The reasons for the slow sales are many, the first, as we've noted numerous times, are import duties on bikes, adding about 30% to the price and that's before consumption and value-added taxes. Why doesn't the USA add the same percentage of Import Duties, and Consumption and Value-added Taxes to imports from China? |

I run into this all of the time. We manufacture and export equipment to many foreign countries. More times than not there are significant import duties. Sometimes if believe that we are suckers here in the USA. We do not tax imports but most every other country that we work with have significant import taxes or a VAT imposed. |

It is sad that our gov. promotes foreign companies at the expense of domestics. Electronics, automotive, motorcycles, these industries are all victims to greedy lobbyists and legislators. |

the REASON for slow sales is a customer with a 690 beacon, a stable job with 10 years experience, a house, and a second income to the house cant get financed to buy the new XLFXSTWGLTUCHCVO thingamohog. if you cant get them financed, you go to cash sales, or 30% down..... um yeah. Glad I got out when I did. Saw the writing on the wall in 2009; and by all accounts it aint back to 2006 levels yet..... And this recession lags until AFTER the election - too uncertain as to who is doing what and where the next tax will fall. |

I didn't know that the average Chinese motorcycle buyer was " a customer with a 690 beacon, a stable job with 10 years experience, a house, and a second income to the house cant get financed to buy the new XLFXSTWGLTUCHCVO thingamohog." |

Court... wait a minute, are you saying people expect to ride the things? I'd think that once sales "took off" in China, you could rake in the $$$ by selling motorcycle trailers and organizing motorcycle "events" for the "riders." |

wooops, damnit, I thought this was a nother rag on how Harley was missing the youth crowd and their new batch of fat couch cruisers and how they missed the marketing again. my bad (however the credit fiasco stands - max credit vs down vs bike on a new finance note is killing the market) |

In China, aren't most of the bikes 250cc and smaller? What does Harley have that competes in that segment? This applies to India too, by the way. |

Jaimec - that was the original implied question of my post. Seems like the wizards of Milwaukee would have done some homework to identify these kinds of issues and have developed strategies or go/no-go decisions before going "oh shit...we didn't account for this....". But again, I'm not a H-D insider so can only question what is on the surface.... |

Jaime, they're selling a special, sleeved-down version of the FLHTCUI that displaces 250 cc, but the engine is made in Korea by Hyosung... |

You get charged a yearly tax on the CC's. $125 is a lot cheaper than $883 or $1200... |
