You think you are screwed? You see my power steering pump and the steering box laying on the front axle. I have to find a place to mount all of that stuff. I think it might be important to the well being of the Jeep and myself.

Jim,

I know where those parts may be found near my place but I don't have time to get to them. I can however, look into getting the information of the salvage yard to you. They ship stuff like everyone else does. I'll shoot you a PM later today when I locate their information.

Most likely, the steering box (if it is a Saginaw) is the most common box in the world, used on an amazing number of GM and Dodge/Jeep products for years.

If the problem is concern about if the pump has the guts to steer fat tires...usually it isn't the pump that has the problem...the frame can crack from the strain, and the steering box can wear rapidly.

The cure is "Hydro assist". It is a fairly easy matter to drill and tap the steering box to fit hoses to power the assist ram. The ram is a common double acting hydraulic ram that can be sourced easily with a little "looking"...Google "Jeep hydro assist"....if you go to Pirate 4 x 4 and browse their KILLER tech section, everything you could possibly need to know is there....another possible source for tech (especially for WWR and his TJ which shares a lot of parts with an XJ) is NAXJA.org

Oh...if you are running a 10 bolt rear..get a C-clip eliminator kit ; ).

Hey Fast.....You've been playing in this sand box before! Show us some pictures of your build! Past or present we love to see the Jeeps and others!

My axles are from a heavy duty half ton Chevy, the rear is a twelve bolt. The steering box on mine will not be anywhere near the original position, it will be on a new mounting plate with a cross member to the other side. I have worked out it's geometry and clearances to make it work for off road use. I believe the stock HD Chevy steering stuff will be sufficient for my rig's big tires simply because it weighs in at about half what the truck weighed and it will never meet that truck's max GVWR in any form.

I have worked with my nephew with setting up his rock crawler using purely hydraulic steering running on propane in a Toyota 4 cylinder with a gear reduction box and a four link rear with gas/spring/shocks that are four feet long.

The problems I am facing is lack of time, very busy time in my shop, and a gimped up feeble old body that won't move like it used to.

Anyone need an exhaust for a 4.2L Jeep?

I have a complete Borla SS system with a catco catalytic converter & Flowmaster muffler from my old setup. $375 + shipping. The header alone is ~425 new. I think I still have the Borla muffler that I'll throw in too, if I can find it.

Well.... the local shop that was installing the skid plates for me couldn't get the transfer case skid plate to work.
They messed with if for 2 days and wanted to know if they could mod it... I had to pull the plug because as soon as they cut it... it would be mine regardless if it ever got mounted.
I'll be sending it back... BUMMER

That sucks Mark. Parts engineering goes that way sometimes.

I am having fun building my Jeep again. If I had an earlier start or perhaps a normal occupation I would be making it on time for this blessed event. As of this moment it looks like the Jeep will be staying home.

My son's truck just ripped up it's transfer case this morning. With his job's hours he won't have enough time to replace it in time to make the trip either.

So now I am into a major maintenance program on my Uly. I was postponing this stuff until I got back as long as I was trailering it up there. Now I have to shift programs.

I am bummed. The Jeep is looking so cool. Oh well. Nothing to be upset about, I am going to have a nice long weekend on the Uly and save a lot of fuel $!!

Don't be bummed Vern, We can take mine for a little putt if you want... hell, we can even break something so we can fix it and have a bonding moment if ya like.

To be honest with you, I am just looking forward to seeing everyone and kicking back next to the campfire.

Well yeah!

It has been fun even though the challenge has not been met. I have been tinkering on it today a bit. Might even get it fired up tonight!

Well be damned if it didn't fire right up today! Too long of a list of what it would take to make it roll out under it's own power for now though. Sure does sound sweet.

Had a difficult time getting the timing right. A rarity for me with a small block Chevy. Played around for about an hour set it back to where I know it was correct. When it fired I revved it up a bit right away, I hear a large pop, then it started running correctly. I walk around to the back of the Jeep. What do I see? About four pounds of mouse nest that blew out of the tail pipe right into my stand up tool box. If all of the nuts had not been eaten it could have easily been eight pounds of crap.

What ever the case may be it runs pretty well, time to move on to it's next project. I am still excited to get it done to drive it around my dirt trails with these 38's.

mark - nice pics, but just a refresher - when taking shots like that, your goal as the driver is a) get more mud on the jeep and b) cover the photographer with big ol' splashes as well.

THAT'S how you get really good shots!! : )

I'm going to Jeep Skool next weekend!!

It only costs $40 bucks for the driver and $5 for the passenger.... but something tells me it will end up costing me a bunch more!

Big Rock allows Jeeps on the trails now as well. Bit of a haul from Columbus, but it's a really nice place. Go via Lebanon and if you have a way to carry it, you can borrow my KDX-200 and play as well.

Perfect!

PM me when you want to go, and I'll make sure the bike is ready.

When you come by to pick it up, I'll park it in the yard, kick it over on the right side, pick it up, then kick it over on the left side... We gotta set the right tone for this sort of thing...

That method works well if he would just slip and fall on his ass as he gets out of the Jeep with his clean non-riding clothes on!

Joe, he could only have splashed this photog once when he would be asking "what did you do with my camera?".

My response(after getting back in the Jeep) would be something like....."what camera?"

Looks great, Wolfridgerider! maybe UCF sent you a skid for another year TJ? I think in '03+ they changed the transfer case skid mounting points and frame a little bit, which could be the culprit of the fitment issues.

I'm actually rebuilding my TJ over the fall/winter since my 33x10.5 ATs are almost bald and I want to move up to 35x12.5 MTs.

I have a build thread going on over at JeepForum.com.http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f22/pokeys-build-12 50503/

I just sourced a Ford 8.8 rear axle out of a '99 Explorer (31 spline shafts, LSD, disc brakes) this morning for $150, so that's exciting. I'm throwing an Artec truss on it, regear to 4.88, new driveshaft and blammo: beeeeeeef.

Going with a Savvy/Currie 4" progressive coil spring lift (replaces all control arms and trackbars with fully adjustable aluminum units, Johnny Joints all around). An Anti-Rock front sway bar and SYE should round out the mods. I think I'm going with Allied beadlocks wrapped with 35x12.5" Goodyear MT/R with Kevlars.

Josh that is a nice build up for your rig for sure! Nice twist going in that pic.

My Jeep project has to earn it's own keep, so until I get a contract for it to pay it's own bills my mods will come out of the steel rack and scrap pile.

Mark, you recall my dead camera batteries? For what ever reason I ended up with one video of about 12 seconds and the pictures that I have posted plus about three more of Ken. Perhaps your spare batteries were weak??? Or maybe I got some dirt on the contacts?

It works fine now with new lithiums. Here is a perspective picture for Gary. My blue Tahoe is a stock height four wheel drive.

3 3/4" off set, Stock is 5 1/2". That extra 1 3/4" should keep the tires from rubbing the frame.

I got a set of 5 for 300 bucks.... Wheels, Center caps and new lug nuts.

... remind me again how much a MC wheel costs : )
That's right... this hobby may just be cheaper than my Buell habit..... NOT

Mark you got to measure the swing also. As you turn the steering to it's lock left and right make sure the tire will not now reach the back of the front fender well. They can grab and bend the crap out of the front fenders. Stepping it out increases it's total arc.

Fixing one problem usually causes another. This is why we all end up doing a lift.

IF it does hit the fenders I would stay with the stock wheels because rubbing the frame is the lesser of two evils. As a driver you have to compensate for any shortcomings that your vehicle may have. Just don't turn it that far if you know it will hit. When you spend three years and countless dollars on these things, before you know it they all get fixed, and you have gone pro!

You got one of those Harbor Freight POS tire changers?

I did all of mine on it. Ya just have to use a lot of lube and be gentle.
