I've been checking into getting one of the cameras. Just wanted to see if anybody had experience with them, what they thought, ease of use, picture quality plus a recommend model and/or package set up
They are nice. I have two now, one is a bit temper-mental, the other has been very solid.
They are tough, but I've proved they can be broken.
Video quality is very good, use the 720p-60h setting when using on the bike, it helps rid the wavy video issues you see sometimes.
You will want to tighten up the mounting a bit to help with solid video and to get the best audio. I put down a piece of masking tape into the mounting base, then slide in the clip mount. (will make more sense when you have one in front of you)
I have one that I use for the track. I love it, nothing cooler then having video of yourself. You can learn a lot from the videos you shoot. Get the 1080 motorsports one. The 1080 can shoot 60fps, so this helps with the speed... I also suggest you get the LCDbacpac. Get this so that you dont have to guess if the camera is mounted straight/correctly. And if you do trackdays, I also suggest on getting another battery or buying a car charger for it. A 16gb sd card is plenty big to capture an entire day at the track.
I have one of the non HD models and it works good and is easy enough to use. The sound is worthless but the video looks good. It does eat batteries though so make sure you have some good rechargeables. As I have never used any others I have nothing to compare it to.
I have the Hero 960. When you have a good, vibration free location, the picture is terrific. Any amount of vibration and you get a lot of Jello-Cam. Sound isn't THAT awful, but you have to be smart about where you put it and if you have the open or closed back in place.
I had one of first models and it was pure garbage. It would eat a set of very expensive batteries in 12 minutes!! And rechargeable batteries are a joke. I ended up buying the contour hd wearable camcorder and it is fantastic......It has it's own rechargeable battery pack and twin laser's so you can get it pointing the right way at any time. And the added benefit of of an sd card slot. very easy to use even with gloves and gear on.
I looked at the GoPro Hero and the Drift HD170 Stealth Camera. For my purposes the HD 170 Stealth was a better choice, because of the on-camera display screen, the slow-mo feature, the 4+ hours of record time, and the way one could adjust the lens to make the video horizon match the real horizon. I'm satisfied with my purchase. Here's a link to their website. Link to Drift HD170 Stealth
I have a Contour GPS. I can attest to how tough it is - I had it mounted on the left pod, and lowsided (on the left side of course) and did a pretty good job of grinding it down... still worked fine. Excellent picture quality.
Downsides: software and firmware are finicky. The GPS tracking function does not work well at track speeds. Sound not in sync with picture. Batteries are hit and miss (I've had two fail within one or two uses) The camera DOES NOT work as advertised. I found the best way to use it is to just download Quicktime video directly and avoid the "Storyteller" software, then the video was fine. The GoPro is much more user-friendly and simple to use.
The vids I posted all have the sound at factory settings, haven't really had any issues with it.
Only time I get a pop is if I run over a big bump. I get one pop at the .17 mark. And I get just a touch of reverb or something when I'm really winding it up.
Anyone care to share how to change the sound settings? My gopro sounds like crap. It rattles and pops constantly. I have already put tape on the mounts. It is rock solid. I thought I found the source of the rattling. I thought it was the shutter button rattling, so I put a rubber band around the camera to keep a little tension on the button. It did not help. I have read every last word of the owner's manual on the gopro website, but found nothing about adjusting sound quality.
Skip the first 6 minutes, just waiting for everyone at the gas station before I got rolling. Skip to about 12 minutes or so and it gets a little better, but I got stuck behind a car and bicycle. At about the 21 minute mark, we finally got free. Click the link to watch on youtube for the HD 1080 one. It's very clear, but the audio is not true, it does not capture the bass at all. I did tape some cotton over the mic openings to deaden the sound a little and get rid of some of the clicking. I also have a vacuum plug over the on/off button on the front of the housing. I use the solid back only.
