Sorry for posting this on the Quick Board, but I could use some quick advice (hurriedly trying to get the S3 together in time for a big event tomorrow). I disassembled the fuel tank for repair & paint a few months ago and upon reassembly today I discovered that the rubber fuel cap boot actually shrank. I managed to stretch it enough to install it, but now I have to really shove the cap in to seat it, and I can't turn the locking cam at all.

I've been trying to stretch it out by hand but it's not doing much good. The nearest replacement part is in Reno, NV, and I really want to get this bike out tomorrow morning.

Is there any way to "recondition" the rubber in short order? Heat it gently? Soak it in gas or another solvent? Or is this piece beyond salvage?

Thanks in advance for your quick input!

brake fluid will swell rubber but IDK if it would work?
I'd probably boil water pop it in soften it up and stretch it a bit.

I've tried the gas soak to no avail. I think it is toast - sorry

Yeah, me too, after paint. I splashed a bit of fuel on mine as I filled the tank and just set the gas cap on there and it went back to normal. The nut on the bottom of the cap can be eased off a bit until the shrinkage stops, you'll notice it gets a little sloppy when the rubber seal goes back to normal, so re-adjust the nut at that point, maybe squirt a little tri-flow or wd40 in the main pin for the cap and make sure things move freely while you're at it.
