those jobs pretty much dissapeared because there are so many professionals vying for the same minimum wage work.

I hope because I am studying three times a week at a local Starbucks and am getting to know all the employees there that they just might give me a shot by Jan 1st.

Not too sure what is going to happen, but I do KNOW that right now my volunteer job is the only thing keeping me sane... well that and the bike and the fact that I never have to live through a Wisconsin winter again.

And NO, I am not on the pity pot, I have no use to waste my energy feeling sorry for myself... just saying a lot of good hard working people are going through this same sh*t.

I am hopefull, because after twenty years of having between 60K to 30K in medical debt, I am down to 2.6K in medical and 2K in back taxes... if the IRS were to get my checking account money I would be homeless again in a heartbeat.

I am paying them 20 a month and the hosptial 25 a month. If I were to make 2/3 of my Army job, I should be able to get out of debt in the next year or two...

I have been in far far worse situations. Knowing I have friends out there that would do just about anything to help matters to me the most, since I have no family of my own to help....

IMHO,.. that guy he has a girly adolescent whiney voice that makes me want to punch him in the face. (that song) And I really hate those whiney boy singers that whine and bitch about thier lost girlfriends. And the song reminds me of that U2 song. As a songwriter he should have done something that change that. BUT... No offence to him or anyone that like's him. I don't keep up with new bands much because I hate being disapointed. I am just a tad older than you. I am a disgruntled former songwriter/musician that got nowhere.

:I'm certainly not trying to make light of your problems but if you ever get on the wrong side of the IRS you will see what government will really do to you."

The Obama Care bill for HealthCare.... is administered and fed personal information for accounts, assets and identity DIRECTLY to the IRS. The EMR/EHR is not for 'quality of care' as the same mistakes made in pen, are indeed made in digital format (and in many instances compounded by the addition of technology) It gives the government LIEN power to your property the moment you go inpatient.
enjoy

(you still havent read that bill ?!?!? Best hope the whole thing is repealled - I am betting it wont)
