I need some new safety boots for work and since I'm riding most days now, I thought I'd look for something that would do both rather than cart a pair of steel caps around. Looking for a boot with a safety toe, ankle coverage, side zip and waterproof I found these two: http://www.magnumboots.com/us/boots/professional/1 64/stealth-force-80-sz-ct-wpi/ http://www.ridgeoutdoors.com/_product_65677/7105CT Z_Blackhawk_Zipper_with_Composite_Toe I found some earlier threads where Badwebbers were impressed with the Magnums, any more comments or thoughts would be welcome. I have tried a pair of Magnum Vipers and they were very comfortable, so I assume the Stealth model should be similar. Anybody tried the Ridge boots? They are a little cheaper, I've seen a few bike shops stock them and, Ridge market them as a motorcycle boot as well as a safety/tactical style boot. Anybody tried both? cheers, chili |

Chili-This is what I wear for work(sometimes, when not scheduled in surgery) and on the M2. They are light weight, breathable and VERY H2O proof. They get an 9/10. The Magnum's where a little to pricey for me, and the Rocky's seemed a good alternative for a very similar boot. http://www.rockyboots.com/Product-Details/4375/160 0FQ0002173/Rocky-AlphaForce-Zipper-Waterproof-Duty --Boot/ They are, however, not steel or composite toe. Some of their other zippered "duty" boots might be. (Message edited by m2statz on September 07, 2011) |

When I worked in a factory and was required to wear steel toes I loved these boots. They've got thick padding around the ankles and were very comfortable. http://www.zappos.com/dr-martens-2295-rigger-black -ind-greasy?si30764=&channel=27&mr:referralID=13f0 4a3c-d966-11e0-be22-001b2166becc I still wear my old ones and my local place stopped carrying them. I'm glad you brought this up because they told me they no longer made them so I didn't bother looking, now I know they're out there. Of course then they paid $100 dollars of it now it's all on me. |

I wear Magnum's but I prefer DM's. (Simply cannot justify the price of DM's as I rarely wear work boots - I'm a clerical worker) DM's were all the rage when I was younger. 13 hole cherry reds (w/steel toecaps) for motorcycling/going to Upton park on a W/E. Chris C |

I had a pair of Magnums for about 6-8mnths and destroyed them. The final straw was the zippers busting on both boots. Before them I had a pair of H&H engineer boots for about 4years. They also had side zips but they never broke. The only reason I stopped wearing them was because I wore them in my dad's chicken houses a few times. You can never get them clean after that. Got a pair of Corcoran boots that also lasted over 4 years. I'm hard on boots. I wear them every single day. The H&H made it through college, a year in a paper mill, numerous oil rigs, and life on the farm. The Magnums busted after a few months in the ship yard. The Corcorans made it through my remaining years in the shipyard (though I had to replace the soles twice) and a year in a chemical plant. I nearly got another pair when they got beyond repair. But I found a pair of Rockys that I really liked and decided to give 'em a go. So far they've been really good boots. Unfortunately, either HH doesn't make the side zip engineer boots anymore or they're just impossible to find. I really wish I could get another pair. I absolutely loved those boots. If you can live without the side zip these Corocorans are awesome boots. http://www.corcoranandmatterhorn.com/ItemDisplay.a sp?Style=XCS2525&CategoryID=39 |

Oh and HH Boots are not the same as "Double H" Boots, which are western boots. |

Crikey Mate! Can't you step out back and peel a crock to make your own? LOL!!!! But croc-skin safety boots are soooooooo 2010 I love Docs too - I've had green ones, cherry reds, and a pair of Doc shoes over the years. I currently have a pair of non-steel cap Docs that I wear pretty much everyday to the office, and a pair of Cat steel caps I use for site. The Docs are taking a beating from being worn so much and and the Cat's are really overdue for replacement (and not the best bike boot, the toes are really chunky). Because I where the Docs so often for work I tend not to wear them outside of work anymore too Steel cap Docs are an option, but they do cost a heap here. I'd like to try the tactical-style boots as something different, and the side zip and waterproof features would be convenient M2statz - Thanks for the tip on the Rocky's, I had seen the brand in one of my searches but wasn't sure of the quality. There is a composite toe version of the Alpha's so I will look into them. I had a pair of Magnums for about 6-8mnths and destroyed them. The final straw was the zippers busting on both boots. That's the one thing I've seen commented about the Magnums, they're not the toughest boot around. I will check out the Corocorans too. |

I'd check out Red Wing too, they're the best and most comfortable work boots I've ever had. Got just under 5 years of the first pair I had, a hiking boot style. I replaced them with a more traditional work boot. Not quite as comfortable, but after 3 years I'd say they've got at least 3 years left, maybe more if I'd take care of them. |

Yeah, my Docs are not mc boots... steel toe is way way too high on them to ride with them... they are also a bit heavy. I also have some Rocky gore-tex boots that I wore for my winter trip and they held up great. Do not wear any tights tucked into them though in a rain storm. They may be water proof but they also will hold three inches of water inside the boots too. But all in all pretty happy cause the low profile is easy to ride with. |

Red Wings is my fave. Ask to look through the catalog and select "made in USA" that meets your size and specs. Then see how long they last. They are darned near as cheap as wall mart boots in terms of cost per year and your feets don't hurt. That alone is worth the ticket price! |

I've been wearing these for a couple of years now. They are a lot more durable than motorcycle specific boots, very comfortable and a lot less expensive, as well. http://www.weinbrennerusa.com/dspNavCategory.cfm?r ootID=1&catID=9&prodid=327 |

If you're looking at zippered boots make sure the zippers are the real-deal. I'm talking heavy duty. You can also get these for lace up boots to have zip-up ease. I haven't used them myself. But they're not very expensive and if they tear up they don't ruin the boots and can be easily replaced.

Thanks for the link Crusty, the Thorogoods were another one I wasn't sure about the quality. Turns out the Ridge boots aren't waterproof, so they're out. I'm thinking I'll go with the Rocky's or the Thorogoods, or maybe the Magnums. They all have a composite toe/side zip/waterproof model, all somewhere around the $115 mark. I've never had the "tactical" style of boot before and I'd like to give them a try. |

Are the 8" boots not too short? Do your pants legs ride up over the top of the boot? I'm liking the idea of zip up tactical boots. I'm tired as hell of the velcro cup on my old tired Sidi's coming open all the time on the S2T's shift linkage. |

I am really interested in the rocky boots m2statz posted. I really like my insulated rockys. They are too thick to ride with but those look better. |

Are the 8" boots not too short? Do your pants legs ride up over the top of the boot? Most of my jeans/cargo's are fine with my boots that are 8", they're ok with the boots I have that are 5"/6". I just got some Icon jeans which are quite long but perfect when you're sitting on the bike and easily cover my ankle and 5" boots. To me 8" boots will provide some ankle protection when riding but are comfortable enough to walk in all day. |

In my experience, 8" boots allow my jeans to pull up when I ride. Disclaimer - I am the definition of Lanky. 6'4" with a 34" inseam and a size 13 foot. I wear an 8" boot now, but it typically exposes about 2" of ankle when my riding pants pull up. I will be searching for some 10s...or biting the bullet and going full-on riding-boot instead of the tacticals that I wear now. |

I own a pair of Oxtar riding boots, but haven't worn them since buying my Red Wings (model 2426). Had them 2 years now.. wear them every day for aviation maintenance, deployments, riding, etc. I oil them regularly and at this rate they'll last me 20 years. Definitely worth the $250 initial purchase. I've only owned one pair of Magnums, but they were trash after 6 months. I actually prefer the quick laces on the Red Wings to the zippered sides on the Magnums. I also have a pair of Irish setters. Owned by Red Wing but unfortunately made in China. They're not quite up to RW standards, but still a solid pair of boots. |
