We are going down to the gap for a bike trip and were wondering if anyone could recommend a decent place to rest our heads and butts after some good riding days. Something with kitchen is preferred and not right in the mountains. Our wives are coming with and have shopping needs during our riding days We have Monday the 17th booked at the Deal's gap resort already, gotta kick the tree of shame Thanks folks |

I always stay at the Ridgetop Motel in Bryson City. I don't think any of their rooms have kitchen facilities though. Give 'em a call. http://www.ridgetopmotel.com/ |

There are several great places around- Fontana Village on NC28 is good, but more fancy is the Tapoco Lodge just down the hill from Deal's Gap- historic, beautiful, newly renovated, etc. Iron Horse Lodge is good peeps too- go to the Deal's Gap website & Killboy, do some surfing... Wifeys shopping? OK, actually this might be the best option: Check out "Brother's Cove" cabins, super LUXE, on a great little backroad between Pigeon Forge and Walland, either Walden's Creek drive in Sevier Co. or Miller's Cove in Blount Co., same little backroad... my GF's daughter stayed there a few years back, they were VERY nice, many of the cabins were built on land so steep you'd think a Skycrane had dropped them in! Be careful there- the grades are VERY steep! I'd love to stay there again sometime... |

I would recommend Townsend. We have stayed in a couple of beautiful resort hotels there with indoor pools and such, good local eateries, and Maryville (shopping proper) is only about fifteen to twenty miles out. All nice roads. Easy reach for the Dragon, Cherohala, Gatlinburg, Sevierville, and even Knoxville. |

What Vern said, basically the standard tourist travel route on 321, just down the road from what I'd mentioned in Walland. If you can research "East Miller's Cove" (Blount" and "Walden's Creek" (Sevier) you'll see what I mean. IMHO it would be your best choice: Very little tourist traffic until you hit 321 either in Walland or Pigeon Forge... turn left out of the Brother's Cove development for the riding, turn right for the ladie's shopping and stuff in Pigeon Forge. A good riding buddy lives out there off E. Miller's Cove, showed me this back way to/from Pigeon Forge a few years ago. The road is definitely a 30MPH or less affair, nice once you've been through once or twice. If interested, a thorough Google/Mapquest/GPS setup would be prudent. It's one of my fave backroads around here. |

Might try hidden springs also. http://www.hiddenspringsresort.com/ The wife and I have stayed there every year for the past 4 years before we moved here permantely. Just down the road from Dollywood and the main drag in Pigeon Forge. And then about ten minutes grom Gatlinburg which has TONS of shopping. |
